Chapter 1

As a leading authority in reproductive medicine, I'd been invited to another city for a lecture and charity medical consultation.

That evening, the hospital admitted a male patient. Apparently, he'd sustained an injury during intercourse that could affect his fertility.

The hospital asked me to perform the surgery.

What I didn't expect was the sight that greeted me when I arrived.

My wife was on her knees.

"Please, you have to save my husband."

"We don't have children yet. Please, you have to fix him."

The same woman who lorded over me at home, who barked orders at me like I was the help, was now kneeling on a hospital floor, begging for another man's life.

I walked up to her calmly and held out the informed consent form.

"We'll do everything we can. This is the consent form. Look it over, and if everything's in order, sign it."

I locked eyes with her and let my voice harden. "Make sure you fill in your relationship to the patient clearly."

...

Constance Dotson stared at me, stunned.

If she could do it over, she would've asked where I was going. Which hospital. Which city.

But she hadn't cared enough to ask.

When had she stopped caring?

There was nothing sweet left in my memories. Only bitterness.

Ever since that incident, we hadn't been intimate in what felt like years. We barely even spoke. Our conversations had dwindled to almost nothing.

I'd tried everything to reach her, to crack open the door she'd sealed shut.

Years of effort, and I never managed to thaw that ice. Eventually, my own warmth started to fade.

I'd known for a long time this marriage would end.

But watching her kneel for another man still drove needles straight through my heart.

It wasn't that she'd forgotten how to love. She just didn't love me anymore.

And she loved him with a recklessness that bordered on madness. Why else would he have ended up in a hospital with that kind of injury?

I swallowed the urge to scream. To throw a punch.

If I lost control tonight, if I showed even a crack, I'd become the laughingstock of the entire medical community. Everyone would know. Corey Armstrong, the cuckold.

It had already happened. But something in me refused to let the rest of the world see it.

"Doctor, I've signed it."

Constance's voice pulled me back.

I glanced down at the form. Under Relationship to Patient, two words, written in clear, unhesitating script: Spouse.

Not a flicker of guilt on her face. She'd claimed another man as her husband, right in front of me, without so much as flinching.

"Whatever it costs, please make sure my husband recovers. My happiness and my entire future depend on it."

I said nothing. I turned and walked into the operating room.

The patient was already on the table, his face contorted with pain.

I stared at that face, and something churned deep in my gut.

Treat him, or don't?

Or treat him, but not all the way?

"Dr. Armstrong, you don't look so good. Are you feeling all right?"

I snapped back. "Prep the anesthesia."

Four hours later, I stepped out of the OR.

Constance rushed toward me like a dutiful wife. "Doctor, how is he? How's my husband?"

"The surgery was successful."

In the war between personal feelings and professional integrity, the latter won.

It was the first surgery in my entire career where success left me in agony.

More than once during the procedure, I'd fought the urge to castrate the man on my table.

But I wasn't alone in this world. My parents were still alive. That was the generation above me to consider.

And I had two children. That was the generation below.

Every move I made would ripple through this family.

An adult doesn't get the luxury of acting on impulse.

It was suffocating. But I swallowed it.

I couldn't let my parents or my children see me break.

I couldn't let my anger drag them into consequences none of us could predict.

But I wasn't a saint. I had feelings. I knew love, and I knew hate.
