Chapter 3

The silver shawl was the first thing I saw when I walked onto the field.

It hung from Sienna's shoulders like it had been tailored for her, pale and shimmering against her black training leathers, fastened at the collarbone with the Ridgeback crest. Every Luna candidate wore one during public trials. It told visiting packs who would be standing beside the Alpha in five years.

I'd worn it for eleven months. I'd folded it into tissue paper every night.

"Morning, Lena," Sienna said as I passed the scoring table. She had a clipboard. Of course she had a clipboard.

"You're running the young wolves today?"

"Someone has to." She tapped the roster. "Ines asked me last night."

Ines hadn't asked me anything last night. She'd handed me a sheet of paper and sent me north.

Adrian came up behind her, coffee in one hand, and stopped short when he saw my face. He knew exactly what I was looking at.

"It's just a temporary arrangement," he said.

"Okay."

"I mean it. Somebody had to take the duties for the trial. It doesn't mean anything yet."

"Yet," I repeated.

He winced. Sienna didn't. She adjusted the shawl at her throat with two fingers, slow and absent, like she'd been doing it her whole life.

"Lena," Adrian started.

"I've got a station," I said, and walked away before he could finish.

The public test was the closing event of the first week. Ridgeback elders and Blackmoor officers sat on folding chairs along the north edge of the field, and forty-odd wolves took turns running scent courses while everyone judged. The younger ones went last, the eighteen- and nineteen-year-olds who'd only shifted a handful of times.

I was posted at the far marker, closest to their holding pen. My job was simple. Make sure nobody bolted.

The kid's name was Danny Merrick. I'd known him since he was nine and used to follow me around the tracking yard asking if he could carry my gear. He'd shifted for the first time last spring. He was lanky and gray and still all paws.

He did fine on the first two markers.

On the third, the wind turned.

It came down off the ridge straight across the Blackmoor officers' row, heavy and foreign, a dozen strange wolves and one Alpha whose scent didn't belong to Danny's world at all. I saw his ears pin flat. I saw his hackles go up in a ripple from neck to tail.

Then he started to snarl, low and wet, and the sound wasn't play anymore.

"Danny," I said. "Hey. Look at me."

He spun toward the officers' chairs. Somebody's chair scraped back.

I was already moving. I'd done this a hundred times. Get low, get between, push your wolf forward until theirs feels her and remembers who's in charge. It was the one thing I'd been better at than anyone in the Luna program, Sienna included.

I crouched in front of him and reached inside myself.

My wolf turned over. That was all. A sleepy shift, nowhere near enough.

Danny didn't feel her. He felt a human body in his way.

He hit me square in the chest and I went down hard on my back, the frozen dirt knocking the air out of me. His weight pinned my shoulders. Claws raked my forearm when I threw it up, and the pain arrived a second later, hot and bright. His teeth snapped an inch from my jaw.

"Danny, it's me. It's Lena."

Somebody was shouting. Somebody else yelled for a muzzle pole.

And then a knee hit the dirt beside my head.

Kael didn't bark an order. I'd been braced for it, that full-body flood of Alpha command that flattens every wolf in range. Adrian would have used it. Any Alpha would have used it.

Kael just crouched next to me, close enough that his shoulder pressed against mine, and breathed out.

Cedar. Cold rain. Then something under it, warm and steady, reaching toward me.

"Again," he said quietly. "Push. I've got the rest."

"She won't—"

"She will. Do it."

I closed my eyes and reached for her one more time.

This time she answered.

She rose up out of me like she'd been waiting for a reason, and when she met his scent in the air between us, the two didn't just sit side by side. They folded together. I felt it on my skin, in my teeth, a single heavy wave rolling outward from where we knelt.

Danny went still.

His snarl broke off mid-breath. His ears came up. He looked at me, then at Kael, then back at me, and then he sank down onto his belly in the dirt and pressed his muzzle against my good arm with a long, shaky whine.

Nobody on the field said a word.

I opened my eyes. Every wolf within fifty yards was watching us. Half the Blackmoor officers had their heads tipped the same way Kael's had been outside the Moon Hall. One of the Ridgeback elders had a hand pressed flat over her mouth.

Across the field, Adrian had stopped dead. His face had gone completely blank, the way it did when he was trying very hard not to react.

Then Sienna stumbled back from the scoring table, knocking her clipboard into the grass, one hand pressed to her chest.

Adrian turned.

He crossed the field to her. Not to me. To her. He took her by the elbows and bent his head and said something I couldn't hear, and I watched his hands run down her arms, checking, the shawl bunching under his fingers.

She hadn't been touched. She'd been twenty yards away.

My arm was bleeding into the dirt.

I'd seen this before. At the Moon Ceremony, under the skylight, he'd turned his back on me and let her step up to his shoulder. I'd told myself it was the ceremony, the pressure, the elders watching. That it had been one bad moment.

It wasn't a moment. It was the order he put us in.

Something in my chest went cold and clear, like water that finally stops moving.

Danny was led off by two handlers, still sleepy and stunned. I sat up slowly and looked at my arm. Four long scratches, the deepest one oozing steadily down to my wrist.

Kael came back carrying a red first-aid kit. He dropped to one knee in front of me and snapped the lid open without asking.

"Hold it up," he said.

I held it up.

He'd barely torn open the gauze when a shadow fell across us.

"I'll take care of her," Adrian said.

Kael didn't stand. He looked up, gauze in one hand, and his face didn't change at all.

"She's bleeding."

"I can see that." Adrian's voice had gone tight. "She's my mate."

The words hung there. A few wolves near the markers had stopped pretending not to listen.

A week ago, hearing him say that would have put me back together.

I looked at Adrian. At the strand of Sienna's dark hair still caught on his sleeve.

"Not anymore," I said.

His mouth opened. For a second he looked like I'd hit him.

I turned back to Kael and held my arm out a little farther.

Kael didn't look at Adrian again. He just pressed the antiseptic pad to the first scratch, and when I flinched, he steadied my wrist with his other hand. His fingers settled on the inside of it, right over the pulse, warm and rough.

My wolf surged.

Not a turn in her sleep. Not a lifted head. She threw herself against the inside of my ribs so hard I nearly pulled my arm back, pacing, restless, louder than she'd been in six months.

I stared at his fingers on my skin.

Kael's hand went still. He didn't look up.

But I watched his thumb press down, just slightly, over the exact spot where she was hammering, like he could feel her too.
