Regret's Late Arrival: When Apologies Come Too Late
Chapter 3
When I pushed the door open, Emma was already lost in Kellen's kisses, her clothes half undone.
"What are you two doing?"
Caught in the act, Emma was momentarily flustered, then quickly regained her composure and scolded me.
"Bernard, how dare you follow me?"
I trusted her too much in my previous life; otherwise, I would have noticed something was wrong long ago.
What kind of woman complains that her husband was too good in bed?
Only Emma used that as an excuse to avoid my advances.
At this moment, with her chest exposed, Kellen adjusted his pants, his face dark and unapologetic.
It seemed I had timed it perfectly, just in time to make them uncomfortable. I secretly relished the moment.
"If I hadn't come, I wouldn't have known that my wife moonlights as a caregiver after work, and this patient seems to need some very special care."
My merciless words left Kellen's ward mate staring in shock.
"Damn, brother, you, and them..."
He touched the top of his head, then looked at mine, silently shedding a tear for me.
"Bernard! Kellen and I are just friends. What's wrong with helping a friend in need?"
"Nothing, it's your business how you help, but don't bring my food into it!"
I tossed the thermos directly into the trash can and coldly said to Emma.
"See you at the Civil Affairs Bureau tomorrow!"
"Bernard! You're a doctor, can't you have some compassion? Kellen is a patient. Ever since he was diagnosed with bone cancer, everyone who could have helped has abandoned him. I'm just helping out of humanitarian concern. Is that worth a divorce?"
She thought taking care of another man, wiping him clean, and using her body to comfort him was a small matter?
If I had known she was so deeply in love with Kellen, I would never have married her!
She had no guilt for deceiving me; I was just a cover for her secret affair with Kellen.
For seven years, I tried to melt her cold heart, playing the role of a perfect husband, even up to the moment of my death in the previous life, foolishly thinking I had finally warmed her up.
Little did I know, she only wanted to give her unborn child a nominal father!
When she and Kellen plotted my accidental death, they were genuinely ruthless.
Even a dog would become loyal after being cared for for seven years.
"Then he should reflect on why, in his time of need, all his relatives and friends deserted him. Maybe the problem lies with him!"
If only Emma had opened her eyes, she would have seen the truth!
But unfortunately, she was blind in both eyes and heart.
"Emma, what did I do wrong to make him misunderstand us so much? They say a long illness brings no filial piety; is it really my fault that I was abandoned? I... I might as well be dead!"
Kellen put on an act, tears stubbornly welling up in his eyes. He even made a move to get out of bed and rush toward the window.
I felt a wave of nausea watching this. I had seen Emma's behavior many times, but this was the first time I encountered a male manipulator.
They were practically in the middle of an affair and still blamed me for misunderstanding them!
I, having died once, knew all too well why everyone had abandoned Kellen!
Emma quickly grabbed Kellen, tears streaming down her face, and hugged him tightly from behind.
"He's cruel at heart and sharp with his words. Don't bother with him. When I get back, I'll take care of him properly! The doctor said you can't get upset. If anything happens to you, I'll be heartbroken."
The two of them hugged each other like no one else was around, truly a pair of star-crossed lovers.
If I didn't help them out, it would be unreasonable!
I took out my phone, snapped a few more pictures, and sent them along with the earlier ones of them kissing to her family group chat, tagging her.
"True love is hard to find. Let's get divorced tomorrow, so you two can focus on making babies."
I wanted to see how Emma would handle this!
Within two minutes of sending the photos, both of our phones were bombarded with calls.
