The man in the pixelated photos was clearly me. I found Catherine trembling all over. And she hugged me in pain.

“The news can not be suppressed. Benjamin, you rarely appear in public. This matter can only be entrusted to you to recognize first.”

She reached out to hold me, but the words she said made me fall into an ice cave.

“I plan to abort the child first. We can have another one in the future.”

At that moment, my heart completely died. I wiped away my tears and dialled a number that had been blocked for years.

The phone was connected and a woman answered. Her voice was musical and tinged with danger.

“So you finally… came to beg me?”

“What did you say?” My voice trembled.

“The matter of Herbert's kidnapping can't be exposed. He just signed a big international brand endorsement. If this gets out, his career will be ruined.” 

Catherine's tone was so calm that it was almost cruel, “But you're different. You rarely appear in public. As long as you admit to this matter, public opinion will soon pass.”

I stared dead-on at the woman I had loved for years. “Catherine, do you know what you are talking about?”

“Before, you wanted to recognize Herbert's child with someone else and I agreed. Now, you want me to admit to being kidnapped and humiliated for his sake?”

Her voice was low, “Benjamin, count on me to beg you.”

“Begging me?” I laughed, but tears rolled down my face.“You want me to ruin my reputation for him?”

“Herbert can't handle this matter. He's already depressed.” 

Her voice was urgent, “But you're different, you've always been strong.”

“So I deserve to be sacrificed?” I practically squeezed the words out of my mouth.

“It's not a sacrifice, it's just a temporary measure.” 

She paused and softened her tone, “Benjamin, I plan to abort the child first.”

My world collapsed in an instant. My voice croaked, “Catherine, this is our child!!!”

“I know!” 

Her voice suddenly rose in agitation, “But Herbert can't stand any  more shocks right now!”

My breathing stopped for a second. I laughed, smiling through my tears.

“Okay, I’ll do it for you.”

She was about to say something else when the phone suddenly rang. On the other end of the line, there was a panicked voice.

“Catherine, I had a nightmare. I'm so scared! Will they expose what happened to me?” 

Herbert's weak voice came through the microphone.

Catherine's tone instantly changed as she gently coaxed, “Don't be afraid, Herbert. I won't let anyone hurt you.”

The phone hung up. She turned around and left without hesitation.

The next day, Catherine quietly went to the hospital.

“Excuse me, may I ask where Catherine is?”

When the nurse saw me, her eyes flashed with a hint of doubt. “Catherine? Isn't her husband accompanying her for an abortion?”
