Chapter 5

I was back to our neighborhood.

My neighbor, Trish, was digging the soil in her lawn, wiping away her tears.

I glanced over and saw Fluffy lying there motionless with a bulging belly.

There were dark red blood stains on her body.

I remembered her holding Fluffy the big white cat, before my surgery.

She would smooth Fluffy's fur, who was pregnant and about to give birth, and said happily that she was going to be a grandmother.

But now....

I pulled out a tissue and handed it to her.

Trish couldn't stop crying.

"Fluffy didn't come home last night."

"I got up in the morning, looked around, and saw her on the side of the road..."

She was digging at the soil with great effort, so I squatted down to help.

Fluffy was very close to me, always rubbing against me when I was near.

In my previous life, everyone avoided me, but she wasn't afraid of me.

When I thought of that, tears started to flow.

I had a kind person's heart in my chest.

But still, I wanted to kill the driver.

Then I remembered that Fluffy would always look out for cars before crossing the street.

Trish scattered on the last handful of soil and patted it down to make it firm.

"Rest in peace, little one. Mom will miss you."

There was hatred in her eyes.

"I heard that a car was crashing all over the place yesterday, hitting several stalls."

"I wonder if it's the one. I'm checking the surveillance camera now, see who it was."

I came back home.

Sue was fiddling with her cell phone. When she saw me, she grinned and put the phone down.

"Kate, look at this silly cat."

In the video, Sue's car was parked in the same place.

She knocked on the car window and called Fluffy's name.

Then she threw down a sausage.

Just as Fluffy lowered her head to sniff at it, she stepped on the accelerator...

I grabbed her collar, ready to kill her then and there.

"You loved Fluffy, why did you do this?"

She pulled a switchblade from her pocket and slashed it across my wrist.

I felt the pain as blood dripped onto the floor.

She played with the switchblade, not caring.

"The damn cat always ignored me whenever she saw you."

"She finally paid me some attention. But too late, I didn't want to see her again."

The darkness on her face gave me chills.

My dad was back from work.

When he saw the blood on my hand, he quickly pulled me aside and bandaged the cut.

"What happened?"

My stepmother came out of her room. She looked at Sue's face and took the knife cautiously.

She asked me if I needed to go to the hospital, acting like she cared.

I ignored her and looked up.

"Dad, Sue ran her car into a pregnant cat!"

"She's a monster, I want to move out!"

July disagreed with what I said.

"It's just a cat, not a person."

"You just had surgery, there's no one to take care of you if you move out. I'll ask Sue to apologize. Don't cause more trouble for your father."

Sue ignored her, snorted coldly and went back to her room.

July didn't want to pay for my new place, nor did she want to give me living expenses.

My father paid all the money, and the hearts were available by chance.

Hadn't it been for that, I might not have had a transplant of my own.

But the money was in her hands, and my dad couldn't do anything.

He rubbed my head, looking all helpless.

"July's right. Why don't you..."

Before he could finish his words, there came a string of knocks on the door.
