Chapter 2

I could barely register what was happening as the ship's crew pulled me from the water, my mechanical heart struggling to maintain its rhythm. Blood soaked through my dress, and the world tilted sickeningly around me. Axl was already on deck, cradling Aliya in his arms, wrapping her in warm blankets while I shivered uncontrollably, my lips blue from the Mediterranean waters that had turned treacherously cold after sunset.

"She tried to kill me!" Aliya's voice cut through the chaos, her perfectly manicured finger pointing directly at me. "She found out about us and went crazy! She pushed me overboard!"

The accusation hung in the air as the ship's crew and gathering passengers turned to stare at me. I tried to speak, to defend myself, but only managed a wet, choking sound as more blood bubbled from my lips.

"Is this true?" Axl's voice was cold, distant, as he looked at me—not with concern for my obvious medical distress, but with suspicion, with judgment.

"N-no," I finally gasped, clutching at my chest where the mechanical heart was malfunctioning. "She jumped... you saw... she jumped..."

"I was trying to get away from her!" Aliya sobbed, burying her face in Axl's chest. "She cornered me on the balcony, screaming about how she knew everything. She was like a monster, Axl. She said if she couldn't have you, no one would."

The performance was masterful—her trembling voice, the strategic tears that never quite ruined her makeup. I watched in disbelief as Axl's arms tightened around her, his expression hardening as he looked at me.

"Katherine, how could you?" he whispered, the betrayal in his voice so convincing that for a moment, I almost questioned my own reality.

"The necklace," Aliya suddenly gasped, her hand flying to her bare throat. "It's gone. Princeton's necklace—the last thing he ever gave me. It must have fallen off when she pushed me!"

Her wail of despair echoed across the deck, and I saw several women dabbing at their eyes in sympathy. The ship's doctor had arrived and was attempting to examine me, but Axl suddenly stood, his shadow falling over me.

"You're going back in," he said, his voice deadly quiet.

"What?" The doctor looked up in shock. "Sir, your wife needs immediate medical attention. Her mechanical heart is—"

"She's going back in the water to find that necklace," Axl insisted, cutting him off. "It's the least she can do after what she's done."

"Axl, please," I begged, reaching for him. "I didn't push her. I'm bleeding internally. The heart—"

"The heart I needed because you insisted on being the donor?" he sneered, and I flinched as if he'd struck me. "The heart that ended your career and made you such a burden? Is that the heart you're worried about?"

The gathered crowd murmured, some in shock, others in morbid fascination. I saw the judgment in their eyes, the way they looked at me—the jealous, unstable wife who'd attacked her husband's innocent sister-in-law.

"Find the necklace, Katherine," Axl demanded. "Prove you're sorry."

Before I could protest further, he nodded to two of the ship's crew, who reluctantly helped me to my feet and guided me to the edge of the deck. The dark water below looked endless, freezing, deadly.

"Axl," I whispered, one last plea as my blood dripped onto the polished deck. "Our baby..."

His expression flickered for just a moment—confusion, then dismissal. He didn't believe me. Or worse, he didn't care.

With a gentle but firm push from one of the crewmen, I was back in the water, the shock of cold stealing my breath. The mechanical heart stuttered dangerously in my chest as I forced myself to dive deeper, searching for a necklace I knew didn't exist.

The pain came suddenly, sharp and tearing through my lower abdomen. I curled around myself underwater, bubbles escaping from my mouth as I screamed silently. Something was terribly wrong. I hadn't even known I was pregnant until this moment—until I felt the life inside me slipping away in the freezing Mediterranean waters.

Above me, I could see Axl's silhouette against the ship's lights, watching impassively as I bled out our child into the dark sea, still searching for Aliya's fictional necklace.
