Chapter 3

That night, I sat alone in my lab, surrounded by the evidence of Marcus's betrayal. The vials of poison gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights, each one a testament to his calculated cruelty. Three years of my life, stolen by the man who had sworn to protect me. Three years of believing I was sick, when in reality, I was being systematically destroyed by my own mate.

My wolf paced restlessly within me, growing stronger with each hour that passed without Marcus's poison flowing through my veins. Her rage mirrored my own, a burning fury that threatened to consume us both.

*Marcus*, I called through our mind-link, my mental voice steady despite the trembling in my hands.

His response came immediately, dripping with condescension. *What is it now, Aria? Shouldn't you be resting?*

*I want the truth about Victoria*, I demanded. *All of it. When did it start?*

A long pause followed, and I could almost see him calculating his response, weighing how much to reveal now that his deception had been exposed.

*Before our mating ceremony*, he finally admitted, his mental voice cold and detached. *She was always the one I wanted.*

The revelation struck like a physical blow. Even our sacred bonding had been a lie. *The rogue attack... the one where she supposedly saved you...*

*A clever performance*, he replied, and I could feel his amusement rippling through our bond. *Victoria has always been... creative.*

*Why me?* I whispered through the link, hating the vulnerability in my question but needing to understand. *Why go through with our mating if you wanted her?*

*Politics, of course.* His mental voice hardened with contempt. *The daughter of pack heroes. A brilliant healer with impeccable bloodlines. You were the perfect political choice, Aria. The pack respected you. The Council approved. You were a pawn, nothing more.*

I severed the link abruptly, unable to bear another word. His casual cruelty, the years of calculated deception—it was too much. I pressed my palms against my eyes, fighting back tears that would do nothing to save me now.

"We need to leave," I whispered to my wolf. "Tonight."

With shaking hands, I activated my encrypted communication device—a precaution I'd taken years ago when researching sensitive genetic information. Dr. Elena Morrison's face appeared on the screen, her expression shifting from surprise to concern as she took in my appearance.

"Aria? What's happened?"

"I need your help," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "Marcus has been poisoning me for years. Wolfsbane and silver. He's planning to reject me at the next full moon."

Elena's sharp intake of breath was the only indication of her shock. Always the professional, she immediately shifted into action mode. "I have contacts in the Moonstone Pack in the Pacific Northwest. Alpha Selene is fair and protective of her members. I can arrange safe passage and a new identity."

"How soon?"

"Three days," she said firmly. "I'll create documentation for 'Lyra Blake,' a healer seeking sanctuary after losing her pack to a territory dispute. Can you hold out that long?"

"I'll have to," I replied, straightening my shoulders. "Send me the details through this channel only."

Over the next three days, I moved with calculated precision. During the day, I played the role of the dutiful, sickly Luna, accepting Marcus's poisoned remedies and pretending to grow weaker. At night, I worked feverishly, transferring all my research to encrypted servers that only I could access.

I carefully liquidated my personal accounts—the ones Marcus didn't know about, set up years ago to fund my private research. I packed only what couldn't be traced: a few cherished photos of my parents, my mother's old journal, and the essential research that might one day help other wolves suffering from real conditions.

On the third night, as Marcus slept soundly beside Victoria in what he thought was a secret meeting place, I stood in my lab one last time. My new identity—Lyra Blake—waited for me in a sealed envelope. My transport to the Moonstone Pack territory would depart at dawn.

I ran my fingers over my workstation, remembering the years of dedication, the breakthroughs and setbacks. All of it built on lies.

"Goodbye, Aria Blackwood," I whispered to my reflection in the glass cabinet. The woman who stared back at me was thinner, paler than she should be, but her eyes burned with a determination I hadn't seen in years.

My wolf howled softly within me, no longer the weakened creature Marcus had systematically suppressed. She was awakening, growing stronger with each passing hour, and she thirsted for justice.

As I turned to leave, I caught a glimpse of the Silver Ridge Pack crest hanging on the wall—the symbol I had once worn with pride. Soon, Marcus would discover that the mate he had underestimated had disappeared without a trace. And by then, Aria Blackwood would be nothing but a ghost, and Lyra Blake would be rising from her ashes.
