Chapter 3

The isolation room's opulence mocked me as I paced its confines. Silk sheets, plush carpet—a gilded cage for a bird meant to fly. Three days had passed since the ceremony, three days of listening to Axel and Cleo celebrate their union above me.

I couldn't take it anymore.

In the back of the closet, behind a false panel, I found Cleo's stash—dried herbs with names I'd only read about in forbidden texts. Wolfsbane. Silverleaf. Dragon's Breath. All illegal in pack territory.

"Your secrets are my salvation," I whispered, gathering the herbs.

My hands trembled as I crushed the herbs together. The mixture smoked immediately, releasing a volatile compound that made my eyes water. Cleo's weaker body—the one I now inhabited—coughed violently, but I pressed on.

"I'm sorry, Cleo," I murmured, though I wasn't. "But I won't stay your prisoner."

I stuffed the mixture into the heavy velvet drapes and struck a match. The flame caught instantly, spreading up the fabric with alarming speed. Smoke filled the room, thick and choking.

"Fire!" I screamed, my voice hoarse from coughing. "Help me!"

The smoke detector wailed, sprinklers burst open, but the fire spread too quickly. Flames licked at the ceiling, consuming everything in their path. I stumbled to the door, pounding against it.

"Let me out!"

The heat was unbearable now. Cleo's body weakened faster than I expected, her lungs failing against the smoke. Darkness edged my vision as I collapsed to my knees.

Just as consciousness began to fade, the door exploded inward. Axel stood in the doorway, his Alpha aura pulsing with power and rage.

"What have you done?" he roared.

Strong arms lifted me from the floor. Through smoke-blurred vision, I saw Axel's face contorted with fury as he carried me out.

"Put me down," I gasped.

He didn't respond until we reached the corridor, then shook me violently. "What were you thinking? Do you have any idea what you've done?"

"Me?" I choked out. "You're the one who—"

"You damaged Cleo's vessel!" His eyes flashed dangerously. "Her body isn't strong like yours. If anything happens to her—to you—I'll make sure you never walk free again."

---

The infirmary smelled of antiseptic and fear. I lay strapped to a medical table, Dr. Elena Marsh hovering nearby with reluctance etched on her face.

"This is highly unethical," she argued with Axel. "A vitality transfer could kill her."

"She attacked herself," Axel snapped. "The Luna needs protection."

"Luna?" Dr. Marsh's eyebrows rose. "Alpha, I don't understand why you're calling this rogue—"

The door burst open. Cleo—wearing my face—stumbled in, dramatically clutching her eyes.

"The smoke," she sobbed, her performance flawless. "It damaged my eyes. I can barely see."

Axel rushed to her side. "What can we do?"

"There's only one way," Cleo whispered. "A vitality transfer. From the rogue to me."

Dr. Marsh shook her head. "That ritual is forbidden. It drains life force—"

"By Alpha command," Axel cut her off, "you will perform the ritual."

The doctor's shoulders slumped in defeat. She prepared the equipment with trembling hands—ancient machinery used only in the direst circumstances.

"Strap her down," Axel ordered, and guards secured my limbs.

The machine hummed to life, electrodes attaching to my temples and chest. Pain shot through me as it activated, sucking something essential from my core.

"Stop," I gasped, feeling my strength ebbing. "Please..."

But my pleas fell on deaf ears. The pain intensified, white-hot needles piercing my skull. Cleo smiled from across the room, drinking in my suffering.

"That's it," she murmured. "Give me your strength."

Something inside me cracked—not a bone, but something deeper. A mental block I hadn't known existed shattered like glass.

Heat flooded my veins, different from the fire's heat. This was ancient, primal—power surging through every cell.

My eyes burned silver. Not the amber of Axel's wolf, but a blinding, pure silver that illuminated the room.

"Impossible," Dr. Marsh gasped, stumbling back.

The machine shrieked and died as my aura flared outward, knocking guards and equipment flying. The restraints snapped like twigs.

"What is this?" Axel stared at me—at Cleo's body—with shock and something else. Fear.

I stood slowly, feeling the power coursing through me. Not a shift, not yet, but something more fundamental. An awakening.

"Alpha," I said, my voice layered with a tone that silenced the room instantly. "I demand a meeting with the Pack Council."

"Ella?" Axel whispered.

I smiled coldly. "By the ancient law of Soul Sovereignty," I continued, each word resonating with newfound authority, "I invoke my right to challenge this violation of my essence."

Dr. Marsh and the guards knelt instinctively, responding to an Alpha command they couldn't resist. Even Axel found himself lowering his gaze.

"What have you become?" he asked hoarsely.

I stepped toward him, silver light pulsing around me. "What I was always meant to be."
