Chapter 3

The heavy double doors of the Moonridge grand ballroom swung open, and the warmth of a thousand conversations spilled into the foyer.

I walked through the entryway alone.

There was no motorcade lined up behind me, no diamond necklace draped across my collarbones, and no private security detail clearing a path. I wore the same simple black column dress I had chosen in my downtown office, carrying only a small clutch.

As I crossed the threshold, the laughter around the nearest high-top tables quieted.

Whispers rippled outward like a wave. Eyes swept over me from head to toe, cataloging the lack of flashing brand logos, the lack of an entourage, and the lack of an Alpha on my arm.

To the Silver Moon elite, my solitary entrance was all the proof they needed.

"Well, look who finally arrived," Bianca’s voice cut through the background hum of the string quartet.

She glided across the polished marble floor, champagne flute in hand, her shimmering champagne gown trailing behind her. A half-dozen pack socialites followed closely in her wake, their eyes gleaming with malicious amusement.

Bianca stopped inches from me, reaching out a manicured hand to pinch the clean fabric of my left sleeve between two fingers.

"Clean lines, I suppose," Bianca said, her voice dripping with mock sympathy. "Did you rent it for the night, Avery? Or did you borrow it from an old friend who actually had an invitation to our gala?"

A low chuckle spread through the circle of guests gathered around us.

Before I could answer, Derek stepped forward from the VIP circle, parting the crowd with the effortless authority of an Alpha. His tailored tuxedo fit his broad frame perfectly, but his jaw was set with tight, patronizing irritation.

He looked down at me, shaking his head.

"You didn't have to humiliate yourself like this, Avery," Derek said, his voice dropping into the familiar, charitable tone he used whenever he wanted to appear generous in front of pack elders.

"Is that right?" I asked calmly.

"You're making a scene because your pride is hurt," Derek said, crossing his arms. "I get it. Five years ago didn't go the way you planned. But if you just admit that leaving Silver Moon was a mistake because you couldn't make it on your own, I'll have the organizers pull down the betting pool right now. You can take your coat and walk out with whatever dignity you have left."

Several pack council members nodded in solemn approval behind him, murmuring about how merciful their Alpha was being to a wandering Omega.

I looked Derek dead in the eye. "I didn't come here to ask for your mercy, Derek."

Bianca let out a bright, sharp laugh. "Of course not. She came here to sit at the table she couldn't afford."

Bianca turned on her heel and signaled to a banquet server.

She picked up the engraved silver donation box from the display pedestal and set it down with a sharp clang on the linen right in front of my designated seat. Beside it, she placed the dented, scratched metal scholarship badge Derek’s father had handed me nearly a decade ago.

"Some things never change," Bianca said, projecting her voice so the surrounding tables could hear every syllable. "We know you wagered half a million dollars online just to save face, Avery. But dinner seats in the donor tier are twenty-five thousand dollars. Since we all know you don't have that kind of liquidity, we set up a little collection for you. Every dollar dropped in this box goes toward keeping you fed tonight."

Laughter rippled across the room. Several young pack heirs reached into their wallets, pulling out crumpled one-dollar bills and tossing them mockingly toward the silver box.

I didn't touch the box. I didn't reach for the tarnished badge.

Instead, I looked at the center of the table, where a gilded stand displayed the public QR code for the Moonridge Founders' Charity Fund. The system was linked directly to the giant digital board suspended above the main stage, tracking tonight's fundraising total in real time.

I pulled my personal phone from my clutch.

I unlocked the screen, opened the Lunaris Treasury mobile portal, and scanned the event's code.

With three taps, I routed an immediate private wire from my primary holding account into the Moonridge fund. In the memo line, I typed two words.

I pressed transfer.

For a second, nothing happened. Bianca opened her mouth to deliver another rehearsed jab, her lips parting with a smug smile.

Then, an electronic chime echoed through the entire ballroom speakers.

The giant screen on stage flashed bright gold. The live total, which had been crawling along at four hundred thousand dollars, suddenly jumped with a massive spike.

**[NEW DONATION: $500,000.00]**

**[DONOR: AVERY LANE]**

**[MEMO: OMEGA INDEPENDENCE]**

The digital board updated the leaderboard instantly, placing my name at the very top of the donor tier in bold, luminous letters.

The entire ballroom went dead silent.

The laughter vanished. Glasses froze halfway to people's mouths. The council elders stared up at the glowing numbers, their expressions slack with absolute disbelief.

Bianca’s smile shattered. The color drained from her cheeks as she stared at the screen, then down at the phone still resting lightly in my palm.

"That's... that's impossible," Bianca stammered, her voice losing its polished composure. She snapped her head toward the crowd, looking for support. "This is a stunt! She took out a predatory loan just to pull off a fake wire! Or worse—she's skimming company money from whatever low-level corporate boss she works for!"

She stepped into my space, her eyes wide with frantic suspicion. "Where did you get five hundred thousand dollars, Avery? Tell everyone! Whose money are you spending?"

Derek took a step forward, his Alpha presence flaring with genuine anger. His brows drew together, his gaze boring into mine with sharp intensity.

"Who are you working for, Avery?" Derek demanded, his voice low and hard. "Who authorized you to throw half a million dollars around in my territory? What firm backed this transfer?"

I looked at him, completely unmoved by the weight of his voice.

Five years ago, that tone would have made me shrink into the shadows. Five years ago, I would have scrambled to explain myself, desperate to prove that I wasn't the burden he made me out to be.

Now, his anger was just noise in an empty room.

I reached down to the linen table.

My fingers closed around the battered metal scholarship badge Bianca had laid out to mock me. I held it up to the light for a single second, looking at the tarnished silver finish, then let it drop lightly onto the plate directly in front of Bianca.

It landed with a dull, hollow click.

"Keep it," I said evenly. "You seem far more attached to my poverty than I am."

Bianca flinched as if I had struck her across the face.

Derek opened his mouth, reaching to grab my wrist, but before he could close the distance, the heavy side doors of the ballroom burst open.

Raymond Miller, the general manager of Moonridge Resort, strode rapidly into the hall. He was carrying a thick, leather-bound portfolio under his arm, his expression pale and urgent as he scanned the room.

Derek caught sight of him and immediately pulled back, straightening the lapels of his tuxedo. A look of relief washed over Derek's face.

"Raymond," Derek called out, stepping toward the aisle to intercept the manager. "Perfect timing. Bring the restructuring portfolio over here. We'll sign the debt extension papers in my private study before the dinner starts—"

Miller didn't even slow his pace.

He walked straight past Derek's outstretched hand, brushing past the Alpha as if Derek were nothing more than a piece of decorative furniture.

Derek froze mid-stride, his hand suspended awkwardly in the air.

Miller hurried past the VIP tables, past the frozen crowd, and stopped directly in front of me.

In full view of the entire pack council, the investors, and the silent ballroom, the veteran manager bowed his head with deep, unmistakable deference.

"Ms. Lane," Miller said, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. "The acquisition team is waiting for you upstairs."

Derek turned around, his eyes wild with sudden shock, the blood completely draining from his face.

I picked up my clutch from the table and smoothed the front of my dress.

"Good," I said calmly, looking past Derek toward the private elevators. "Let’s discuss what Moonridge is actually worth."
