Our Marriage's Final Chapter
Chapter 2
The doctor said the patient could only hold on for another two hours at most.
I panicked.
So I decided to go find Kyle for medicine in person.
I didn't go directly, I first found his assistant.
He started to hesitate and didn't say anything. I used my identity as his fiancée to pressurize him, and he finally told me where Kyle was at the moment.
It's a famous wealthy area, it's Bethany's home.
There was lightning and thunder outside, but I didn't care about that.
I ran in despite the heavy rain, without any delay, and fell numerous times in the process.
It was too big inside, it took me an hour just to find the villa.
I was soaked all over, and looked disheveled as I knocked on the door.
When he saw me, Kyle instinctively blocked Bethany.
Not in a good mood, he asked, "What are you doing here?"
He thought I was like a fierce beast, hurting his Bethany.
I didn't answer. I looked straight at him and said, "Where is the medicine?"
Kyle frowned and said, "Medicine, medicine, have you ever seen Bethany sad because her goldfish died since she was young? Do you only care about medicine? Are you heartless?"
Was I heartless?
I was not familiar with Bethany, let alone the fish she raised.
I didn't understand, "So what? Should I mourn for her goldfish's death and wear mourning clothes just because I came to get medicine?"
Kyle was angered by my indifferent attitude.
"Don't you have any empathy? You will know when your parents die!"
At these words, it was like a bolt from the blue.
How absurd.
Can Kyle take my parents' lives and compare them with a goldfish raised by Bethany?
I had difficulties to express, but I knew it's urgent to take the medicine now.
The remaining dozen lives couldn't wait anymore.
My parents and sister were still waiting for me at the hospital.
I softened my tone and smiled bitterly. "I'm sorry, your pet fish died, and I'm also very sad. Please mourn for it. So Kyle, can you give me the medicine now..."
Seeing me weaken, Kyle's expression eased a bit.
He handed me the glass tube with the reagent.
I treasured it and carefully put it in my pocket.
The doctor called to urge me at this time, and I told him the news of getting the medicine.
They were full of joy and said they were waiting for me over there.
I was just about to breathe a sigh of relief when Bethany suddenly spoke up.
"Kyle, I feel like the fish just moved! Maybe it's not dead, shall we go see Dr. Allen again?"
I felt a sudden surge of emotion and looked at her.
She looked sad, and when Kyle looked at the fish in her arms, she provocatively glanced at me.
Kyle relied on her naturally, "Then let's go to the hospital again."
I quickly grabbed his hand, my legs were weak. "Take me to the hospital first..."
Kyle impatiently shook me off and said, "I've given you the medicine, what more do you want?"
I fell heavily to the ground and grabbed his trouser leg, saying, "Kyle, it's a matter of life and death. I can't delay any longer. I must immediately go back and deliver the medicine."
They couldn't wait anymore.
It took me an hour just to run out of the villa area.
They couldn't wait anymore.
Bethany cried. "Kyle, maybe there is still hope for the fish. We have to go to the hospital right away."
Kyle paid full attention to her, full of concern.
I felt deeply disappointed.
Indeed, I heard him say, "I will take Bethany to the hospital first, you can wait here, I will let the assistant come to pick you up."
I was stunned.
I crawled towards Kyle on my knees, abandoning all dignity.
"Kyle, I beg you, I can't lose my parents..."
I have repeatedly defied him.
This made him very unhappy.
"Ruby Norris, you have to have a limit when lying! They were fine when I last saw them. They haven't even been in the intensive care unit. Now you're saying they're dying. Who would believe that?"
I stared at him with wide eyes.
He spoke with such conviction, as if he had just seen them yesterday.
But it's been seven months since Kyle last met my parents!
A year ago, the whole village drank water from the heavily polluted village river reservoir.
As a result, 72 people in the village developed uremia within a year, with no survivors.
Just a week ago, their condition suddenly worsened. Dialysis couldn't even stop it.
Only the special medicine developed in the pharmaceutical factory abroad by Kyle can suppress this type of illness.
I pleaded for him to agree to send the medicine.
Yesterday was the day he promised to send the medicine.
But he stood me up.
It seemed that Bethany's pet fish had died...
I can't feel any emotions right now, I can only send medicine to the hospital to save their lives.
But Kyle held Bethany and got on the car.
I followed crazily and seized this last opportunity.
I held onto the car door handle but couldn't open it. It was locked from the inside.
I could only helplessly tap on the car window and say, "Kyle, take me to the hospital. If it's not possible, just drop me off at the entrance..."
In a moment, the car window slid down, revealing his cold eyes.
"Bethany said she doesn't like the car being dirty, so please wait a moment."
After finishing speaking, the car started and drove away.
I was dragged out because I didn't let go.
Afraid that the medicine in my arms would be damaged, I quickly let go.
I could only watch the car getting farther and farther away from me.
Because of the friction with the ground, my clothes and pants were torn, and there were large patches of blood in the water.
What made me feel more painful was my stomach.
It felt like someone was smashing my internal organs.
I looked incredulously at the large mass of blood flowing out from under me.
I remembered.
A week ago, I found out that I was pregnant, but I didn't have time to be happy.
Then I received news that the villagers' conditions were deteriorating one after another, including my family.
I was the only one working outside the village and have never drunk polluted water, so I was concentrated on asking caregivers to take care of them.
I have put aside the matter of my pregnancy.
I haven't had time to be happy...
But I knew I was about to lose him.
The pain made me dizzy.
But there was silence around me, with on one giving me a helping hand.
But I couldn't just give up like this.
I gritted my teeth and stood up in pain.
I had to go back, they were waiting for me...
I held on and made it to the hospital.
The attending doctor's face was serious. "Why did you come so late? The medicine is here now, but what's the use..."
But when he saw the miserable state of being soaked all over, with tattered clothes and a pool of blood under his feet, he fell silent.
"What happened to you?"
I ignored his concerns.
Only his words echoed in my ears.
The smile on my lips froze, and the light in my eyes disappeared.
I murmured, "What?"
In the end, I couldn't hold on and collapsed.
