My Quarterback Boyfriend Chose His First Love at Prom, So I Chose His Rival
Chapter 3
The grand ballroom of the Grandview Hotel glittered under hundreds of silver stars suspended from the vaulted ceiling. Warm fairy lights wound through floral garlands along the perimeter, casting a soft glow over seniors in tuxedos and evening gowns, proud parents, faculty members, and alumni gathered around the polished wooden floor. Near the main stage, the student council media team manned two tripods, streaming the night live to thousands of viewers across the state.
At the center of the stage, the student council president adjusted his microphone, his voice echoing through the speakers.
"Westbridge Prep, the moment you've all been waiting for! Please welcome our golden couple, Blake Carter and Avery Bennett!"
The house lights dimmed. A bright spotlight swung toward the main entrance.
I stepped through the double doors alone.
The champagne satin of my gown caught the glare of the spotlight, shimmering with every step. Around my neck, the delicate diamond pendant my mother gave me rested against my collarbone. My head was high, my shoulders square, and there was not a trace of hesitation in my stride.
Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind across dry grass. Heads turned left and right, guests craning their necks toward the foyer behind me, searching for the state's star quarterback.
Near the front of the dance floor, Madison stared at me with wide, panicked eyes. She waved her hands frantically, gesturing for me to step back into the shadows, to stall, to hide. Beside her, three varsity football players nudged each other, smirking as they waited for me to crumble and stand alone in the dark.
I did not stop until I reached the edge of the stage. The master of ceremonies blinked at me, looking down at his cue cards in confusion.
I reached out and took the wireless microphone smoothly from his hand.
"There's been a change of plans," I said, my voice steady and clear, ringing out across the dead-silent ballroom. "Blake Carter won't be joining us tonight. But Westbridge's opening dance will go on as scheduled."
I lowered the microphone and turned my gaze back toward the heavy mahogany doors at the entrance. The spotlight wavered for a second before sweeping back to the foyer, tracking my line of sight.
For a moment, nobody breathed. The smug smirks on the faces of the varsity boys in the front row froze.
Then, a tall figure stepped out of the shadows and into the blinding pool of light.
A collective gasp ripped through the room. The comment feed on the student council's live stream monitor exploded into a blur of text.
It was Asher Hayes.
Westbridge’s quiet, fiercely talented transfer student—the backup quarterback who had been threatening Blake’s starting position all season.
He was dressed in an impeccably tailored black tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders perfectly, looking leagues more refined than any high school senior had the right to. His dark hair was styled back, his jaw sharp, completely unbothered by the hundreds of staring eyes and flashing cameras.
He didn't look at the crowd. He didn't glance at Madison, whose jaw had practically dropped to the floor, or the media team scrambling to zoom in on his face. His calm, gray eyes were locked entirely on me.
He walked down the center aisle with a quiet, effortless confidence. When he reached the edge of the stage, he didn't hesitate. He stopped at the bottom of the steps, held out his hand, and looked up at me with a faint, reassuring smile.
"Ready?" he asked softly.
I handed the microphone back to the paralyzed MC, picked up the train of my champagne satin skirt, and walked gracefully down the steps. I placed my hand in Asher's. His grip was warm, firm, and incredibly grounding.
He led me to the dead center of the polished wooden floor. The student orchestra, completely bewildered but following their conductor's frantic cue, struck the opening chords of the traditional senior waltz.
Asher’s hand slid to my waist, pulling me the perfect distance against him. We began to move, gliding across the floor under the silver stars.
The entire school watched in absolute stunned silence as the star quarterback's loyal shadow danced effortlessly with his greatest rival, stealing the breath from the room.
