Chapter 2

I dragged the silver pen across the thick paper. My signature looped over the dotted line, sharp and final.

"There," I said, tossing the pen back onto the mahogany table. It clattered against Clara's untouched champagne flute. "Every penny of your family's wealth stays right here."

Julian stared at the wet ink. His confident smirk vanished. He reached for the paper, his fingers brushing the edge as if checking to see if the signature was real.

"You actually signed it," he muttered, his voice dropping.

"I told you I was leaving," I replied. "I don't make empty threats."

Clara picked up the document. A triumphant smile flashed across her lips before she hid it behind a mask of fake sympathy. "This is for the best, Aria. You can start fresh. Find yourself."

"I know exactly who I am," I told her, stepping away from the table. "You're the one who needs to figure out how to run a hotel."

Julian stood up, kicking his chair back. "You think you can just walk out? Who's going to handle the Tokyo delegation arriving tomorrow? You haven't briefed my team."

"Your new vice president can handle it," I said, gesturing toward Clara. "She has the right vision. Remember?"

An older board member cleared his throat. "Aria, be reasonable. The Tokyo contract is worth ten million dollars. You can't abandon the negotiations midway."

"I'm no longer an employee of this company," I reminded him. "My marital waiver includes a full resignation. Effective immediately."

"Aria, stop playing games," Julian snapped. He walked around the table, blocking my path to the door. "Get back to your office and finish the transition files. We'll discuss this divorce nonsense at home."

"My office is empty," I said, meeting his furious gaze without blinking. "And so is our marriage. Have your lawyer file the papers by tomorrow morning."

"If you walk out that door, you get nothing," Julian warned, pointing a finger at my chest. "No severance. No alimony. You'll be on the street."

"I'd rather be on the street than in your bed," I said.

I sidestepped him. My shoes struck the marble floor in a steady rhythm, carrying me away from the boardroom. The oak doors swung shut behind me, cutting off Julian's angry shout.

The lobby felt colder than usual. I stood behind the polished mahogany front desk, tossing my personal planners and a framed photo of my late mother into a small leather suitcase.

Next to me, the front desk manager, Martin, wiped sweat from his forehead. The main switchboard lit up with blinking red lights. The phone rang incessantly. A wealthy guest in a fur coat was yelling at a bellhop near the elevators.

"Mrs. Von Weber," Martin pleaded, his voice cracking. "Mr. Tanaka is screaming on line one. The presidential suite heating system just failed, and he only speaks to you."

I zipped my suitcase shut. "I don't work here anymore, Martin."

"But he's threatening to pull the entire Tokyo delegation!" Martin wrung his hands. "Julian isn't answering his phone. Clara told me to figure it out myself. I don't have the authorization codes for the emergency HVAC contractors."

"That sounds like a management problem," I said, grabbing the handle of my suitcase.

"Please," Martin begged, stepping in front of me. "Just one phone call. Tell Mr. Tanaka you're handling it. He trusts you."

"He trusts the vice president of the Edelweiss," I corrected him. "And that's no longer my title."

I reached past Martin, grabbed the thick plastic cord connecting the switchboard to the wall, and yanked it out. The flashing lights died instantly. The ringing stopped.

"Tell Clara to fix it," I told him.

Martin stared at the dead phone console, his mouth hanging open.

I walked around the counter and headed for the exit.

I pushed through the brass revolving doors. The biting winter wind slammed into me, carrying windblown snow. I dragged my suitcase down the granite steps, the wheels grinding against the ice.

At the bottom, I stopped and looked back up at the Edelweiss Grand Hotel. The towering stone facade loomed against the gray sky, magnificent and cold.

Two years ago, Julian's grandmother lay dying in a sterile hospital room. Her frail, trembling fingers had reached out, pressing the nineteenth-century land deed to this very property into my palm. The thick parchment felt impossibly heavy. "Protect it, Aria," she had whispered, her breathing ragged. "Julian will ruin it. Only you can save our legacy."

I closed my eyes against the freezing wind. I failed her. But I saved myself.

A sleek black Maybach glided through the snow, stopping inches from my suitcase. The dark tinted window slid down silently.

Roman leaned across the leather seat. His dark eyes locked onto mine, sharp and calculating. He wore a tailored navy suit that contrasted with the stark white winter outside.

"You took longer than I expected," Roman said, resting his arm on the window frame.

"I had to wrap a present for my husband," I replied, pulling my coat tighter around my shoulders.

"A generous parting gift?"

"I gave him all his money and a broken heating system."

Roman let out a low chuckle. The sound was rich, cutting through the howling wind. He pushed a thick manila folder through the open window. "Take a look."

I took the folder and flipped the cover open. The wind whipped the pages, but I held them steady. It was an acquisition contract for the Serenity Alpine Retreat, the Edelweiss's biggest competitor across the valley. I scanned down to the purchase price.

$0.

"Zero dollars?" I asked, looking up at him. "How did you manage this?"

"The owners owe me a favor," Roman explained, his tone casual but his eyes intense. "They're stepping down. The property needs a complete overhaul. It needs someone who knows how to crush the Edelweiss."

He tapped the edge of the open folder.

"Are you ready to fight back?" Roman asked.

I stared at the black Maybach door in the snow. The pristine metal reflected the white drifts around us. The cold seeped through my boots, but a sudden fire flared in my chest.

I reached out and pulled the door open.

I slid into the heated passenger seat. The door shut with a solid thud, locking out the freezing wind.

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket. I pulled it out. The screen lit up the dim interior of the car.

Fourteen missed calls. All from Julian.

A new text message pushed through, vibrating against my palm.

"Aria, where did you put the contact information for the 300 Asian VIPs?"

Roman leaned over. His warm hand reached out, and his index finger gently covered my glowing phone screen.
