Chapter 3

"Look closely at the shear marks, Mr. Cross."

The detective’s voice crackled through the safe room speakers. On the flat-screen monitor, two severed brake lines completely filled the frame. The rubber tubing showed clean, straight cuts.

Julian stood up so fast his plastic chair tipped backward and smacked against the interrogation room floor.

"This is murder," Julian shouted, slamming his palms onto the table. "Someone tried to kill my wife. I want a full reinvestigation. I want the state police involved right now."

"He is pivoting," I told Nora, keeping my eyes on my husband’s performance.

"He has to," Nora replied, crossing her arms over her dark suit jacket. "If he plays dumb about the brakes, he becomes the prime suspect. Anger is his best defense."

"He already is the prime suspect." I gripped the edge of the steel table. "He knows exactly who cut those lines."

Nora studied Julian's face on the frozen frame. "Knowing the brakes were cut is not the same as ordering it."

"No," I said. "But he knew Lila needed me silent for forty-eight hours. He knew I had started tracing money out of Crossline. Whether he touched the car or merely looked away while she handled the problem, the result was the same: I went over the guardrail, and neither of them answered the hospital."

Nora unmuted the feed just long enough to capture Julian demanding the detective preserve every scrap of the wreck. His outrage arrived too cleanly, as if he had rehearsed the role on the drive to the station.

On the screen, Ethan remained frozen in his seat. The arrogant sneer had vanished from my nineteen-year-old son’s face. He stared at the glossy photographs of the sabotaged brake assembly, his chest rising and falling in quick, shallow jerks.

"Dad," Ethan muttered, his voice barely audible over the microphone. "Who would do this to her?"

Julian ignored him. He leaned closer to the detective. "Find whoever did this. Tear this city apart if you have to."

Nora hit the mute button on the terminal console. The interrogation room went silent.

"Do not react, Mara," Nora warned, catching the anger flashing in my eyes. "He is laying the groundwork for a lawsuit against the vehicle manufacturer, or setting up a scapegoat. You stay dead. You do not respond to his bait."

"Seven months ago, I logged into the Crossline corporate accounts," I said, forcing my voice to stay level. "I pulled thirty-seven ghost invoices from the server. Four point eight million dollars funneled directly into medical cold-chain logistics."

"Lila’s disaster relief organization," Nora stated.

"Exactly." I pushed away from the table and paced the length of the concrete wall. "Lila claimed she was shipping vaccines and emergency supplies to disaster zones. But the shipments never existed. She used the cold-chain receipts to wash the money clean."

"And you scanned every single one of those fake invoices onto the blue encrypted hard drive," Nora said. "You handed it to me."

"I secured the proof," I shot back. "Julian knows I found the missing millions. He knows I tracked the money to Lila."

A sharp, high-pitched beep suddenly cut through the safe room.

A red light flashed rapidly on Nora’s keyboard console.

Nora spun around and typed a fast sequence of commands. The police station feed vanished. A new video feed snapped onto the monitor. Night-vision surveillance footage.

"Where is this?" I asked, stepping closer to the screen.

"the city house I inherited from my mother," Nora answered. "The alarm just triggered."

Two figures moved through the dark foyer of my inherited house. The camera angle shifted, catching the moonlight spilling through the front windows. Julian and Ethan walked down the main hallway.

"They left the precinct," I noted, watching Julian pull a flashlight from his coat pocket. "They drove straight to the inherited city house."

"They are looking for your will," Nora said. She tapped a pen against her clipboard. "When you gave me the encrypted drive, I registered the hash on the federal server. The moment those files locked into our evidence vault, we placed this property under active surveillance."

"Julian doesn't care about the will," I argued, watching my husband kick open the door to the study. "He wants to know if I hid the original cold-chain invoices in the house. He needs to destroy the paper trail before the police start digging into my finances."

On the screen, Julian flipped the light switch. The hidden camera adjusted to the sudden brightness.

Julian tore into the room. He yanked the mahogany desk drawers open, dumping files and loose papers onto the Persian rug. He tossed a stack of old tax returns over his shoulder.

"Help me look," Julian barked at Ethan. "Check the bookshelves. Check behind the paintings."

Ethan stood in the doorway, his hands shoved deep into his Vale Academy blazer pockets. "Dad, we shouldn't be here. The police said they are dredging the river. What if they call us back?"

"Let them call," Julian snapped, ripping a leather-bound ledger in half. "We need to find her private lockbox. She keeps everything hoarded away like a paranoid lunatic."

I watched my son flinch at the harsh tone. Ethan stepped into the study, his eyes darting around the trashed room. He knelt near the floorboards, avoiding the mess his father was making.

"He is tearing your legacy apart," Nora observed quietly.

"Let him," I said. "The originals are already burned. There is nothing left in that room for him to find."

Ethan crouched lower. He ran his hand along the bottom edge of the heavy desk. His fingers caught on something hidden in the shadows. He tugged hard.

A rectangular cedar box slid across the hardwood floor.

"What is that?" Nora asked, leaning forward.

"Insurance," I whispered.

On the monitor, Ethan stared at the wooden container. He glanced over his shoulder. Julian was busy ripping the backing off a framed landscape painting, entirely focused on his frantic search.

Ethan turned back to the box. He popped the brass latch.

He lifted the lid.

Inside sat rows of crisp white envelopes. Exactly one hundred unmailed letters, stacked tightly together.

Ethan reached into the box. He bypassed the first ninety-nine envelopes, running his fingers all the way to the very back row. He pulled the final letter out of the cedar groove.

He held it up, tilting it toward the ceiling light. Heavy black ink stained the front of the paper.

"Only open after they tell you I am dead."
