Chapter 1

Before getting married, my mother-in-law, Elena Murphy, treated me like a princess, as if I were her daughter.

I once thought I had found the right person.

Under their sweet talk, I didn't ask for a dowry and even fully paid for the house.

After the wedding, Elena revealed her true nature.

She even forced some homemade remedy down my throat while I was pregnant, just to ensure I had a son.

Because of that, I bled out and died in agony.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back to the day when both families met.

...

Looking at the overly eager woman in front of me, I realized I had been reborn.

I saw my mom's face turn pale, and a whirlwind of emotions stirred within me.

In my past life, when my boyfriend, Isaac Roberts, first brought me home, Elena had cooked an entire feast for me and even gave me a gold family heirloom ring.

That ring became my wedding band. Even though it wasn't worth as much as a diamond, I treasured it.

I truly believed Elena liked me and valued me.

Despite my boyfriend's family being in financial trouble, I still chose to marry him without hesitation.

My mom always asked, "What are you getting out of this?"

"I love him for his abilities and talents, and for the way his mom treats me like her own daughter."

Although the lack of a dowry upset my parents, they compromised for my sake.

Isaac didn't disappoint me, either. He used the resources my dad and I provided to start his own company. Within a few years, he became the CEO of a publicly traded company.

I never doubted Isaac's love for me, but he always did whatever his mom said.

He'd only say one thing, "My mom raised me all by herself. It wasn't easy. As her son, what's wrong with me going along with her wishes?"

I always thought he was being filial, but the truth was, he was just a complete mama's boy.

If Isaac had only listened to his mom, that would've been tolerable, but there were other things that severely affected my life.

Ever since Isaac and I moved into his family's home after the wedding, Elena's attitude changed drastically.

On the wedding day, Elena lay on our marital bed in her nightgown, insisting she sleep with us.

"I raised my son by myself, and now he's not just mine anymore. Am I really being unreasonable?"

Honestly, at the time, I was convinced by what she said. I thought she had a point.

I truly felt like I was stealing her son from her, so I agreed to this ridiculous request.

I thought I just had to endure it for one night, and she would still be the good mother-in-law I believed her to be.

As time went on, I realized that after every bath, Elena would come out wrapped in a towel. Sometimes, she'd even ask Isaac to bring her a towel halfway through her bath.

I mentioned this to Isaac more than once, but every time he'd say, "She's my mom. Can you not have such dirty thoughts?"

For years, I lived in constant emotional manipulation between Isaac and Elena.

At home, the thing Elena said most often was, "Isaac isn't just mine anymore."

Her favorite thing to say to others was, "Ellie didn't ask for a dowry and even bought a house for my son. This is the kind of wife you should marry. It'll save you money."

Before the wedding, I was treated well at Isaac's home and didn't have to lift a finger. After the wedding, I did all the chores and cooking.

Elena even made me rush home during lunch breaks to cook a full meal with four dishes for her.

Elena's drastic change shocked me, and I realized I had been deceived.

Before the wedding, she treated me well just to save on the dowry. Afterward, she ended up with a free maid.

Because of this, Isaac and I argued often. I loved him, so I chose to silently endure it.

Isaac and I had been married for years without getting pregnant, and Elena always said that I couldn't give birth to a baby.

Every day, she forced all kinds of home remedies down my throat.

I dreaded going home because there was always a bowl of bitter medicine waiting for me.

Three times a day.

When I couldn't take it anymore, I finally got pregnant.

I had a few months of peace. I didn't have to do anything and could sleep in every day.

I managed to get along with Elena for a few months, but everything changed when she caught me sneaking spicy snacks.

There were a few days when I craved spicy snacks. I only ate a little each time, worried it would harm the baby.

But all Elena cared about was the word "spicy."

She said, "If you crave spicy food, you're definitely having a girl."

No matter how much I tried to explain, she didn't believe me. A few days later, she placed a bowl of dark liquid in front of me.

"Drink it. Your womb is failing me by carrying a girl. Drink this, and I'll finally get my grandson."

I resisted, but she became furious and had Isaac hold me down.

Isaac obeyed.

"Go ahead and defy my mom. It's just medicine. What's so great about having a girl anyway?"

He had previously told me he wanted a daughter.

I watched helplessly as the medicine was poured into my mouth. I tried to spit it out, but I couldn't.

My stomach started hurting unbearably, and I begged them to take me to the hospital to save my baby.

"Stop being so dramatic! Just bear with it. Think about my grandson. I don't want him going to the hospital before he's even born."

I could only watch as blood flowed out of me, dying painfully.

The intense pain was etched deep inside me. Now that I had a second chance to face Isaac and his mother…

I would never fall for their tricks again. What I lost, I would make Isaac and Elena pay back.
