Chapter 2

LYRA

I remember the pain, hot and searing. I remember finding it hard to breathe. I remember breathing my last as darkness enveloped me.

What I don’t remember is how I got saved.

I opened my eyes and sat up in bed. Breathing hard, I looked around and found myself back in my Luna mansion.

How did I get here?

The last time I checked, Ragnulf had thrown me into prison before executing me. Right?

I got up from the bed, and stared at myself in the mirror. Then I saw a scar running over my left breast. Touching it, I got flashes of how I was murdered.

What happened? How am I still here? Did someone save me?

The door opened and I jerked in fright - my heart hammering fast thinking it was Ragnulf’s men coming for me like they did last time.

Instead, it was my personal maid, named Thea. She carried a tray of food and drinks and carefully placed it on the table next to my bed.

“Happy Birthday, my lady.” She bowed her head. “Just a gentle reminder that the Alpha hosted a birthday for you at the Lunar Hall. What dress would you like to wear?”

I stared at her like she was stupid. “My birthday was months ago, Thea.”

Her brows furrowed as her eyes moved with uncertainty. “My Luna, I am pretty sure it's today.”

I stared at her warily. How can something I have attended months ago happen today? Then it dawned on me that Thea was dressed exactly as she was dressed that day.

If I should guess right, she made pork chops and chicken noodles for me. Checking to see if I was right, I went to the plate of food and opened the covers.

To my surprise, I was right.

This wasn't a usual meal I ate but that morning, my mate had sourced it specially for me to make me happy.

“There hasn't been pork in the pack for weeks. Where did you get this?” I asked her.

“My Luna, Alpha Ragnulf secured it for you from a neighboring pack. He knows how much you like pork and wants you to be happy.”

I blinked in shock. Is this Deja Vu or something? Am I dreaming?

I shook my head. If it was all a dream, then I wouldn't have this scar over my chest. Right?

So was this a second chance? Did the Moon Goddess hear me?

“My Luna, are you okay?”

I blinked, and formed a smile. “Yes, I am. Get me the midnight sparkly gown I chose yesterday.”

Thea bowed and left the room.

I began to wonder as I stared in the mirror. If I went back in time, then that meant the Goddess wanted me to have a second chance. I stared at the scar again, remembering the dagger sinking in, Jeanette’s smirk and Ragnulf’s indifference.

Whatever this is, I will not waste it. I will not let Jeanette win this time.

The time for the party arrived and I was dressed to the nines in a stunning glittering black dress. All day I hadn’t seen Ragnulf because he was in between pack meetings. So tonight, I was seeing him for the first time since I woke up.

My heart hammered when I walked in the hall and there he was, watching me with awe and admiration instead of hate and disdain. He was dressed just like last time so this further proves the fact that I went back in the past. Still, my heart hammered as I approached him, knowing fully well he was responsible for my death.

“Happy birthday, my love.” He said and as I approached him, he tried to hold my face to kiss me and I flinched in fear.

His brows furrowed in confusion. “Are you alright, my love?”

I forced a smile for him and nodded. “Yeah. Just jittery.”

He smiled. “You don’t need to be nervous, my love. This party is all for you.”

I reinforced my fake smile for him as I faced the crowd. He was right. This party was for me to be distracted so he could sneak into Jeanette’s room.

About an hour later, a gift was presented to me by Ragnulf himself and before he opened it, I already knew what it would be.

It was a rare blue moonstone pendant that made everybody gasp and gush.

I turned around and packed my hair up so he could slide the necklace around my neck. As he did so, I remembered how he had dragged it from my neck when he arrested me for pushing Jeanette.

“You don’t deserve something this grand.” He had said back then before giving it to Jeanette to wear.

After wearing it and turning to show everyone, Ragnulf tried again to kiss me. This time, I let him while curling my hands into fists as I stiffened and let his lips taste mine.

In order for me to win, I have to play along.

Afterward, the party went on, celebrating me while others stacked up gifts in a mountain for me. On this day months ago, I was so preoccupied receiving gifts that I had no idea that Ragnulf had snuck off.

This time, I kept him in my peripheral vision and the moment he slipped away, I put my personal maid in charge of gifts and I followed after him.

He went outside the hall towards his horse carriage and just as he was about to get in, I called out.

“Leaving so soon?”

He paused and turned to me, his eyes wide in surprise. “Oh Darling.” He chuckled nervously. “Just wanted to see someone real quick.”

“Someone?” I raised a brow, “who could be more important than your mate on her birthday, Ragnulf? Who?”
