Chapter 3

The heavy walnut doors I had just been shoved through violently swung inward, ripped open by two massive men in trench coats.

Warm air from the foyer rushed out, colliding with the freezing storm.

The sea of bodyguards parted. Alexander strode up the snow-covered steps, his heavy winter boots crushing the ice beneath his weight.

He didn't look at the guards. He didn't look at the sprawling estate. His sharp, icy gaze locked entirely on the scene inside the grand hall.

Arthur stood frozen near the velvet-draped table, the triumphant smirk melting off his face.

"Alexander Pierce," Arthur choked out, his voice dropping an octave.

The guests gasped. Even Clara stopped adjusting her diamond ring, her jaw going slack. Everyone in that room knew the ruthless Wall Street titan who dismantled corporations for sport.

Arthur scrambled forward, practically shoving Julian out of his way.

"Mr. Pierce, what an absolute honor," Arthur gushed, thrusting his hand out eagerly. "I didn't realize you were on the guest list tonight. Please, come in. Let me get you a fresh glass of champagne."

Alexander completely ignored the outstretched hand.

He stepped past Arthur as if the man were nothing more than a piece of cheap furniture.

Alexander stopped directly in front of me. The biting wind whipped my thin navy gown, but I didn't shiver. Not with him standing there.

He unclasped a heavy, custom silver-fox fur cloak from his arm and draped it over my shoulders. The thick material radiated warmth, instantly shielding me from the brutal cold.

"Your hands are freezing, Evelyn," Alexander murmured, his deep voice carrying effortlessly through the dead silent foyer.

He pulled a pair of fleece-lined leather gloves from his coat pocket. Grasping my right hand, he carefully slid the dark leather over my numb fingers.

Arthur awkwardly lowered his hand, his face flushing a deep, humiliated crimson. "Mr. Pierce, I assure you, this woman is trespassing. My security was just removing her."

Alexander didn't spare him a glance. He smoothed the leather over my left hand next.

"Are you finished playing this boring game?" Alexander asked me, his thumb brushing over my knuckles.

"I am," I replied, my voice steady. "The paperwork is signed."

"Good." Alexander finally lifted his head, his cold eyes sweeping over Arthur, Clara, and the twins. "This place reeks of desperation."

Arthur bristled, his chest puffing out beneath his charcoal suit. "Now see here, Pierce. I may respect your firm, but this is my property. You cannot just walk in here and insult my family."

"Your family," Alexander repeated flatly. He didn't yell. He didn't threaten. The absolute boredom in his tone was infinitely more terrifying.

"Yes, my family," Arthur snapped, gesturing to the boys. "I am reclaiming what is mine. Evelyn is nothing but a disgruntled former employee. She has no power here."

"She was bleeding my company dry," Arthur continued, desperately trying to salvage his image in front of a billionaire. "I had to step in. You understand how ruthless business can be, Mr. Pierce. I simply secured my assets."

"You didn't step in," I said, my voice cutting through his pathetic excuses. "You hid like a coward for eighteen years."

Clara gasped, pressing a hand to her chest. "Don't speak to my husband like that! You are just bitter because he chose me."

"I am completely indifferent to who he chooses," I replied.

Julian scoffed loudly, crossing his arms over his tailored shirt. "Let her go with him, Dad. She's just finding a new wallet to drain."

"Exactly," Leo sneered, stepping up beside his brother. "Look at her. Eighteen years pretending to be some high-class CEO, and the second she gets kicked to the curb, she runs straight to a sugar daddy."

Clara let out a high-pitched giggle, leaning against Arthur's shoulder. "I suppose she has to pay for her hotel somehow. Keep the cloak, Evelyn. You'll need it when he gets bored of you."

"You think you won," I said, looking directly at the boys I had raised.

"We did win," Julian shot back. "Dad took back everything. You don't have a dime."

"Enjoy the bus ride to the shelter," Leo added, flashing a nasty grin. "Maybe you can beg on the corner of Fifth Avenue."

I didn't argue. I didn't defend myself. I simply turned away from them, adjusting the heavy fur collar around my neck.

"Let's go," I told Alexander.

"Leaving so soon?" Arthur mocked, his confidence fully returning now that we were retreating. "Don't forget to pack up your cheap office decorations. I'll have security leave them in a cardboard box by the curb."

Alexander finally shifted his gaze back to Arthur. "You talk entirely too much."

The simple statement silenced the room. Arthur swallowed hard, taking a half-step backward.

"You are making a mistake, Pierce," Arthur warned, trying to keep his voice tough. "I am back now. I will be reclaiming my market share by the end of the quarter. You should be networking with me, not escorting my trash out the door."

"You do not have a market share," Alexander stated. "You have a signature on a piece of paper."

"That paper gives me everything," Arthur argued, patting his breast pocket where he had shoved the contract.

"It gives you exactly what you deserve," I told him.

I didn't pack a single bag. I didn't look back at the grand staircase, the antique chandeliers, or the life I had maintained for eighteen years. I walked down the icy steps, leaving the hollow shell of Arthur's empire behind.

Alexander walked beside me, his tall frame blocking the worst of the howling wind.

One of the men in black pulled open the rear door of the lead Rolls-Royce. I slid into the heated leather seat. Alexander climbed in beside me, bringing the sharp scent of snow and expensive cologne into the cabin.

The heavy door slammed shut, sealing us in quiet luxury.

Outside, Arthur stood on the porch, his fists clenched at his sides. The twins were laughing, pointing at the fleet of cars, clearly believing they had won the ultimate victory.

I pressed the silver button on the armrest.

The tinted window rolled down with a soft hum.

The freezing air rushed back in, but I ignored it. I rested my gloved hand on the door frame, staring directly into Arthur's eyes.

His arrogant smirk faltered under my empty gaze.

I didn't say a word. I didn't need to. The cold, final look I gave them spoke volumes. They were dead to me.

I rolled the window back up, cutting off their mocking laughter.

The driver shifted the car into gear. The massive engine purred to life, and the fleet of black vehicles began their descent down the winding, snow-covered driveway.

"They think they own the world," Alexander noted, leaning back against the headrest.

"Let them think it," I replied, unfastening the clasp of the heavy fur cloak. "Arthur always was blinded by his own ego."

"He signed the transfer?"

"Every single page. He didn't even read the subsidiary clauses."

"He was too busy gloating to notice the finer print," Alexander said, turning his head to look at me. "He actually believes he just inherited a gold mine."

"He inherited a graveyard," I corrected him. "I moved the patents, the liquid capital, and the tech divisions three days ago. The only thing left in that holding company is fifty million dollars in toxic debt."

Alexander's mouth twitched into a rare, approving smile. He reached into the leather briefcase resting on the floorboard. He pulled out a slim, black tablet and handed it to me.

"You planned this perfectly," he said.

I took the device, my leather-clad fingers tapping the screen to wake it up.

The display illuminated the dark backseat, casting a pale blue glow over my face. It wasn't a bank statement. It wasn't a flight itinerary.

A bold, red countdown timer flashed in the center of the screen, ticking down the seconds.

Below the numbers, a single line of text read: The legal trap closes at 9 AM tomorrow.
