Chapter 4

Drake was holding Melanie like she was his whole world. Every gentle touch, every sweet word, felt like a stab to my heart. He brushed a strand of hair from her face and kissed her forehead, and I could barely breathe.

Then, as if to twist the knife, he bent down and placed his hand on her belly, smiling that warm, adoring smile I’d never seen him give me. My stomach turned as he kissed her bump, whispering, “I can’t wait to meet our little one.”

Those words echoed in my mind like some cruel joke. *Our little one.* The love in his voice, the tenderness in his touch—it was all for her, for their unborn child. Meanwhile, I was just... nothing.

As he whispered promises to her and their pup, memories came flooding back. I remembered my first pregnancy, how thrilled I’d been, how nervous. But Drake had barely cared. “Our pup has an Alpha’s blood,” he’d shrugged, brushing off every worry I had. “Alpha pups are born strong. They don’t need coddling.”

He’d been distant for the second pregnancy too, always busy with his “Beta’s duties.” But now, here he was, pouring all the love I’d only dreamed of into this new life with her.

I clenched my teeth, forcing myself not to cry as I watched him kiss her belly again. My heart felt like it was breaking, but I knew I couldn’t let them see me like this. I had to stay strong—for myself, and for my own unborn pup.

Melanie’s laugh snapped me back to the present. She placed her hand over his, smiling, “Drake, I can’t wait for us to be a family. Our pup’s going to have the best father.”

The best father? I felt a surge of anger as memories of his neglect flooded back. The distance, the way he’d brushed off every concern I’d had, and here he was, practically worshipping her and their future together!

He pulled her close, murmuring, “They don’t understand us. But none of that matters now. We have each other, and soon, we’ll have our pup.”

I bit my lip, holding back a sob. The first raindrops started falling, cool and light, but they quickly turned into a steady downpour. I watched as Drake and Melanie stopped, looking up at the sky, and my heart twisted at what he did next.

Without a second thought, he shrugged off his jacket and draped it over her head to keep her dry. “Come on, let’s get you out of the wet,” he said, his voice soft and caring.

She laughed, clinging to his arm. “Always looking out for me, aren’t you?” she teased, and he just smiled, brushing a strand of her wet hair behind her ear.

“Of course,” he murmured, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

I stood there, frozen, soaked from head to toe. Memories hit hard. The last time I’d been caught in the rain like this, I’d come home drenched, shivering, with my clothes stuck to my skin. I’d been pregnant with our first child then, hoping Drake might at least hand me a towel. But he barely looked at me, just walked straight into our bedroom without a word.

Not a towel, not even a bit of concern.

But here he was, fussing over Melanie, making sure she stayed dry, laughing with her like she was all that mattered. I watched him rub her shoulder, holding her close, and every little touch felt like a reminder of the times he’d ignored me, all the moments I’d needed him but he wasn’t there.

“You’re soaked,” he chuckled, pulling her even closer under his jacket. “Let’s get you home before you catch a cold.”

I clenched my fists, feeling the rain on my face, not even sure if it was rain or tears. All I knew was watching them felt like reliving every time he’d pushed me aside.

As they turned to leave, Melanie’s gaze shifted. For a brief second, her eyes locked onto mine, hidden in the shadows. Melanie leaned into him, her voice playful. "Drake, what if Cassandra catches us out here in the rain? You know she’s always watching."

Drake chuckled, "Don’t worry about her… She’s probably asleep by now," he said, his tone so casual it stung. "Besides, what’s she going to do? Scold us for enjoying a moment together?"
