Chapter 1

The silver chains burned through my flesh like liquid fire, each link searing deeper than the last. The metallic scent of my own blood mixed with the crisp winter air as I struggled against the trap, my wolf whimpering in agony.

"Please," I whispered, my voice barely audible above the howling wind. "Lucien, please."

But the man I'd loved with every fiber of my being stood just beyond the silver's reach, his face illuminated by the crimson glow of the Blood Moon. That gentle smile I'd cherished for years now looked grotesque in the moonlight, twisted with something cold and calculating.

"I'm sorry, Aria," he said, his voice carrying that same tender tone he'd used when he whispered sweet promises in my ear. "But you were never meant for this."

The chains tightened as I tried to shift, my wolf form trapped between human and beast, silver preventing the full transformation that might have given me strength. My legs gave out, and I collapsed to my knees in the snow, the white crystals immediately staining red beneath me.

"Lucien, I don't understand." Tears froze on my cheeks as I looked up at him, searching his face for any trace of the mate I'd trusted with my life. "We're supposed to be together. The Moon Goddess chose us."

He laughed then, a sound devoid of warmth that made my blood run colder than the silver burning through my veins. "The Moon Goddess made a mistake. You're too weak, too soft. A Luna needs strength, not sentiment."

Footsteps crunched in the snow behind him, and my heart shattered completely as my younger sister emerged from the shadows. Selena's face was serene, almost peaceful, as she approached the silver trap.

"Sister," she said, her voice carrying a sweetness that now sounded poisonous to my ears. "I tried to warn you, didn't I? I told you that kindness was a weakness."

"Selena?" My voice cracked. "You're my sister. You're supposed to protect me."

She knelt just outside the silver's reach, close enough that I could see my own features reflected in her face—but where mine were soft with love and trust, hers were sharp with ambition and envy.

"You shouldn't be Luna," she whispered, her words cutting deeper than any blade. "That's my place. It was always meant to be mine."

The realization hit me like a physical blow. This wasn't a sudden betrayal—this was planned, orchestrated. The two people I'd loved most in the world had conspired against me, had watched me smile and laugh and plan our future while knowing they intended to steal it all away.

"How long?" I gasped, silver chains cutting into my wrists as I tried to reach for her. "How long have you been planning this?"

Lucien pulled a silver blade from his coat, its surface gleaming with deadly promise under the Blood Moon. "Long enough to know you'd never see it coming. You always were too trusting, too naive."

"The pack will know," I said desperately, my wolf's instincts finally kicking in as survival overrode heartbreak. "They'll smell your scent here. They'll know what you've done."

"Will they?" Selena's smile was razor-sharp. "Poor Aria, wandering off alone during the Blood Moon. Such a tragedy when the silver chains the hunters left behind caught our beloved future Luna. If only someone had been there to save her."

Lucien stepped closer, the blade catching the moonlight. "Don't worry. I'll comfort your grieving sister. We'll lead the pack together, stronger than you ever could have made us."

The silver was spreading through my system now, making my vision blur and my limbs heavy. But even through the haze of pain, I could see the truth written in their faces—the hunger for power, the satisfaction of a plan perfectly executed, the complete absence of remorse.

"You feel nothing," I whispered, the words barely audible. "Nothing at all."

Lucien raised the blade, and for a moment, something flickered across his features—not regret, but perhaps the faintest shadow of what we'd once shared. "I feel what I need to feel. Nothing more."

The silver blade pierced my chest, sliding between my ribs with surgical precision. The cold was immediate and absolute, spreading outward from the wound like ice through my veins. My wolf's howl died in my throat as darkness began to creep in from the edges of my vision.

Selena leaned closer, her breath warm against my ear as my life ebbed away. "Thank you, sister. For giving me everything I ever wanted."

I tried to speak, to curse them, to fight, but the silver had stolen my voice along with my strength. All I could do was watch as Lucien withdrew the blade, my blood dripping from its edge onto the pristine snow.

The last thing I saw was their faces—Lucien's cold satisfaction and Selena's triumphant smile—before the Blood Moon's crimson light faded to black.

But death, I discovered, was not the end.

Consciousness returned like a lightning strike, violent and sudden. I gasped, my hand flying to my chest where the blade had pierced my heart, finding only smooth, unmarked skin beneath my nightgown.

I was in my bedroom—my old bedroom—the familiar scent of lavender and pine surrounding me. Moonlight streamed through the window, but it was silver-white, not the ominous red of my death.

My fingers trembled as I reached for my neck, feeling for the Luna mark that should have been there, the symbol of my bond with Lucien. Nothing. The skin was smooth, unmarked.

A calendar on my nightstand caught my eye, and my blood turned to ice. Three days. Three days before my eighteenth birthday. Three days before the ceremony where I was supposed to accept Lucien as my mate and begin my path to becoming Luna.

I had been given a second chance.

This time, I would not be the naive girl who trusted in love and the Moon Goddess's plan. This time, I would be the predator, not the prey.

This time, I would rewrite my fate.
