Chapter 3

By Thursday, Morrow Tech was bleeding out.

Dana texted me at midnight. *Bank froze the credit line. Payroll bounces in six days. I'm sorry. I know it's not your problem.*

It wasn't my problem.

But on my kitchen counter sat a forty-page term sheet from Greyhaven Partners. Twelve million dollars in bridge financing. Signed by me two weeks before the engagement party. Funded by my father's people. Ready to wire the second I said the word.

It was supposed to be my wedding gift. Kai would never have known it came from me.

I was still staring at it when someone pounded on my apartment door.

"Sylvia. Open up. I know you're home."

Kai.

I opened the door halfway. He stood in the hallway in a wrinkled shirt, dark circles under his eyes. Celeste leaned against the wall behind him in a camel coat, scrolling through her phone like this was a dentist's waiting room.

"What do you want?"

"Can we come in?"

"No."

He pushed the door open anyway and walked past me. Celeste followed, wrinkling her nose at my secondhand couch.

"Cute," she said. "Very... grad student."

I shut the door hard. "You have two minutes."

Kai paced to my window and back. "You heard about the bank."

"Dana told me."

"Of course she did." He rubbed his face. "Okay. Here's the thing. Celeste's father is being difficult about the wire. Some compliance nonsense. His people want a co-investor before they release the funds. Somebody credible."

"And?"

"And you know people." He turned to face me. "The Halvorsen group. That fund in Boston. The family office in Greenwich that always took your calls. One introduction, Sylvia. You get them on the phone with Celeste, they sign on, Arden releases the sixty million, and we're saved."

I waited for the rest. The part where he said sorry.

It didn't come.

"Let me get this straight," I said slowly. "You humiliated me in front of three hundred people. You had me thrown out of your office. And now you want me to hand my contacts to the woman wearing my ring?"

Celeste glanced up from her phone. "Technically it's my ring now."

"Celeste." Kai shot her a look. Then he softened his voice at me, the way he used to when he wanted me to pick up the check. "Syl. Come on. This isn't about us anymore. Forty people work for me. You care about them, right? Dana? Marcus?"

"Don't." My voice came out low. "Don't use them on me."

"I'm not using anyone. I'm asking."

"You're not asking. You never ask. You just take."

His face flushed. "That's not fair."

"Isn't it?" I folded my arms. "Name one thing I did for you in five years. Just one. Anything you remember."

He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

Celeste laughed softly. "Babe, she's trying to guilt-trip you."

"I know what she's doing." Kai stepped closer, close enough that I could smell the cologne I'd bought him. "Listen to me. I know you're hurt. But if you ever really loved me, you won't destroy my career over a bad breakup."

The room went very quiet.

If you ever really loved me.

I'd skipped my grandmother's funeral to sit in a Denver hotel lobby for nine hours, waiting for a hospital board chair. I'd begged my father, the man I'd sworn never to need, to rescue a stranger's payroll. I'd lied to Kai every single day so he could feel proud of himself.

And he'd never seen any of it. Not once.

He didn't want someone who loved him. He wanted a faucet.

Something in my chest went still. Cold and clean, like snow on a window.

"You're right," I said.

Kai's shoulders dropped in relief. "Thank you. I knew you'd—"

"I'm not going to destroy your career." I picked up my phone. "You already did that yourself."

I dialed. Put it on speaker.

A man answered on the first ring. "Greyhaven Partners, Owen Riggs speaking."

"Owen. It's Sylvia."

His tone changed instantly. "Ms. Voss. Good evening."

Kai frowned. "Ms. *what*?"

"The Morrow Tech bridge facility," I said. "The twelve million. I'm withdrawing it. Effective tonight."

A pause. "Understood. Consider it done."

Celeste lowered her phone. "What bridge facility?"

I didn't look at her. "And Owen, I want the rest pulled too. The Halvorsen contract renewal. The Lumen district referral. The seed fund's stake from year two. Every channel we opened for them. Close it all."

"All of it, Ms. Voss?"

"All of it."

"I'll have legal send formal notice by morning."

"Thank you." I hung up.

Kai stared at me like I'd grown a second head. For three full seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he laughed. A short, ugly bark.

"Wow. That's good. Who was that, your cousin? Your roommate from college?" He clapped twice. "Very dramatic. Did you practice that?"

"Check your email in the morning, Kai."

"Greyhaven." Celeste's voice had gone thin. "Greyhaven was our first investor. Kai, that's... that's the fund that saved you in year two."

"It's a coincidence." But his eyes flicked to me, and for the first time, I saw a crack.

I walked to my closet and pulled out the suitcase I'd packed that afternoon.

"What are you doing?" Kai demanded.

"Leaving."

"Leaving *where*?"

"Somewhere you're not."

He followed me to the door, his voice rising. "You think you can just walk out? You have no job, Sylvia. No money. No family worth mentioning. You'll last a month. Two, tops."

I zipped my coat.

"And when you come crawling back," he said, "don't expect me to pick up."

I paused with my hand on the doorknob. I almost felt sorry for him.

"Lock up when you leave," I said. "The landlord's coming Monday."

---

The car was waiting downstairs. Black, with tinted windows. The driver held the door and didn't say a word.

Forty minutes later, I climbed the steps of a white Gulfstream at a private airfield outside the city. The tail bore a silver letter V.

The flight attendant took my suitcase. "Welcome home, Miss Voss."

Home.

I sank into a leather seat by the window. The city lights stretched out below, small and blinking, like they'd never mattered.

I dialed the number I'd ignored for five years.

He picked up before the first ring finished.

"Sylvia." My father's voice, deep and careful. "Are you all right?"

"Dad." I watched the runway lights start to slide past. "I'm done playing this game."

Silence on the line. Then, quietly: "Say it."

"I'm coming back. I'm taking over Voss Holdings."

He exhaled, almost like a laugh.

"Then you should know something before you land," he said. "Celeste Arden's father called me an hour ago."

My grip on the phone tightened.

"He's asking for a loan," my father said. "Sixty million dollars."
