Chapter 2

Aria POV

Cyrus gently guided Brianna out of the closet. She cast a long, blank look back into the room—her eyes sliding over the torn dress, over me, without a flicker of recognition—before he murmured something about chamomile tea and steered her away.

I stood alone, a ghost at my own funeral.

My legs gave out. I sank to the plush carpet, my body wracked with tremors so violent they felt like a fever. My fingers brushed against the shredded silk, the delicate pearls scattering like frozen tears. My dream lay in a heap of ruined fabric at my feet.

The door opened again. Cyrus stood there, his cold demeanor back in place. He tossed a simple, off-the-rack white dress onto the pile of ruined couture. It was plain, cheap, and utterly devoid of joy.

"You'll wear this," he commanded.

I looked from the cheap dress to his face, a bitter taste filling my mouth. "I won't," I said, my voice shaking but firm. "I'm not marrying you."

He didn't argue. He simply pulled out his phone. He tilted the screen towards me. An email draft, addressed to the Stanford University Board on Judicial Affairs. The subject line was stark: Formal Inquiry into Aria Rojas' Doctoral Research.

He swiped. The screen changed. A live feed of my grandmother's vitals from the UCSF patient portal. A steady, rhythmic beep emanated from the phone's speaker, a sound that was both life and a threat.

"This monitor," Cyrus said, his voice dangerously soft. "This care. This experimental treatment that is her only hope...it all costs money, Aria. My money. My insurance."

The twin threats hung in the air, a vacuum that stole the breath from my lungs. He was holding my entire life—my past, my present, my future—hostage.

"Your little Stanford degree is worthless without my connections to get you a top-tier job in the Valley," he added, twisting the knife. "You'll be a disgraced academic with a sick grandmother you can't afford to care for."

His tone shifted, becoming gentle, persuasive. A classic gaslighting tactic I was only now beginning to recognize. "Just get through today. For Elena. For Brianna. We can be a family. I'll take care of all of you. I promise."

Bile rose in my throat. The word "family" from his lips was a grotesque perversion.

As if on cue, my own phone, lying on the dresser, buzzed. I glanced at it. An email. The sender was Katrin Schmidt, QuantumLeap Dynamics, Berlin. A firm I had interned with two years ago, a place where my work had been valued, where I had felt respected.

The subject: Job Offer — Senior Research Scientist.

The words on the screen were a lifeline. A single, blinding spark in the suffocating darkness. I quickly pocketed the phone before Cyrus could see.

I looked up at him, my eyes now empty of tears, empty of everything but a cold, hard resolve. "Fine," I said, my voice dead. "For my grandmother. But after today, we are done."

He smiled, a smug, triumphant expression. He was confident he could control me indefinitely. "Of course, darling."

He forced me to sit at the vanity. A stylist he had hired, a stranger, began to work on my hair and makeup. I sat like a prisoner being prepped for my own execution, my reflection in the mirror a hollow-eyed doll.

Brianna entered, clad in a beautiful rose-gold bridesmaid dress. She drifted past me without a word, her gaze sliding over me as if I were part of the furniture, and stopped beside Cyrus. She rested a hand lightly on his arm and murmured something too quiet for me to hear, her expression placid, detached.

I watched the silent exchange, a chill creeping down my spine—a fleeting shadow I couldn't quite name.

I was forced to walk out to the living room. It had been transformed into a small, intimate ceremony space. An officiant stood by the fireplace. A videographer, a young man named Marco Valentine, was setting up a camera and a laptop. A livestream. For Elena to watch from her hospital bed.

The sight of that camera galvanized me. I had to perform. I had to smile. For Elena.

Cyrus took my hand. His touch felt like ice. He leaned in, his breath hot against my ear as he whispered, "Smile. Your grandmother is watching."

The ceremony began. The officiant spoke of love, trust, and partnership. Every word was a lie, a hot poker against my soul.

When it was time for the vows, Cyrus delivered a flawless, moving speech about his undying devotion, about how I made him a better man. All the while, his thumb was grinding into the back of my hand, a painful, warning grip hidden from the camera.

Then, it was my turn. I looked directly into the camera lens, trying to project a love that had been poisoned and destroyed. I was speaking not to Cyrus, but to my grandmother.

I recited the vows I had written weeks ago, in a different lifetime. The words, once so full of meaning, now tasted like ash in my mouth.

Brianna, standing beside me as the maid of honor, wept softly. A perfect performance of joyful, sisterly emotion. My mind flashed back to all the times Brianna had sacrificed for me, working double shifts at a diner so I could afford my textbooks. Was that all a lie, too? A long, calculated investment in a future she planned to steal?

"I now pronounce you husband and wife."

Cyrus leaned in to kiss me. I turned my head at the last possible second. His lips brushed against my cheek, a cold, dry contact. It was a small, pathetic act of defiance, but it was all I had.

He shot me a look of pure fury for a split second before his face arranged itself back into a beaming smile for the camera.

"And now," he announced to the officiant and the videographer, his voice booming with false cheer, "a little slideshow of our memories together."
