Chapter 3

The blinding high beams pinned us against the wrought-iron gates.

Three armor-plated SUVs swerved onto the wet asphalt, their massive tires throwing a wave of dirty rainwater across the curb. They boxed us in, forming a barricade of matte-black steel between the estate and the main road.

Leo buried his face in my knee, his small fingers digging into my soaked trousers.

"Don't look, baby," I instructed, shielding his eyes with my free hand.

My heart hammered against my ribs. Carter had called his military police. He actually called them to drag me back inside and confiscate the divorce papers.

The driver's side door of the lead vehicle swung open. A heavy combat boot slammed onto the pavement.

A man stepped out, unfolding a massive black umbrella.

It wasn't a military police officer.

The gold stars gleaming on his collar caught the dim streetlights. Four stars.

General Julian Thorne, chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

I recognized him instantly from the endless military banquets Carter used to force me to study. The most feared commander in the hierarchy. A phantom who dictated national security from the shadows.

He strode directly toward me, ignoring the puddles splashing against his polished boots.

"General Thorne," I greeted, keeping my voice level despite the freezing rain biting my skin.

He stopped two feet away. Up close, his eyes were a piercing, icy gray, scanning my soaked clothes and the shivering toddler clinging to my leg.

"You are standing in the rain, Serena," Julian stated.

"I just finalized my divorce," I replied, lifting my chin. "The weather seemed fitting."

A short, startling laugh escaped him. It was a harsh sound, entirely out of place for a man known to execute traitors without a flinch.

He shifted the umbrella, completely covering Leo and me, leaving his own broad shoulders exposed to the downpour.

"Take this," Julian ordered.

He unbuttoned his thick wool military overcoat and slipped it off. Before I could protest, he draped the heavy fabric over my shoulders. The residual heat from his body seeped through my wet blouse, instantly warming me.

"I don't need your charity, General," I said, trying to shrug the coat off.

Julian caught my wrist. His grip was firm but careful.

"It is not charity," he said, his voice dropping to a low, commanding register. "I have been waiting for this day."

I stared at him, searching his stoic face for a punchline. "Waiting for my marriage to implode?"

"Waiting for you to open your eyes." Julian released my wrist and looked past me, his gaze fixing on the estate behind the gates.

I followed his line of sight.

On the second floor, the master bedroom window glowed yellow against the dark sky. Carter stood behind the glass.

Even from this distance, I saw my ex-husband's posture rigid with shock. His hands were pressed flat against the windowpane. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving him looking like a terrified ghost.

Carter recognized the four-star convoy. He recognized the man wrapping a coat around his discarded wife.

"He looks pale," Julian observed, a cruel smirk playing on his lips.

"He thinks you're here to court-martial him," I said.

"I might," Julian replied smoothly. "Abandoning a wife and child is unbecoming of a Major. Especially one who bought his rank with his wife's fortune."

I stiffened. "You know about that."

"I know everything that happens in my command, Serena."

"Then you know I took a five-million-dollar settlement to walk away today."

"You undercharged him," Julian said. He crouched down, bringing himself to eye level with Leo.

Leo peeked out from behind my leg, clutching his stuffed T-Rex.

"Hello, Leo," Julian said, his tone softening surprisingly. "Do you like riding in big trucks?"

Leo nodded slowly, his eyes wide.

Julian stood back up and signaled to the lead SUV. "My driver will take you wherever you need to go. You are done walking in the rain."

"Why are you doing this?" I demanded. "We have never spoken before tonight."

"Because you survived," Julian answered.

The words struck a nerve, sending a sharp jolt through my chest. He spoke as if he knew about the fiery car crash from my past life. The gasoline. The twisted metal. But that was impossible.

"I survived a bad marriage," I corrected, masking my unease. "Nothing more."

"If you say so." Julian gestured toward the open door of the SUV. "Get in."

"I have my own money now. I can call a cab."

Julian stepped closer, invading my personal space. The scent of pine and rain surrounded him.

"A cab will not protect you from Chloe," he said quietly.

My blood ran cold. "What do you know about my step-sister?"

"Enough to know she did not spend the last six months held hostage by enemy combatants."

Julian snapped his fingers.

The driver hurried over, holding a thick, classified red folder. He handed it to Julian and immediately retreated to the vehicle.

"Carter told the press Chloe was kidnapped," I said, eyeing the bright red cover. "He said she was tortured. That's why he had to hide her and the baby."

"Carter is a fool who thinks with his zipper," Julian countered.

He pressed the red folder against my chest. I grabbed it, my fingers gripping the stiff cardboard.

"Consider this a welcome gift to your new life," Julian said.

"What is it?"

"Open it."

I balanced the heavy wool coat on my shoulders and flipped the folder open.

A stack of glossy surveillance photographs sat inside.

I pulled the top photo out. It showed a crowded, neon-lit room. An underground club. In the center of the frame, wearing a tight sequined dress and holding a crystal champagne flute, was Chloe.

She was laughing, her head thrown back, surrounded by men in expensive suits.

I checked the bottom right corner of the photograph.

The bright yellow timestamp glowed against the dark background. It was dated exactly three months ago. The exact night Carter claimed he had to abandon my charity gala to negotiate her release from a hostile bunker.

"She was partying," I whispered, the sheer audacity of the lie settling heavily in my stomach.

"Every weekend," Julian confirmed. "While your husband funneled military resources to cover her bar tabs."

I flipped to the next photograph. Chloe sitting on a velvet VIP couch, counting a stack of hundred-dollar bills.

I flipped again. Chloe kissing a man who was definitely not Carter, her hands tangled in his hair.

"Keep them," Julian instructed. "Use them. Destroy her."

I closed the folder, a dangerous new energy pulsing through my veins.

Julian opened the rear door of the SUV.

"After you, Serena."

I gripped Leo's hand and stepped up into the armored vehicle, pulling the red folder tightly against my chest.

Julian climbed in beside me, pulling the heavy door shut and cutting off the sound of the howling wind.

The engine roared to life, vibrating through the leather seats.

"Where to?" Julian asked, buckling his seatbelt.

"Downtown," I said, my eyes fixed on the red folder in my lap. "I have a press conference to plan."

Julian smiled, a genuine, dangerous curve of his lips.

"Drive," he ordered the man behind the wheel.

The convoy accelerated, leaving the estate and my former life in the rearview mirror.

I ran my thumb over the edge of the cardboard file.

For the first time since my rebirth, the weapon in my hands felt heavier than fear.
