Chapter 3

Daniel walked through the front door at six o'clock, carrying a box of bakery cupcakes like a peace offering.

Owen and Maya were sitting at the kitchen island, their homework spread across the scratched laminate counter. Daniel set the bakery box down, ruffled Owen's hair, and leaned down to kiss the top of Maya's head. He looked relaxed, having shed his suit jacket in the car, his sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms.

"Hey, guys," Daniel said, his voice warm and easy. He glanced at me over the counter, flashing a practiced, forgiving smile meant to signal that all was forgotten. "I know things were a little tense this morning. Mom just had a stressful day and needed some space to clear her head. Everything is fine."

I set my glass of water down on the counter. The sound was flat and sharp.

"Maya, Owen," I said, keeping my voice quiet and steady. "Put your pencils down for a second and look at me."

Both kids looked up from their math worksheets.

"Your dad is wrong," I said. "Everything is not fine. Your father and I are separating."

Daniel’s smile vanished instantly. His posture stiffened, the warmth draining out of his face so fast it looked comical. "Erin, stop it. Don't do this in front of the kids."

"Maya, take your brother upstairs to your room," I told them gently. "Pick out a game to play. I'll call you down when dinner is ready."

Maya looked between us, her wide eyes darting to the unopened cupcake box, then took Owen by the wrist. Owen scrambled down from his stool without a word. Their footsteps pattered up the stairs, followed by the quiet click of Maya's bedroom door.

The moment the hallway went silent, Daniel stepped around the island, his hands raised in exasperation.

"Are you completely out of your mind?" he hissed, keeping his voice low. "You're dropping marital drama on an eight-year-old and a six-year-old because of a business disagreement? I told you I'd handle the bank on Monday. You don't blow up our family over a cash-flow crunch."

"It's not a disagreement, Daniel," I said.

I reached into the folder sitting beside my laptop and pulled out a four-page legal notice, sliding it across the counter until it tapped his knuckles.

"That's a formal notice of asset preservation filed with my divorce petition by Miller & Croft Family Law," I said. "As of two o'clock this afternoon, the court has entered an emergency financial restraining order over our joint marital estate. You are legally barred from transferring any more funds out of the 529 accounts, taking on additional debt in my name, or encumbering any shared property."

Daniel stared at the bold header on the first page. He flipped through the sheets, his fingers trembling slightly as he read the stamped county clerk seal.

"You went to a lawyer today?" he asked, his voice cracking with disbelief. "You actually spent money on a retainer while HavenLoop is in the middle of a funding round?"

"I spent my own money," I said. "And tomorrow morning, the real estate agent is coming to prepare this house for sale."

That stopped him cold.

Daniel’s head snapped up. The arrogant, dismissive mask he had worn for the past two years cracked completely. A genuine spike of fear crossed his eyes.

"You can't sell this house," he said, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "You know damn well you can't."

"Why not?" I asked. "Our equity is the only liquid asset left after you drained our savings. We'll split the proceeds after paying off the primary mortgage and whatever portion of your business line the title company requires at closing."

"Because HavenLoop's bridge financing is tied to my personal balance sheet!" he snapped, slamming his open palm on the counter. "The syndicate investors ran a net-worth check on me. If this house goes under contract without the bank's consent, the bank can trigger the default acceleration clause on the bridge line. My credit tanks, the seed syndicate pulls their term sheet, and eighteen months of work goes down the drain. You’d destroy my company just to spite me."

"Your company was built on stolen money from our children," I replied, holding his gaze without blinking. "I don't care about your seed round, Daniel."

Daniel let out a harsh, bitter laugh. He shook his head, running both hands through his hair as he backed away toward the living room.

"You're bluffing," he said, his tone shifting into the mocking, condescending cadence he used whenever I questioned our budget. "You won't sell this place. You love this house too much."

I looked at him silently.

"You spent six years obsessing over this property, Erin," he continued, gesturing around the room with an ugly smirk. "You spent three months tracking down those reclaimed floor tiles in the entryway. You drew the blueprints for the back patio by hand. You've got five folders of kitchen renovation plans on your computer right now. You're never going to walk away from this place."

He stepped back toward the island, leaning over the counter to look down at me.

"Where will you even go?" he asked softly, weaponizing every ounce of cruelty he possessed. "You haven't worked a regular job since Maya was born. You have no career, no current income, and no rental history. This house is literally everything you have. You need me to pay the mortgage, and you know it."

I looked at the man I had spent over a decade supporting, washing his clothes, managing his schedule, and making excuses for his endless neglect.

I picked up my phone from the desk, unlocked the screen, and tapped a contact name under my favorites. I pressed speakerphone and set the device flat between us.

The line rang twice before a crisp, professional voice answered.

"Nathan Brooks, Calloway Design and Build."

Daniel frowned, glancing at the glowing screen.

"Nathan, it's Erin Walsh," I said clearly.

The line paused, and Nathan's tone instantly shifted from brisk corporate formality to warm familiarity. "Erin! It's great to hear from you. Arthur and I were just talking about you last week. How are the kids?"

"They're good, Nathan," I said. "I'm calling about my shareholder account. I need to reactivate my quarterly distribution schedule starting this quarter."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed in confusion.

"Of course," Nathan replied smoothly without missing a beat. "We kept your shareholder distributions in the reserve account just like you asked when you took your family hiatus. Your thirty percent ownership stake has accrued roughly ninety-six thousand dollars in declared distributions over the last two fiscal quarters. I can have a direct deposit processed to your personal checking account by Thursday."

Daniel froze. The color visibly drained from his face.

"That works," I said. "I'm also ready to step back onto active residential consulting. Pull the project files for the new custom builds in Westlake. I'll take lead on the structural interior packages starting next month."

"Consider it done," Nathan said. "The team will be thrilled to have you back on-site. I'll send the updated distribution ledger and project briefs to your private email tonight."

"Thanks, Nathan. Talk soon."

I tapped the red button, ending the call.

The kitchen was dead silent. The faint hum of the refrigerator filled the space between us.

Daniel stood completely motionless, staring at my phone as if it had just exploded.

"Thirty percent?" he choked out, his voice barely audible. "Calloway Design? The commercial firm on Fourth Street?"

"My grandfather founded Calloway, Daniel," I said evenly. "When he passed away, his shares transferred directly to me. I'm a partner and a licensed professional engineer."

"You... you make nearly two hundred thousand a year just on equity distributions?" He looked at me as if he were seeing a ghost, his gaze darting over my face as if he were recalculating eleven years of marriage. "Why the hell didn't you tell me that? Why did you let us struggle? Why didn't you put that money into HavenLoop?"

"Because when we got married, you insisted you wanted to be the provider," I said. "You told me you didn't want any handout from my family's legacy. So I left my distributions in the firm's shareholder reserve account to grow for my retirement. And after watching you blow through every dollar we ever touched, I thank God every day I never let you near my portfolio."

"Erin—"

"You never asked about my work, Daniel," I cut him off, picking up a black ink pen from the counter. "You never asked about my designs, you never asked about my shares, and you never asked what I was capable of. You were too busy explaining money to me."

I pulled the proposed real estate listing agreement toward me, flipped to the final page, and signed my name on the seller line with a single, firm stroke.

The ink dried instantly on the crisp paper. Six years of dreams, of waiting for a man who never intended to share his future, ended with that signature.

My phone buzzed against the laminate.

I picked it up and looked at the screen. It was a text from the lead listing agent.

*Your signed seller paperwork is received, Erin. I've already lined up a private preview. A developer who specializes in custom structural transformations will be at the property tomorrow at ten a.m. to evaluate the structure.*

I closed the file, picked up my phone, and looked straight into Daniel's pale, ruined face.

"Be out of the master bedroom by nine," I said.
