Chapter 1

I, Wesley Roberts, was the adopted son of the Adams family, and my heart was only devoted to my sister, Kayla Adams.

Everyone said she would protect me forever.

But after Kayla planned to marry the eldest son of the Wood family, Max Wood, everything had changed.

Kayla personally sent me to an asylum.

"Behave well, and I'll pick you up when you stop biting people like a mad dog!"

A year later, I jumped off a building at her wedding.

But she cried and begged me, "Wesley, please don't leave me, okay?"

-1

The sunlight shone through the window of the asylum and fell on Kayla's side face, making her seem both familiar and strange to me.

My nose couldn't help but feel sore.

After my parents were murdered, it was Kayla who took me back to the Adams family and raised me.

She was the person I trusted most in this world.

But now, she sent me to hell in person.

Now, she was finally coming to take me home.

The director of the asylum, Ethan Peterson, approached me when my Kayla was dealing with the procedures and threatened me in a fierce voice, "Wesley, you should know what you can say to her. If you dare to talk nonsense about this asylum, those wonderful videos will be sent to Kayla. When you are sent back here, you will stay for more than a year."

The chill hit my spine, and I nodded desperately in agreement. "I know."

Seeing my cooperation, he looked satisfied.

Then, he packed my things and handed them to Kayla.

She gladly took it and didn't notice at all that I was wearing a fleece sweatshirt in such a hot summer.

I didn't understand why I still felt cold when I had put on so many clothes.

I couldn't help but stay close to Kayla like I did in my childhood.

My family and the Adams family were old friends.

But when I was eight years old, my parents committed suicide out of fear of punishment for embezzling company funds.

Since then, I had often been bullied by rich kids at school.

It was my sixteen-year-old sister who used her weak body to protect me. "It's his parents' fault, not his. You have to stop doing that!"

Since that day, she had become my light.

"Wesley, come home with me!" she said.

Her words made me so warm.

But now, eight years had passed.

Just when I thought I could feel the warmth again, she ruthlessly pushed me away.

When I looked at her again, I could only see Kayla's disdainful and cold eyes.

She said, "It seems that you haven't recovered from your illness yet. You're still so disgusting!"

I was stunned.

How could I forget that again?

She was no longer the Kayla who trusted me unconditionally.

She hated me because I killed her father, her only relative in this world, Ryan Adams.

A year ago, Ryan was in a car accident.

And Kayla's fiancé Max told her, "Wesley hired someone to kidnap him in order to get your attention, but Ryan didn't know the truth and ran a red light to save him, which led to the car accident."

That day, I shuttled my broken legs and kept explaining at her feet. "It's not me. I didn't do that."

But she didn't listen to my explanation but slapped me in the face.

"Wesley, I can't believe you can do such a childish thing. Why didn't they kill you but only break your legs! Why did you have to sacrifice my father's life because of your ignorance? You are the one who deserves to die. Go to hell!"

That day, her eyes were scarlet.

If possible, she would like to kill me with her own hands to avenge Ryan.

Max stopped her in time. "Wesley didn't want this, either. He didn't expect that Ryan would risk his life for him."

This undoubtedly further aroused Kayla's anger.

"Over the years, my father has always treated him as his own son. Do you even have the slightest conscience?" she said.

Since then, Kayla no longer went home. She turned her sadness into motivation and devoted herself to working so hard that Max couldn't do anything about it.

Seeing that Kayla ignored him, he began to target me. "Wesley is such a rebellious kid. Let me help you take care of him."

Kayla agreed.

My nightmare officially began from this moment on.

-2

Kayla's rejection made me afraid to approach her.

I just kept my distance and followed her behind.

She didn't say a word when picking me up back home.

When we arrived at the underground parking lot, the darkness almost suffocated me.

Kayla used to hold my hand and comfort me, telling me not to be afraid and that she would always be there.

But it would never happen again.

I endured the fear thoughtfully and said nothing.

According to Max, I was sick.

At the beginning, he just picked me up from school every day.

But he didn't just pick me up.

He always intentionally talked to my classmates around me.

He said, "Wesley had a fight with his sister. He may be in a bad mood recently. You should take good care of him.

"Yeah, it's been so long, and they still haven't reconciled.

"Why do you think Ryan's death has something to do with him? Don't talk about it, okay?"

Although Max firmly defended me, my classmates looked at me in an increasingly weird way.

I remained silent, firmly believing that my innocence would justify me.

But I ignored the power of rumors.

Soon, my class teacher called me to his office. "The rumors about you are getting more and more intense around school. Although I believe you're innocent, it can't help solve the problem. We are also aware of your situation. Tell your sister to come here and have a conversation with me."

I didn't feel ashamed in that situation.

On the contrary, I expected it because I hadn't seen Kayla for almost a month. Now, I finally had a reason to see her.

I was anxious yet expectant.

"Kayla... My teacher asked you to come to school. Can you come here?" I asked.

Her voice on the other end paused, then became a little impatient.

"Isn't Max in charge of picking you up from school now? Tell him," she said.

Fearing Kayla would hang up the phone, I immediately said, "But he insisted on talking to you."

I lied. It was the first time I lied to Kayla.

I scratched my scabbed wound nervously and couldn't feel any pain even when it was broken again.

Finally, she signed and compromised. "Okay."

Kayla was a stunner.

As soon as she appeared at my school, everyone couldn't help focusing on her.

I sat at my class teacher's desk early, waiting.

"Kayla!"

But the next second, I felt as if I was falling into an ice cave.

Max was with her. "Wesley, why bother your sister for such a small matter? I can do it for her."

I glanced at my Kayla and lowered my head guiltily because of the previous lie.

Then, my class teacher told her all the rumors about our family around the school and asked her whether they were true.

"No, it's..."

Just as Kayla was about to speak, Max interrupted her with a wail. "Kayla, I'm sorry. I didn't discipline Wesley well, and that's why he caused your loss."

Kayla, who was calm at first, was irritated instantly.

I wanted to retort, but it was too late.

Now, some students with tattoos rushed into the teacher's office.

"We're here to admit our mistakes. We shouldn't have lied to Wesley's sister that he was kidnapped because of money," they said.

But they lied; I didn't ask them to do such things.

Then, I began to strike back like a crazy man. "You are lying. I didn't do that! Kayla, trust me. You know me. I won't do such a thing."

More and more students gathered around and started judging me.

"So, Wesley did kill his stepfather!"

"What a shameless boy. Did he forget how carefully the Adams family raised him?"

I was on the verge of a mental breakdown. "Kayla, you believe me, right? Please tell me that you believe me... Kayla... Please..."

In the end, I still didn't get a response from her.

Maybe her silence showed everything.

Kayla abandoned me.

I became the sinner whom everyone could bully and despise.

However, a paper tissue appeared in my sight.

"Wesley, I believe you, so wipe your tears."

I looked up and seemed to see Kayla the first time we met each other.

She moved, and Kayla in my fantasy disappeared. Then, I saw a girl in plain clothes but looking pure.

I should have seen her.

But there was no time to think about it.

Kayla called to urge me to come back home now.

I thought she was finally willing to believe me.

But when I got home, Max showed Kayla my diagnosis of paranoia.

I couldn't hold back anger any longer and punched him in the face.

"It was you. You spread the rumors in school. I'm not sick. You did these to me!"

When I wanted to throw a second punch, Kayla stood in front of him. "That's enough! What do you want to do? Tear the family apart?"

Suddenly, her tone softened, like when she coaxed me when I was a child.

"Good boy. Wesley, let's go to the hospital, okay?"

But I wasn't sick at all.

I begged Kayla not to send me to the hospital.

Since I refused to compromise with a strong attitude, she just told the servant to lock me in a room instead of throwing me into an asylum to torture me.

"Don't let him out without my permission," she commanded.

-3

Kayla finally took me home from the asylum.

"Go to your room and get a rest," she said.

I shook my head subconsciously.

That room was the biggest nightmare in my life.

I felt suffocated whenever I got close to it.

Ignoring my resistance, Kayla said calmly, "It's up to you. You can pick the one you like."

I looked around the house that used to be so familiar to me and felt at loss.

Finally, I stopped at the door of Ryan's room and couldn't help holding my tears anymore.

Kayla somehow came behind me and handed me a tissue.

"How dare you cry in front of his room? If it weren't you, he would have lived a happy life now! Stop your hypocritical tears!" she said.

I thought, "Kayla, I want dad to be alive more than anyone else.

If he's still alive, he can tell you that I didn't deliberately find someone to kidnap me just to attract your attention.

I was really kidnapped."

I did call dad for help, but he didn't answer my call.

Then, we heard of his death.

But Ethan told me to obey whatever you said if I wanted to reduce your hatred towards me. I should just let you unleash the bad feelings. The truth didn't matter at all.

Kayla was the most important person to me.

It was okay to be misunderstood by her as long as she was willing to accept me.

After all, I was hollow now.

The only heartbeat I had was for Kayla.

A year ago, after she locked me in my room, Max visited me with those punks who perjure themselves against me.

Only then did I realize that he framed me from the beginning.

I wanted to kill him.

But they were outnumbered.

They suppressed me tightly.

Max slapped me and shouted, "You want to be a man, huh? Get up and hit me.

"It's all your fault. Kayla doesn't want to marry me!

"Let's see how you can compete with me when she abandons you!"

Then, Max was tired from hitting me.

Those punks peed on me.

But they didn't think it was enough.

He stepped hard on my broken bones that had not yet healed, and the sound of fractured bones echoed throughout the room.

They also cut some places on my body that were not normally visible.

What completely drove me crazy was they drugged me and took humiliating pictures.

"You now look like a whore!" they laughed at me.

Since then, I had been actually sick.

My mind became more and more foggy, and I even thought about committing suicide.

Every time I almost lost the hope of living, I thought of Kayla.

If I died, the last family member she had would vanish.

How was she supposed to live alone?

I couldn't end my life.

So, I propped up my miserable body and called her, "Kayla... Max brought some people to harm me, he..."

However, Kayla went silent for a moment. "Wesley, your illness is far beyond my expectations. Max has taken photos of you hurting yourself and told me that you thought he did this to you. He has already found you an asylum. I will tell someone to pick you up later."

Before I could explain, she hung up the phone.

I sent a message to tell her about what that scumbag did to me.

Still, there was no response from Kayla.

I knew I had lost my last chance; Kayla wouldn't believe me.

Max would always win by striking first.

At that moment, my heart and body were all shattered.

I cooperated, packed my things, and walked into the asylum.

I didn't see my sister show up even though the gate of this horrible place was shut.

-4

Back home, I finally chose the room farthest away from Kayla's.

She probably didn't want to see me.

In the past, she arranged my room the closest to hers on purpose.

She said, "I will never leave you alone."

She said, "You're my favorite, Wesley."

She said, "I won't let anyone bully you, Wesley."

But now, she abandoned me, hated me, and left me with those scumbags for fun.

The doorbell brought me back to my senses.

Kayla went to open the door.

It was Max who brought some food here.

"Kayla, to celebrate Wesley's discharge from the hospital, I will cook for him myself today."

At the dinner table, faced with all the dishes that were too spicy for me, I didn't eat at all.

Kayla looked sympathetic to me when I had no idea what to eat.

Then, she stuffed a spicy taco into my plate indifferently.

I put it back on her plate.

I used to like spicy food the most, and so did Kayla.

When we were kids, we always competed on who could eat the spiciest food but always screamed because of the hell-like taste. However, never did we surrender first.

During my year in the asylum, I didn't eat a single normal meal.

Dead rats, cockroaches, needles and shards of glass could often appear in my food.

I no longer dared to eat the food they sent me.

In order to prevent me from dying, Ethan would often stuff the rotten food into my throat and inject me with a nutrient solution.

But he also completely destroyed my stomach, and I could only drink soup.

Kayla looked incredulous and irritated. "Eat it, or get out of my house!"

Max smiled and tried to ease the vibe. Then, he brought that spicy taco back to my plate and gave me some more spicy food.

"Wesley, Kayla is your sister. Try to be more mature and stop being so mad at her, okay? These are your favorite foods. Kayla told me to buy them for you. Give them a try!"

I saw the fork licked by him stirring in the dishes and my plate and couldn't help feeling nauseous and started to vomit.

My behavior inflamed my sister. "Wesley! Can you stop acting like that? Do you think we're abusing you?"

Meanwhile, Max looked artificially sorrowful and blamed me, "Wesley, I know I'm not a good cook, but do you really have to insult me like that?"

Kayla looked at me coldly. "You're a man. Can you be like a man?"

Enduring the pain in my abdomen, I started to engulf all the dishes that hurt my body.

She was stunned for a few seconds, then started to sneer again. "Our education of courtesy and decency has all been in vain. Don't eat like a country boy!"

My heart skipped a beat.

Country boy...

I remembered when I was ten years old, Kayla and I went back to the countryside to visit our grandparents, and we met many countryside children there.

At that time, she did not mind the mud on their bodies and washed the dust off for them with her own hands with an oath.

"When I grow up, I will definitely set up a fund to help these children," she said.

But now, Kayla had forgotten her commitment, and her ambition of expanding her business empire grew bigger and bigger.

When did it start?

It probably started with the crisis of the Adams Group.

It also led to her engagement with Max.

At that time, the Adams Group endeavored to obtain a big project, but it turned out to be a trap that would bring the whole company down. At the critical moment, Kayla took over the company from the desperate Ryan.

But just before the Adams Group was about to go bankrupt, the Wood Group issued an official announcement that the Wood Group would financially help the Adams Group through the marriage between their heirs.

Before that, Max had been pursuing Kayla but ended in failure every time.

I knew she didn't like him at all.

"Kayla, wait for me. When I grow up a little bit, I can help you manage the company. Together, we can make the company bigger and stronger!" I said at that time.

Kayla looked at me tenderly with a smile on her face. "Okay! I believe you."

-5

When I came back to reality from my memory, Kayla slapped me and knocked over my plate.

"You don't want to eat it, right? Then starve!"

My face was burning.

But I felt relieved because I didn't have to eat those spicy foods anymore.

Even the things we once loved would become annoying, just like Kayla to me.

However, Max protected me from her scolding and thoughtfully appeased her.

"Calm down, Kayla. Wesley is still too young and reckless. I believe Ryan doesn't want to see you fight."

After saying that, he pulled me away regardless of the angry Kayla.

This was another of Max's usual tactics. He believed my disappearance would drive the idea that Kayla believed I killed Ryan.

Max pulled me to my original room.

As soon as he entered the room, he stopped pretending to be a gentleman and kicked my belly.

"Wesley, you see? Whenever I stir up trouble, Kayla will doubt and hate you."

I rolled on the ground in pain.

"Max, don't worry, I won't compete with you for her anymore, and so won't Noah."

Max lifted me up with my collar and fiercely said, "Why did you say that name? You mention this name to Kayla, and I will kill you."

Noah Mitchell was Kayla's first boyfriend and also the reason she rejected Max so many times in the past.

He was very good to me and even better to her.

Unfortunately, he was killed in a plane crash when he went abroad for further education.

I could still remember how peaceful Kayla was when she received that news.

Her heart was about to be shattered into pieces.

Max hated me because, as her stepbrother, I could still win her heart. As for Noah, he would even want to kill him again even though he was already dead.

To him, Noah was someone he could never win.

I apologized to Noah's ghost that I still had to implicate him in this mess after he died.

Looking at Max's distorted face, I smiled viciously.

I knew he was suppressing the anger in his chest.

He pinched my neck.

"What are you laughing at? Are you laughing at the fact she doesn't love me at all? Wesley, you are really too naughty. You have to pay the price for your behavior."

Then, he smashed the mirror and cut his hand hard with the shards.

When he had done this, he threw the fragment, stained with his blood, at my feet.

Max cried out in horror when he saw the blood gushing out from his hand. "Kayla, Wesley attacked me. He tried to kill me!"

When Kayla rushed to us, he had already fainted due to excessive blood loss.

Glaring at me, she called an ambulance before scolding me.

I followed her to the ambulance, hesitating whether or not to explain.

But Ethan's suggestion lingered in my mind, and I kept my mouth shut.

Along the way, Kayla looked at me with disgust.

"Wesley, I didn't expect you to be so crazy that you dared to kill someone. I have been convincing myself that my father's death was an accident. I can't blame you for your young age. But I didn't expect that you wouldn't deserve it at all. You are born to be a jinx! I really regret bringing you back! You should have died in that fire with your parents!"

Kayla regretted bringing me home and having a brother like me.

My hands were shaking and tears were falling uncontrollably.

For the last time, I defended myself. "Kayla, it wasn't me. Max cut himself. He just wanted to frame me."

Kayla looked sarcastic. "You're so bad at lying. No one would frame someone else with his life!"

I was so panicked that I blurted out something very improper at that moment. "But he really can do such a thing. Have you forgotten that he framed Noah in order to..."

As soon as Noah's name was mentioned, Kayla and I were both stunned.

When she was in college, she went to the beach for a barbecue with some friends, including Max and me.

Although he was not invited, Max insisted on joining us, and Kayla took me with her.

That day, in order to frame Noah, Max jumped into the sea. After being rescued, he immediately falsely accused Noah of pushing him into the sea.

Fortunately, everyone believed in Noah and insisted on checking the surveillance camera and questioning many witnesses.

It proved that Max jumped into the sea by himself, and he could swim. He just cramped and almost ended up accidentally killing himself.

For a long while, Kayla didn't say anything.

I immediately regretted exposing Kayla's scars but felt glad that she seemed to realize that Max would achieve his goal by doing whatever it was.

And so, we all remained silent and deadlocked.
