My Three Houses Vanished Overnight Chapter 1

1: 1

The family's three old houses were slated for demolition.

I went home to find the deeds, and they were gone.

My daughter told me, "Mom, you've got it wrong."

"When did we ever own any property? We only rent this one place."

My husband said I was making trouble out of nothing, fussing all day long.

If I really had nothing to do, he said, I could go help look after my grandson.

I refused to believe it. I went to the housing authority alone to check the records.

There was no property in my name.

Relatives and neighbors all said I was getting senile.

Until the day I slipped and fell.

Under the bed, I found a voice recorder buried in dust.

……

That afternoon, I was carrying Jayden Abbott through the park.

I ran into Annette James, an old neighbor of mine.

From her I learned the old houses were coming down.

She even said I had three of them in my name.

Do the math, she said, and I was about to come into a fortune.

Something stirred in me.

She was right. If all three came down.

I could trade up for a bigger place and still have plenty left over.

So I hurried Jayden back home.

I left him to play in the living room while I turned my own room upside down.

At first I remembered clearly. The deeds were in the storage box on top of the wardrobe.

I'd put them there myself. There was a little lock on it.

I dragged over a chair and climbed up.

The lock had rusted, and it took real effort to twist it open.

Inside were quilts, old clothes, my daughter's childhood toys.

I dug through everything. The deeds weren't there.

My stomach dropped, and I went to the nightstand.

The bankbook, the household registration, the marriage certificate were all in the drawer.

Only those deeds were missing.

The more I searched, the more frantic I got, and the more frantic I got, the messier it all became.

There was a hidden compartment behind the bookshelf in the study, where I kept my valuables.

I lay flat on the floor and reached inside.

Still nothing.

Cold sweat broke over me.

Just then my daughter came home from work.

She pushed the door open and froze at the mess in front of her.

She didn't even change out of her shoes, just rushed in shouting.

"Mom, what are you doing? Did we get robbed?"

I patted Jayden's back and asked without turning around.

"Do you remember where I put the deeds?"

"The three houses back in our old hometown."

She blanked for a couple of seconds, then gave me a strange look.

"Mom, are you confused?"

"When did we ever own a house? Even this place is rented."

My hands went still.

It couldn't be. We had them, I was sure of it.

She tossed her bag onto the couch and sighed, exasperated.

"Mom, have you been watching that show again?"

"The one where the lead's mother-in-law has three houses."

"You've watched so much you're treating the plot like it's real."

I opened my mouth to argue.

But she said it with such certainty that I didn't know how to answer.

At dinner, I couldn't help bringing it up again.

I asked my husband, "Have you heard anything about the old houses being demolished?"

He set down his chopsticks, his face darkening.

"Yolanda Rhodes, if we owned three houses, would we be crammed into a rental?"

"You finally get to retire. Stop filling your head with nonsense all day."

"Can't you just live in peace?"

"If you're that bored, keep looking after Jayden. Don't go stirring up trouble."

He'd shut me down with no room to answer.

I lowered my head and shoveled rice, but something sat heavy in my chest.

After that, it was like I was possessed.

I went around looking for proof.

I went to the housing authority. The young woman at the window searched for a long time.

Then politely told me there was no property in my name.

I went to the police station, then the neighborhood association.

Every person I could think to ask, I asked.

Relatives said I was getting senile. Neighbors treated it all as a joke.

Every piece of evidence pointed to the same answer.

I really had gotten it wrong.

But those memories of the houses were so vivid.

The floor plans, the direction they faced, even the color of the curtains, I remembered all of it.

In the end I couldn't hold up any longer.

I figured my mind must have gone wrong after retirement.

I decided to treat it all as a dream.

But that day, picking Jayden up from school and heading back to the bedroom, my foot slipped.

I hit the floor hard.

What I'd stepped on was Jayden's toy car.

I lay there a long while, catching my breath.

Slowly bracing my hands on the floor, just as I was about to get up.

I saw the voice recorder lying under the bed.

Silver, covered in a layer of dust.

Fighting through the pain, I reached out and pulled it free.

Then fumbled for the play button and pressed it.

A voice came out, hoarse and rushed.

Like it had been forced out through a clenched throat.

But I knew it. It was my own voice.

"Yolanda, you have to remember."

"In this house, don't believe a single word from anyone!"
