Chapter 5

"She set me up," Julian said, still staring at the forged loan application.

On the safe room monitor, he held the paper close to the desk lamp, comparing the signature with the one on his driver's license. The differences were microscopic. Whoever had copied his hand had known the exact angle of his J and the impatient slash he used through the final n.

"Lila handled the blank forms before the bank rejected them," he said. "No one else saw them."

"He finally understands the first crime," Nora murmured.

"He understands that it happened to him," I said. "That is not the same as understanding what it cost me."

Ethan had already turned away. He reached into the cedar box and pulled out envelope number twelve. When he tore it open, a glossy photograph slipped free and landed faceup on the Persian rug.

He crouched to retrieve it, then went still.

The picture showed his high school track team from four years earlier. A thick red cross had been drawn over Ethan's chest. On the back, in block letters, someone had written SEVENTY-TWO HOURS.

I remembered the afternoon the principal had handed it to me in a clear evidence sleeve. Ethan had been furious that I arrived before the final bell. He had demanded to know why I was making a scene, while the school resource officer advised me to treat the threat as adolescent intimidation unless a second incident occurred. I had asked what would happen if the second incident was a body. No one answered.

For three weeks, I learned the license plates of every car near the west gate. I moved Ethan's practices to different tracks, canceled his rides with friends, and carried pepper spray in one pocket and the police report in the other. The watcher never approached him again. Ethan only remembered that I ruined his season.

Julian stepped around the desk. "Where did Mara get that?"

"It was in my locker," Ethan whispered. "The school called it a prank."

He unfolded the letter and began to read.

"The police filed a report and moved on. Your father was away with investors. I pulled you from the team, drove you to every class, and waited outside the gates for twenty-one days. If the threat came from Crossline, I would not let you pay for our mistakes. I made sure whoever was watching saw me instead of you."

Ethan's voice broke. He lowered the page and stared at the red mark over his younger face.

Julian rubbed a hand over his mouth. "Why did she never show me?"

"Because you weren't there," Ethan said. "You called her hysterical from a golf course."

"I didn't know there was a photograph."

"You knew she was scared enough to sit outside my school for three weeks." Ethan looked up sharply. "You still told me she needed a hobby."

The accusation landed. Julian's shoulders sagged, but he tried to recover. "I thought she was overprotective. I thought the school had handled it."

Ethan pulled out his phone and searched an old message thread. He set the screen beside the photograph. A blue bubble from four years earlier filled the display.

I wish you would stop controlling my life. I wish you would leave me alone.

"I sent that from the driveway," he said. "She had just followed me home because a black SUV had been circling the block. I told my friends she was crazy."

Julian reached for his shoulder. Ethan knocked his hand away.

"You agreed with me," Ethan said. "Every time Mom protected us, you translated it into control because that made your life easier."

"We did not have all the facts," Julian said.

"We had enough." Ethan's eyes shone, but his voice hardened. "Ten days ago she was in a trauma ward. We knew that. She called fourteen times. You told me to block her because Lila said Mom would interfere with the transfer."

Julian looked toward the scattered letters rather than at his son. "We need to find the rest of the financial records. If Lila forged the loan, there may be more."

Ethan laughed once, without humor. "Your wife is presumed dead, and you are still thinking about the company."

"The company may explain why someone tried to kill her."

"Or it may explain why you let someone isolate her."

The phone in Julian's coat began to ring.

He pulled it out. Lila's name glowed across the screen.

"Put it on speaker," Ethan said.

Julian answered and set the phone beside the photograph.

"Where are you?" Lila asked. Her breathing was quick, as if she had been running.

"At Mara's inherited house."

A beat of silence followed. "Get out. The police are reviewing Crossline's logistics accounts."

Julian's eyes moved to the forged loan form. "Let them. I have nothing to hide."

"Mara stole a cedar box from my office," Lila said. "It contains Vale Relief donor files and confidential vendor contracts. Bring it to my apartment before the police seize it."

Nora leaned closer to the monitor. "She knows the invoices are in there."

Julian looked at the box and the rows of unopened envelopes. "What exactly are you afraid they will find?"

"Proprietary information. Do not make this harder than it is."

Ethan bent toward the speaker. "We're reading Mom's letters."

Lila's breathing stopped.

When she spoke again, every trace of warmth had vanished. "Ethan is there?"

"Yes," Julian said.

"Then listen carefully. You have sixty minutes to bring me that box. If you refuse, I will tell the police why Mara's brakes were cut."

Julian went rigid. "What does that mean?"

"It means I have documents showing you wanted her gone before the divorce filing reached the board."

"There was no divorce filing."

"I drafted one under Mara's credentials," Lila said. "It names you as the beneficiary of her death and attaches your authorization to the transfer agreement. By the time the detectives verify the metadata, you will already be in an interview room without counsel."

Julian's face changed. He was no longer looking at a former lover or business partner. He was looking at someone who had prepared his prison sentence in advance.

"The police do not know that yet," Lila continued. Her voice dropped to a calm whisper. "Sixty minutes, Julian. After that, I tell them you ordered the sabotage."

The call ended.

A calendar alert appeared on Julian's screen. COUNTDOWN TO DELIVERY.

The timer rolled from 60:00 to 59:59.
