Chapter 1

NORA'S POV

My right ankle was burning inside the brace.

I shifted my weight in the wings of the Halloway Theater and tried not to think about the four-inch heels I'd promised my physical therapist I wouldn't wear. Tonight was worth the blister. In my clutch sat a folded letter from Dr. Patel, signed that morning: *Cleared for full return to performance.*

Eighteen months of rehab, and I was a dancer again.

Julian didn't know. I'd planned to hand it to him after the press launch, right before dinner, because tonight was our sixth anniversary and I wanted him to hear it from me first.

The house lights dropped. A spotlight cut across the stage, hot and white, and the room went quiet.

Julian walked into it like he'd been born there. Charcoal suit, easy smile, the director every critic in New York wanted to interview. My husband.

He wasn't alone.

He was holding Savannah Lane's hand.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian said, lifting their joined hands toward the crowd, "the woman who made this show possible: Savannah Lane."

The applause hit me like a wall.

Behind them, the giant screen lit up with the tour title, *Red Thread*, and underneath it: *Concept & Choreography by Savannah Lane.*

Music started. Eight dancers ran a short preview across the apron, and I knew every count before they hit it. The hitch on five. The broken turn on seven. I'd reworked that phrase on our kitchen floor while my ankle was still in a boot, humming it to Julian while he took notes on his phone.

I looked at the camera monitor beside the stage manager. The live feed showed Julian, Savannah, the dancers, the logo.

My name wasn't anywhere.

---

Savannah turned to wave at the balcony, and something in her dark hair caught the light.

Ivory pearls. A slim silver spine.

My hand went to the back of my head before I even understood why. My fingers found the empty clip I'd pinned there for it this morning, when I couldn't locate the comb on my dresser and figured I'd left it in the car.

My mother had sewn every one of those pearls onto that comb herself, the winter she got sick. She'd done it at the kitchen table with shaking hands, refusing my help. *A dancer should have one thing on her that's only hers,* she'd said.

She was the one who taught me to count music. I was six, and she held my wrists and tapped the beats against my skin until I could feel them without hearing them.

And now it was in Savannah's hair.

When the preview ended and the screen rolled into a sizzle reel, Julian walked Savannah offstage into the wings, laughing about something. They stopped at the makeup station, right in front of the lit mirror.

Two hours ago, at that same mirror, Julian had asked me to kneel and check the satin strap on Savannah's shoe. "You know how these things should fit, babe," he'd said. And I'd done it, because that's what I always did.

Now he reached up and gently straightened the comb in her hair.

"That's mine," I said.

They both turned. Savannah's eyes widened in a way that was almost convincing.

"Nora." Julian's smile didn't move. "You made it."

"Take it out."

"It's just for tonight," he said, lowering his voice. "Wardrobe wanted something with history. It photographs beautifully."

"It's my mother's."

"I know. That's why it works." He touched my elbow like I was a nervous guest. "Honestly, your mom would be thrilled. Her comb on the biggest stage in New York? She'd be proud to be part of this."

Something cold settled in my chest.

"My mother is dead, Julian. Stop telling me what she'd want."

Savannah reached up and tugged at the comb, a little too hard. One pearl popped loose, bounced off the counter, and rolled under the mirror.

"Oh my God, I'm so sorry," she breathed. "I'll be more careful with it."

She didn't take it off.

---

"And now," the host called from center stage, "let's bring out the creative team for photos!"

Julian guided Savannah back into the light. I followed, one step past the curtain line.

Julian turned and stopped right in front of me, blocking my path with his shoulders. Then he angled toward the press and laughed.

"Everybody knows my wife, Nora," he said into his mic. "She was a beautiful dancer. After her injury, though, that chapter closed. She's been an amazing support through all of this."

*Was.*

Cameras flashed. A few people in the front row gave me those soft, pitying smiles you give someone at a funeral.

Savannah stepped around him, holding out a wireless microphone. Her voice was warm enough to fool anyone who wasn't standing two feet away.

"Nora, would you say a few words? It would mean so much to have your blessing."

All over the orchestra seats, phones went up.

I took the microphone. It was warm from her hand. I could feel Julian watching me, waiting for me to smooth it over, the way I'd smoothed over every missed dinner, every late rehearsal, every time he'd introduced my ideas as his.

I opened my clutch and took out the thin blue folder I'd brought for Dr. Patel's letter. Tucked behind it was my notebook. Blue ink, dated pages, every count of *Red Thread* written in my handwriting.

I didn't hold it up. I just looked down at it, then back at the screen.

*Concept & Choreography by Savannah Lane.*

I memorized it.

"My ankle is injured," I said into the mic. "My name isn't."

The room went still. Julian's jaw tightened.

I handed the microphone back to Savannah and walked off the stage.

---

I took the side exit into the service hallway, where the noise of the theater dropped to a hum.

At the corner, I stopped and unpinned the silver brooch from my dress. Julian had given it to me that morning. A tiny pair of pointe shoes, engraved with *Six years, my muse.*

I dropped it into my clutch without looking at it again.

Then I pulled out my phone and texted Marisa, my lawyer.

*I need to talk about a divorce. And about who legally owns the choreography for Red Thread. Tomorrow, first thing.*

The reply bubble appeared almost instantly. *Call me at 8. Don't sign anything.*

My phone buzzed again before I could put it away.

Julian.

*Come back. Savannah wants a photo with you. It'll look bad if you don't.*

Another one came right behind it.

*Also need you at the studio by 9 tomorrow. Act two transitions are still rough. Fix them before the dancers get in.*

I read it twice. He wanted me to fix the work he'd just given away, so she could keep taking bows for it.

I turned off notifications and kept walking, Dr. Patel's letter folded in my fist.

The freight elevator at the end of the hall was open. I stepped in and hit the lobby button. Outside, thunder rolled hard enough that I felt it through the floor.

The doors slid shut.

The lights flickered once, buzzed, and died. The elevator lurched and stopped dead.

Total darkness. My heartbeat was suddenly the loudest thing in the world.

Then, from the corner I'd thought was empty, a low male voice spoke.

"Nora? It's Gabriel Stone. Don't move until we know where the floor is."
