I Returned as the Nanny to the Daughter They Stole From Me

Seven hours after giving birth, her daughter was taken. Forged papers, buried records, and a powerful family ensured the world believed the baby was gone. For five years she searched, until a photograph of six-year-old Lily Blackwood revealed the truth: the child was alive, and she was hers. Now she works inside Blackwood Manor as Lily's nanny, close enough to hold her hand and hear her sing a lullaby only a mother could know. Damian Blackwood is cold and watchful, yet he lets her stay. As she uncovers locked rooms and dangerous secrets, she realizes someone will do anything to keep her from reclaiming her daughter.

Chapter 3

Mrs. Hayes closed the bedroom door behind me, and for several seconds I simply stood there, Lily's voice staying with me, quiet but impossible to forget.

Don't disappear.

I looked around the room again. It was small but spotless, with a single bed against the wall, a narrow wardrobe beside it, and a window overlooking the quiet gardens behind the manor. Everything about the room was practical, a staff room designed for someone who worked in the house rather than someone who belonged in it.

Mrs. Hayes had remained in the doorway long enough to explain the rules.

"Breakfast is at seven. Miss Lily wakes at six-thirty, and her daily routine is on the desk. Mr. Blackwood takes his meals separately and doesn't like interruptions during working hours."

"Understood."

"You'll report directly to me."

"Of course."

She nodded before adding, "The previous four nannies found this position difficult."

I almost smiled. "I'm not easily discouraged."

For a moment something crossed her face - not amusement or doubt but concern, and although it disappeared quickly, I had seen it.

"We'll see," she said before leaving.

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the floor. For five years I had imagined this moment, wondering where my daughter was, whether she was happy, whether someone held her when she cried, and whether she ever looked at the world with the same eyes I remembered from those seven precious hours I had been allowed to keep her.

Now she was here, inside this house and only a few doors away.

I should have felt as though I had won. Instead, I felt afraid, because hope was dangerous - hope had already broken me once.

I unpacked my suitcase, placed my few belongings inside the wardrobe, and read Lily's schedule twice, but by the time I finally lay down, sleep still refused to come, and every time I closed my eyes I saw her face and remembered the way she had held my hand as though she had been waiting for me.

At exactly six twenty-eight the next morning, footsteps stopped outside my door. I opened my eyes immediately, and despite everything, I smiled.

When I opened the door, Lily stood there in pale blue pajamas, her dark hair messy from sleep and her hands clasped together in front of her, looking completely serious.

I crouched until we were eye level. "Good morning."

She stared at me for several seconds before whispering, "You're still here."

The words hit somewhere deeper than they should have.

"I told you I wasn't going anywhere."

She studied my face carefully, not like a child looking at a stranger but like someone checking whether a promise was real, and finally she held out her hand. "Breakfast."

I blinked. "Breakfast?"

She nodded. "Come."

A laugh escaped before I could stop it, and I placed my hand in hers, her fingers closing around mine immediately - the simple gesture shouldn't have felt familiar, but somehow it did.

Breakfast revealed something I hadn't expected about Lily: she noticed everything. She refused strawberries because she claimed they tasted "too happy," insisted her toast be cut into triangles, and seemed to know whenever someone was hiding something.

A young maid named Clara entered with a tray of tea, and Lily glanced at her once before saying, "Clara is upset."

I looked toward the maid. Her expression appeared perfectly calm.

"What makes you think that?"

"She bites her cheek when she worries."

I looked closer and realized Lily was right. Clara immediately looked away, while I turned back to the child beside me, and Lily continued eating as though she hadn't just noticed something most adults would have missed.

A few minutes later, Mrs. Hayes entered the dining room, and Lily didn't even look up. "Mrs. Hayes didn't sleep."

The housekeeper stopped. I looked at Lily. "How do you know?"

"She smells like tea."

I frowned. "So?"

"She only drinks tea when she can't sleep."

Mrs. Hayes remained silent, her eyes moving from Lily to me before shifting away, and that was when I realized something - Lily wasn't simply observant, she understood people, perhaps far better than a child her age should.

After breakfast, we walked through the gardens. Lily didn't speak much, but she didn't seem uncomfortable with the silence either - she seemed to enjoy it, and the quiet between us felt strangely natural, like something we had done before.

Eventually, she looked up at me. "Will you read to me later?"

"Of course."

She nodded, and we continued walking. A few minutes passed before she asked, "Will you still be here tomorrow?"

"Yes."

"And next week?"

"Yes."

She continued walking, but then came the question she had clearly been afraid to ask. "And next year?"

My chest tightened. She didn't look at me - she simply waited for my answer.

I swallowed. "Yes."

For a moment she said nothing, then released a tiny breath that sounded almost like relief.

By the fourth day, Lily had completely attached herself to me. She followed me through the manor, sat beside me during meals, and brought me books before bedtime, expecting me to read every single one. During reading hour, she climbed into my lap without asking, opened her book, and settled against me as though it were the most natural thing in the world.

I looked down at her, and she looked back. "What?"

"Nothing."

Satisfied, she returned to her book.

I couldn't focus on a single word because holding her felt too natural, too familiar, and a strange ache filled my chest that Lily noticed immediately. "You're sad."

"I'm fine."

She studied me for a moment before reaching up and touching my cheek. "You don't have to pretend with me."

My breath caught, and before I could answer, a voice came from the doorway. "How is she?"

I looked up and found Damian Blackwood standing there. The moment Lily heard him, her body changed - it was subtle, but her shoulders became tense and her hand tightened around my sleeve. Damian noticed, his eyes moving from his daughter to me.

"She's doing very well," I said.

He nodded once. "Walk with me."

I helped Lily stand. "I'll be right back."

Her expression changed immediately. "You promise?"

The question surprised both of us.

I smiled. "I promise."

Only after she nodded did I leave with Damian, and we walked far enough that Lily could no longer hear us.

"Your file arrived from the agency."

"I assumed it would."

"Edinburgh."

"Yes."

"The recommendation was impressive."

I waited, knowing there was a reason he was telling me this.

"You've worked with difficult children before?"

"Children who needed patience."

He studied me. "Four nannies resigned from this position."

"I know."

"And you still accepted."

"Yes."

"Why?"

I looked back toward the room where Lily was waiting. "Because she needed someone to stay."

For the first time his expression changed, though only slightly. "Lily doesn't trust people."

"Children can surprise us."

"No." His voice was quiet. "But you don't understand. Lily doesn't attach herself to people."

I said nothing.

"She has never behaved this way with anyone."

I held his gaze. "Until now."

Silence stretched between us, then Damian spoke. "I protect what belongs in this house."

The words sounded like a warning, and I didn't look away. "So do I."

For a moment surprise appeared in his eyes before disappearing again, and he turned and walked away, leaving me with a realization I couldn't ignore: Damian Blackwood wasn't simply suspicious of me - he was afraid of what my presence meant.

Later that afternoon, while Lily rested, I decided to learn more about the manor, not searching for secrets, not yet, only trying to understand the place where my daughter lived.

But the east wing stopped me. At the end of the corridor stood a heavy wooden door, old, locked, and easy to overlook, except it clearly hadn't been forgotten - beside it sat a small vase filled with fresh white flowers.

I stared at them. They weren't dying; someone had replaced them recently. Someone came here. Someone cared about whatever was behind that door.

I stepped closer, but before I could examine the lock, a voice stopped me. "Can I help you find something, Miss Sterling?"

I turned. Clara stood several feet away with folded towels in her arms, her smile polite but her eyes not.

"I'm just learning my way around."

"Of course." Her gaze moved briefly toward the locked door before returning to me. "The family areas are in the opposite direction."

It was a polite warning, and I understood it. "Thank you."

I walked away, but I didn't need to turn around to know what happened next - the moment I reached the corner, Clara's footsteps changed direction. She wasn't returning to work. She was going somewhere else.

I slowed my steps, and a few seconds later I heard a door open in the distance.

Damian's study.

Someone was reporting my every move.

I almost smiled. Interesting.

I looked back toward the east wing. The locked door, the fresh flowers, and the fear in everyone's eyes whenever they passed it all pointed toward the same conclusion: whatever was hidden inside Blackwood Manor wasn't simply a family secret. Someone was still grieving over it.

And deep inside, I knew the truth I had spent five years searching for was connected to that room. I just didn't know yet that opening that door would force me to question everything I believed about the day my daughter was taken from me.
