Chapter 3

The Plaza Hotel staff had arranged for our luggage to be moved to the penthouse suite—the same suite that should have been the beginning of our honeymoon. Now it felt like the setting for an entirely different kind of drama. The champagne and rose petals that had been scattered across the king-sized bed seemed to mock me as I stepped into the room, Alexander following close behind.

I waited until the door clicked shut before I turned to face him.

"So," I said, my voice eerily calm even to my own ears. "Are we going to discuss what happened today?"

Alexander loosened his bow tie and ran a hand through his hair—that nervous habit again. "Victoria, I swear to you, I have never seen that woman before in my life." He crossed the room and took my hands in his. "On my mother's grave, I swear it."

I studied his face carefully. Alexander's mother had passed away when he was sixteen—it was his most sacred oath. But something wasn't right. His eyes darted away from mine too quickly, his gestures more expansive than usual as he continued his explanation.

"She's clearly delusional or looking for a payday. Think about it—why would she choose our wedding day unless she wanted maximum impact? It's extortion, pure and simple."

He was talking too much, offering details I hadn't asked for. In the three years I'd known him, I'd watched Alexander close million-dollar deals with a confidence that bordered on arrogance. Now he was overexplaining, his hands moving in broader gestures with each sentence.

"The Chicago conference was in March," he continued, pacing now. "I was only there for three days. Everyone on my team can verify my schedule—meetings all day, business dinners at night. There wasn't time for...whatever she's suggesting."

March. Six months ago. The exact timeline for Sophia's pregnancy.

"You've never mentioned Chicago," I said quietly, watching his reaction.

His step faltered. "It was just another business trip." He shrugged, too casually. "Nothing worth mentioning."

I moved to the minibar and poured myself a glass of water, needing something to do with my hands. "I think I'd like to sleep alone tonight."

"Victoria—"

"I need time to process," I cut him off, my tone leaving no room for argument. "This was supposed to be our wedding day, Alexander. Instead, I've been humiliated in front of everyone we know. Whether her claims are true or not, I deserve one night to myself."

He looked like he wanted to argue but thought better of it. "Of course. Whatever you need." He hesitated by the door. "I love you, Victoria. That's the only truth that matters."

After he left, I sat on the edge of the bed, carefully removing the pearl hairpins my mother had given me that morning. "Something borrowed, something new," she had said as she fastened them into my updo. I doubted she had anticipated how the day would unfold.

The next morning, while Alexander was at the office—he'd left early, claiming an emergency meeting—I made a call to Charles Harrington, our family lawyer.

"I need a recommendation," I said without preamble. "Someone discreet, thorough, and not connected to either family."

"A private investigator," Charles replied, not a question but a statement. After a pause, he added, "I know someone. James Morrison. Former FBI, now runs his own firm. He's the best, and he knows how to keep his mouth shut."

Two hours later, I sat across from James Morrison in a quiet corner of a café ten blocks from our penthouse. He was older than I expected, with shrewd eyes that missed nothing.

"I need to know if my husband is the father of this woman's child," I said, sliding a manila envelope across the table. "Inside you'll find his credit card information, travel records from six months ago, and what little I know about the woman—Sophia Martinez."

James opened the envelope, scanning the contents with practiced efficiency. "Standard rate is $500 per day plus expenses. This type of investigation usually takes about two weeks."

I removed my checkbook. "I'll pay you from my personal trust fund. My husband cannot know about this."

With James on the case, I returned home and waited for Alexander to leave for work the following day. As soon as his car pulled away from the building, I made my way to his home office—a room I rarely entered out of respect for his privacy. How ironic that seemed now.

I knew his filing system well enough—Alexander was methodical to a fault. Tax records in the left drawer, business contracts in the right, personal documents in the center. It was the bottom drawer, always locked, that interested me now. The key he kept hidden behind the framed photo of us in Santorini was exactly where I expected it to be.

Inside the drawer were passports, birth certificates, and several folders marked "confidential." But what caught my eye was a statement from a credit card I didn't recognize, tucked between two legal documents.

My heart pounded as I carefully extracted it, noting the dates that coincided exactly with the Chicago conference. Hotel charges at the Four Seasons—not the conference hotel. Restaurant bills for two at intimate, expensive venues. A receipt from Tiffany & Co. for a platinum bracelet that had never adorned my wrist.

With trembling hands, I photographed each page with my phone, careful to document every damning detail before returning everything to its precise location.

As I locked the drawer and replaced the key, a cold clarity washed over me. The truth was beginning to emerge, and with it, the first whispers of a plan began to form in my mind.
