Chapter 1

The day the acceptance letter from the country's top university came,

my daughter was pushed off a building.

And my wife, the finest lawyer in Marisville, stepped forward to defend the boy who did it.

"Bruno Fox, I know you're jealous of Calvin."

"But that gives you no right to smear a child with something this vicious."

"I'm a lawyer. I only fight for justice."

With nothing but her hard, flawless command of the law,

Annette Carlisle won the case without breaking a sweat.

And she nailed my daughter and me to a pillar of shame that would never come down.

Watching the way she fussed over Calvin Pruitt and his son,

I understood. This marriage of twenty years had come to its end.

...

I lost the first trial, and it drained everything out of me.

The back of my shirt had long gone cold and damp with sweat.

Annette stood at the defense table, watching me, calm.

"Bruno, why put yourself through this?"

"I've told you. What Calvin and I have isn't what you imagine."

"Why bring all this on yourself, humiliate yourself like this?"

Behind her, Calvin Pruitt lifted his head just slightly.

There was a flicker of hidden satisfaction on his face.

"That's right, Bruno. You've really got me wrong. Annette and I are just ordinary friends."

"Last time, she went to Thomas Pruitt's parent-teacher meeting because she felt for him, growing up without a mother. There was nothing more to it than that."

"If you're upset, hit me, curse me, do whatever you want. But why make up a lie like this, take it out on a child?"

Not long ago Calvin had divorced and come home.

Annette pitied him, a man raising a boy on his own.

She helped him find an apartment, arranged a job for him.

Then she started saying how pitiful it was that Thomas had no mother.

She'd go over every day to tutor him, take him out to see the sights.

When Emily Carlisle was in the hospital and called Annette, she got a scolding instead, told she was faking illness to steal attention, that she didn't know any better.

Her heart had long since tilted toward Calvin Pruitt and his son.

No matter what my daughter and I said, no matter what we did,

she would never believe us.

I lowered my head, letting the motion of my hands cover the pain inside me.

"I'm going to appeal."

"You may be able to walk away from your own daughter, but I can't."

"As long as I'm alive, I will get justice for my girl."

Annette's expression didn't shift at all.

She looked at me the way you'd look at a child who didn't understand anything.

"You won't win."

"As long as I'm Calvin's attorney, no one in Marisville will dare take your case."

I knew, of course, that the great Attorney Carlisle never lost.

But Emily was hurt so badly.

It took days of nonstop care in the ICU before they moved her to a regular ward.

Her right leg fractured, blood pooled in her brain, three ribs broken.

For the rest of her life, she would never be as healthy, as happy, as she once was.

Back at the hospital, the moment I saw that pale little face,

the tears came before I could stop them.

My sobbing woke her.

When she saw it was me, she clumsily lifted a bandaged hand.

"Dad, don't cry."

"Mom's the best lawyer in Marisville. With her on it, she'll get justice for me. I know she will."

She was the one who'd been hurt.

And yet here she was, turning to comfort me.

I couldn't get the truth of the verdict past my lips.

I could only turn my face away and let the tears run inward.

"That's right. So Emily has to be strong too."

"Study hard, and become a lawyer even greater than your mom."

The Annette of today was no longer the pride of us, father and daughter.

But my Emily, she would have a far better road ahead.
