No Second Chances for an Unfaithful Alpha

Nora POV

The sterile scent of the Pack Hospital filled the air as I sat on the examination table, my hand resting protectively over my swollen belly waiting for my checkup. At six moons pregnant, my growing pup was the only thing that gave me joy and the sunlight in my relationship with my mate, Ryker – Alpha of Silvermoon Pack.

“Nora!” Ryker’s voice broke into my thoughts. He was standing at the door with a tense shoulder as if he didn’t want to be there. “An urgent pack matter just came up and I need to attend to it. I’ll need to leave now.”

“Now?” my eyes widened with surprise. “Please, Ryker,” I pleaded hating the desperation in my voice. “Can’t it wait? The Healer would soon come, remember this is our pup’s check-up.”

He gritted his teeth in annoyance. “You’re strong enough to handle this on your own, Nora. After all, you’re the Luna of Silvermoon Pack. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

Before I could protest further, he was gone.

Dr. Irene, the pack’s healer, entered moments later. Her kind eyes crinkled with concern when she noticed Ryker’s absence but she didn’t say anything. Rather she smiled.

“Shall we begin, Luna Nora?”

I nodded forcing a smile. The check-up was going smoothly until a loud shout filled the air making Dr. Irene pause.

“Rogues!” someone howled “The hospital is under attack!”

My instincts kicked in as I jumped off the examination table. Dr Irene – who had been preparing to leave – froze for a second, wide-eyed before she came alive.

“Get the Luna to safety,” she barked to the other Healers and nurses in the room with her.

Two healers rushed to my side but I shook them off. “I can fight,” I snapped glaring at them. “Just because I am pregnant doesn’t mean I’ll sit by and watch while everyone is under attack. Hurry, reach out to the warriors, I’ll try to call the Alpha.”

I tried to mindlink Ryker but he didn’t respond. I gazed around the room, searching for a weapon. Finally, I settled on scissors and slowly moved to the door of the ward with the rest of the Healers and nurses surrounding me.

We moved slowly and cautiously hearing screams coming from every part of the hospital. Suddenly, a rogue jumped in front of us, his eyes wild with hunger. I reacted on instinct, dodging his first strike and delivering a swift blow with my scissors to his chest.

Another rogue jumped from the side but I was too slow. Almost when I was sure it had me, a warrior suddenly stepped in between us, and in one blow sent the rogue sprawling across the floor.

“Quick, take the Luna to the safe room. We’ll handle this.”

“No!” I insisted “I must stay and fight. Has anyone called the Alpha?” I asked.

“He’s not responding to our mindlinks or phone calls. But we need to get you out of here, Luna.”

More rogues poured in, filling the floor. I realized I was no match for them and if I stayed here, I would distract the warriors fighting. Agreeing, I followed one of the warriors and two Healers down the corridor, moving stealthily.

Suddenly two rogues lunged at the warrior in front attacking him at once. I twirled, throwing the scissors at one of the rogues, aiming for the neck. But as I tried to recover, a rogue suddenly grabbed my leg making me crash to the floor.

Pain shot through my belly I clutched it and tried to fight but the rogue was already dragging me down the hallway.

Mustering all the strength I had, I grabbed at a gurney lying in the corridor and hit the rogue. It snarled and lunged at me but one of the healers was faster and delivered a blow that sent it skidding the floor.

The room began to spin. I heard the healer’s voice urging me to stay with her. And then, silence.

Dr. Irene a few of the nurses I recognize from earlier surrounded me.

“I’m sorry, Luna Nora,” Dr. Irene’s voice was filled with sadness “You fell so hard on your stomach. We…we couldn’t save the pup and you’re lucky to have survived.”

The words hit me like a blow, I curled myself into a ball, unable to cry. I was pregnant moments ago. Where was Ryker? Why wasn’t he here yet?

Hours later, numb and still grieving inside, I was cleared to return home.

As I entered the pack house, my phone buzzed with a notification from my social media feed. Scarlett, Ryker’s childhood sweetheart who had just returned to the pack a year ago, had posted a new photo and had tagged Ryker.

My heart stopped when I saw it. Both of them had their arms around each other, smiling broadly at the camera with a caption under the photo that read:

“Nothing like a surprise visit from My Alpha to cheer a girl up. Alpha Ryk… you’re the best. #BFFgoalforever”.

The timestamp on the photo was the exact time of my appointment and the attack at the hospital.

At that moment, something inside me shattered. Not my heart – no, that had been breaking slowly for moons. This was different. It felt like the last thread of my bond with Ryker, my trust in him as my mate and Alpha, had finally snapped.

I sank to the floor, my back against the cold wall of the pack house. How long had this been going on? How many times had Ryker lied to me, chosen Scarlett over me… over our pup?

I turned off my phone, I was not going to bother him anyway. There was no point. I took the medicine given to me at the hospital and laid down, exhausted then drifted to sleep.

 In the middle of the night, Ryker finally returned and I stirred when he opened the door.

“How did it go?” he asked me, his hand reaching to stroke my head.

I caught a whiff of Scarlett’s scent on him and jerked my head away.

“Just fine!” I lied, forcing a smile. “Everything is fine.”

He nodded. “Sorry, the meeting took longer than usual. You know how pack business has been lately. I’m sorry, I couldn’t come back. I heard the hospital was attacked. Thank the goddess you’re fine.”

Instead of calling out his blatant lie, I rolled over, presenting my back to him. “Remember to turn off the lights before bed. Good night!” I said coldly.

I was tired of his endless deceit.
