Chapter 4

Chapter 4: The Residue

He appeared on the fifth day.

Not at the crossroads—at the front step of the cartography shop, in the early afternoon, sitting on the cracked stone with his elbows on his knees and one of her father's atlas volumes open in his lap. He had obtained it from somewhere. She'd locked the shop. She added can apparently bypass locked doors to the growing list of things she knew about him.

She stood in the doorway and looked at him for a moment before he looked up. He was reading—actually reading, with the focused attention of someone who had not yet gotten to the interesting part, which meant he found maps interesting enough to have a part he was working toward. This was inconvenient information for several reasons she declined to examine.

"You broke into my shop," she said.

"I was waiting outside. The atlas appeared." He looked up. His eyes were—the same as at the crossroads. She had been mildly hoping they would seem less remarkable in daylight. They didn't. "I didn't take it inside. The step seemed adequate."

She looked at the atlas in his lap. Volume seven: the northern provinces, her father's most recent work, the one with the most meticulous annotations. "That volume is irreplaceable."

"I'm aware. I'm being careful." He turned a page. "Your father marked uncertainty with a different ink from certainty. Most mapmakers don't do that."

"He thought it was dishonest not to."

"He was right." He looked at the page. "Most people prefer the certainty of a confident wrong answer to the accuracy of an uncertain right one."

She stood in the doorway a moment longer, and then she went to sit on the step beside him, which was a decision she made without quite making it—it simply happened, the way small decisions happen when you've stopped pretending you're going to make a different one.

"You have questions," he said. He didn't look up from the atlas.

"Several." She'd spent four days organizing them. "I want to understand the full mechanism. Before the second tear. Before—" She paused. "Before any of this goes further."

He set the atlas down on the step between them. He had, she noticed, placed it spine-up, which was the correct way to rest an open atlas if you wanted to preserve the binding. Another detail. She was collecting them the way she collected geographic data: one observation, then another, until the shape of the territory emerged.

"Ask," he said.

"The three tears. They're not just a price." She watched his face. "They're a test of quality. You're looking for grief with a specific property."

He didn't react with surprise. He'd told her to ask directly; she had. "Yes."

"The property being: grief that comes from complete understanding of the person being grieved."

"Yes."

"Which means you need me to understand you completely." She looked at the street, the ordinary November street, a woman with a bread basket, a boy chasing a dog. "The extended proximity. The emotional residue. You need me to spend enough time knowing you that when I grieve for you, the grief is—whole."

"Complete," he said. "Yes."

She looked at him. "And then what happens? If the third tear has the right quality?"

"It might break the curse." He said might with the flatness of three centuries of uncertain outcomes. "It's broken twice before, partially. Those tears were genuine. But the loop reasserted. I don't know if there's a configuration that breaks it permanently."

"You don't know."

"No." He looked at his hands. "I have a theory. The texts suggest that genuine grief freely given—not extracted from love, not the result of attachment becoming fatal—might collapse the mechanism from outside the loop rather than from within it." He paused. "But theories and three hundred years of practice are different things."

"And if it doesn't work," she said carefully. "If the third tear isn't the right quality, or the theory is wrong. What happens to me?"

The silence that followed had weight.

"If you don't love me," he said, "nothing happens to you."

"And if I do?"

He looked at her then, directly. Something moved across his face—not the managed neutrality of his Fate expression but something underneath it, a brief uncovering. "That's why I'm telling you," he said. "So you can choose to be careful."

She thought about Petra's word: exhausted. The specific exhaustion of something that had been going on too long, looking for a way to stop.

"The residue," she said. "Tell me what to expect."

"Emotional impressions. Not clear—you won't feel specific thoughts. More like—weather. The general climate of my experience." He paused. "Cold, mostly. Patience. The particular quality of isolation that comes from duration."

"Is there anything else?"

Something flickered across his face. "Occasionally," he said carefully, "something warmer. I'd recommend not focusing on it."

She noted this. Did not respond to it.

"One more question," she said. "The woman before. Maren."

He stilled.

"What was she like?"

The question clearly wasn't the one he'd expected. He looked at the atlas between them for a moment. "She was—a scholar," he said. "She came to me for knowledge, not rescue. She wanted to document the Fate mythos more accurately than the existing literature. She was—" He stopped. "She found everything genuinely interesting. She had a way of attending to things—maps, books, conversations—as though she believed they had something worth giving her." He paused again. "She was right, usually."

Isla absorbed this. "What did she want to know?"

"Everything." Something in his voice—buried, but present. "She asked better questions than anyone I'd encountered in three centuries. She asked what things felt like rather than what they were. She wanted to know what it was like to be old. What the world had been like before the kingdom. Whether I was lonely." He stopped.

"Were you?"

"I didn't know what to call it," he said. "Before her. I'd been alone for long enough that alone had stopped feeling like something that could be different." A beat. "She asked what I'd want, if I could want. I didn't have an answer." He turned the atlas page. "She died four days after I understood that I'd been trying to think of one."

The street continued its ordinary operations. The bread-woman was coming back with an empty basket.

"I'm sorry," Isla said.

He looked at her with the expression of someone who has not been told I'm sorry about a thing by anyone in a considerable amount of time and doesn't quite know what to do with it.

"You needn't—"

"I know I needn't," she said. "I'm saying it anyway."

He looked at the atlas. She looked at the street. The cold November afternoon proceeded around them, indifferent and unhurried, and neither of them spoke for a while, and the silence had the quality of something that had decided to be comfortable rather than merely empty.

The residue arrived properly on the seventh day.

She was in the back room, cataloguing a commission she'd taken for a merchant who needed a trade route mapped, and she became aware of something that wasn't hers. Not dramatically—not the way books described psychic experience, no sudden flood or overwhelming presence. More like: a room where the temperature has changed slightly, and you become aware of the change before you understand its source.

Cold. Patient. The particular solitude of something that has stopped expecting company.

She sat with it for a moment. Then she got a piece of paper and wrote:

Cold. Patient. Very alone. Tired in the specific way of duration, not sleeplessness. Something under those that I can't identify yet.

She folded the paper and put it in the atlas, where she kept her working notes.

Over the following week she added to it:

The cold isn't hostile. It's the temperature of a room that hasn't been used in a long time.

The patience isn't indifference. It's the patience of someone who has had to learn to be still or go mad from the waiting.

Today, briefly, something else. Warm. Specific. Gone before I could locate it.

She folded the paper again. She went back to the commission. She did not, with some deliberate effort, think too carefully about the fourth note.
