Chapter 13

Chapter 13: Cartography of a Silence

She did not go to the crossroads for eleven days.

The work continued—it always continued, that was what work was for, that was what her father had taught her, that the commissions required the application of attention regardless of whatever else was happening, that accuracy didn't take days off. She completed the trade route. She began a new commission: the canal district, for the city planning office, the streets and waterways of the part of Aravel she'd known since childhood.

Petra watched her the way Petra always watched her when she was processing something: without comment, without pressure, with the specific quality of someone who would speak when spoken to and meanwhile kept making tea and occasionally left a piece of bread on the desk.

"He told me," Isla said on the seventh day.

Petra looked up from her own work. "And?"

"He told me that the commission—Father's surveys—he commissioned them. And watched me afterward. And had been—preparing, in some sense. When I came to the crossroads."

Petra was quiet for a moment. "What does that mean to you?"

"I don't know yet." She looked at the canal district map. "It means the arrangement wasn't accidental. I was—identified. Watched. He knew what quality of grief I had before I showed up." She paused. "He told me the truth consistently when I asked. He gave me information that made it easier for me to walk away. He warned me, before it was in his interest to." She paused again. "Those things are still true."

"Yes," Petra said. "They are."

"But he structured the terms to lead me toward knowing him. The extended proximity, the residue, the vault—all of it was designed to produce the complete understanding he needed." She looked at the map. "He chose me and then shaped the conditions."

"Did he make you feel anything you didn't choose to feel?" Petra asked carefully.

Isla thought about this honestly. The residue—involuntary, yes, but he'd warned her about it. The vault—she'd asked to see it. The conversations—she'd driven most of them. The floor of the back room—she'd sat down first.

"No," she said.

"Did he lie to you?"

"No."

"Did he prevent you from leaving at any point?"

"No." She paused. "He gave me information that would have made leaving easier, several times."

Petra set down her pen. "What exactly are you angry about?"

Isla looked at the map.

"I'm angry," she said, "that I was a variable in an equation he'd been setting up for two years. I'm angry that he had context for me that I didn't have for myself." She paused. "I'm angry that the thing I thought was—" She stopped. "When I sat on the floor of the back room. When I thought: this person is choosing to be present. I thought it was choice from a level position. I didn't know he'd been calculating it for two years."

Petra was quiet.

"But—" Isla began.

"But?" Petra prompted.

"But I know him now. I've spent six weeks learning everything he's chosen not to tell anyone for three hundred years. And the thing I keep coming back to is: he warned me. He consistently, repeatedly, at cost to his own interests, warned me." She looked at the atlas. "A person who manipulates does not warn their mark."

"No," Petra agreed. "They don't."

"He's afraid," she said. "Not of me specifically. Of what happens when people see him completely and then die. He's been—" She stopped. "He's been trying to find a version of this that doesn't end in someone dying. For three hundred years." A pause. "And when he found someone he thought might be the right configuration, he was—careful. He gave her every piece of information he could. He structured the arrangement to make the choice real." She looked at the canal street map. "That's not the behavior of someone who wants to manipulate."

"What is it?" Petra asked.

Isla thought about it.

"It's the behavior," she said slowly, "of someone who is very afraid of doing the wrong thing and has decided that the best protection against that is honesty." She paused. "Consistent, comprehensive, often-inconvenient honesty."

"That does sound like him," Petra said.

Isla looked at her.

"You've met him twice," Isla said.

"I'm observant," Petra said. "Also you talk about him a great deal. You think you don't, but you do." She picked up her pen. "Go to the crossroads, Isla."

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because I want to understand what I actually feel before I go back. I don't want to go back when I'm still uncertain and have the uncertainty—misattributed." She looked at the map. "I need the map to be accurate before I try to navigate by it."

Petra looked at her for a moment with the eyes that were their mother's.

"You know he can feel it," Petra said. "When you're not there. He can feel—"

"I know."

"You're torturing him."

"I know," she said again, quietly.

She went back to the canal map. She worked until midnight. She filed her notes.

In the atlas, that night, she wrote one line:

The terms of the arrangement were structured deliberately. The understanding I've developed is still genuine. Both things are true. I need to decide what to do with that.

She looked at it for a long time.

Then she wrote, below:

He said he wanted to be in something rather than watching it. I believe him. I don't know yet what to do with believing him.

She closed the atlas.

She went to bed.

She did not, for the first time in eleven days, dream about the crossroads.
