Chapter 5

The room was filled with shouting when I walked in. Stephen’s voice echoed against the walls, sharp and furious.

“How could you do this, Charlotte?” he yelled. “You sent the police? To arrest Layla?”

I clenched my hands, trying to stay calm. “She tried to kill me, Stephen! What was I supposed to do—thank her?”

Before he could reply, my father’s voice cut in. “Enough!” His tone was cold and firm. He stood near the window, arms crossed, eyes full of disappointment. “Do you realize what you’ve done? This is a scandal, Charlotte. People are already talking. Layla is willing to apologize now, and you—”

“Apologize?” I whispered in disbelief. “She almost strangled me to death.”

He glared at me. “And yet, she’s the one being reasonable. You should learn from that. Don’t make this worse than it already is.”

I turned to him, my chest tightening. “Dad, she—”

“Not another word,” he snapped. “You’re going to end this. No more police. No more drama.”

Layla, standing beside Stephen, sniffled softly. A fake bandage wrapped around her wrist. Her eyes shimmered with well-practiced tears. “Charlotte,” she said weakly, “I didn’t mean to hurt you. I was just scared. I lost control.”

It took everything in me not to scream.

My father’s gaze hardened. “You hear that? She’s apologizing. Now, you do the same.”

“I—”

“Now, Charlotte.”

Something inside me gave up. I didn’t want to argue anymore. I was tired — tired of fighting, tired of being the villain in their story.

I nodded slowly. “Fine. Do whatever you want. I’ll apologize.”

Stephen’s expression softened slightly, but his voice remained cold. “Good. You’ll apologize to her — and to Jackson.”

“Jackson?” My voice cracked.

“Yes,” he said. “You scared him. He saw you and Layla fighting, and now he won’t stop crying. He thinks you’re dangerous.”

My throat tightened. “Stephen, that’s not fair—”

“Enough,” he said again. “You’ll do it.”

So I did. Layla sat on the couch, pretending to look fragile. Jackson sat beside her, his little arms crossed, his face cold.

“I’m sorry,” I said softly. “For everything that happened.”

Layla nodded, lowering her eyes like the saint she pretended to be. “It’s alright, Charlotte. We all make mistakes.”

Jackson stared at me, frowning. “Fine,” he said quietly. Then he grabbed a pillow and threw it at me. “But I still hate you!”

“Jackson!” Stephen barked.

But I didn’t react. I simply stood there, the pillow at my feet, forcing a faint smile. “It’s okay,” I whispered. “I understand.”

When they left, the silence in the house felt heavier than ever.

That night, my phone buzzed with a message from my father.

Dad: It’s an act. I believe you. Don’t worry — I’ll handle the divorce. Go home to your mother. I sent Stephen and Layla on a business trip. You can leave now while they’re gone.

I stared at the message for a long time before a single tear slipped down my cheek. Relief — quiet, soft, almost unbelievable — filled me.

For the first time in months, my father believed me. He finally saw the truth.

Two days later, the doctor discharged me. Stephen came to pick me up, his charm back in full force. He walked into the room with flowers in hand, a warm smile plastered on his face.

“Charlotte,” he said softly, “I’m sorry. For everything. I was just… angry, emotional. The business has been hard lately.”

I stared at the flowers — bright red roses. The same ones he gave me the first time he lied.

He set them on the bedside table and reached for my hand. “Please, let’s just start over. I’ll focus on work. You can take care of Jackson for now. He needs you.”

I nodded faintly. “Alright.”

He smiled, kissing my forehead. “That’s my wife.”

But in my heart, I knew he wasn’t my husband anymore — not really.

Then, I saw her — Layla — waiting by the hallway, her arms crossed, her expression cold and smug.

“So,” she said softly, her voice laced with venom, “you’re really still here.”

I didn’t answer. I just stared at her, tired, empty.

She smirked. “You know, once I come back from this trip, you better not be here anymore.” She leaned closer, her perfume sharp and heavy. “I swear, Charlotte, if I find you still breathing the same air as me, I’ll make sure you regret it.”

I met her eyes calmly, forcing a small, hollow smile. “Yeah, sure,” I said quietly. “You won’t have to see me again.”

Layla straightened, clearly satisfied with what she thought was fear. “Good,” she said, brushing imaginary dust off her coat. “Because next time, I won’t be so patient.”

That same night, I made the call. Two nights later, the plan unfolded quietly. The hospital issued a false report: Jackson Smith, deceased. Kidney failure.

But Jackson wasn’t gone. He was sleeping in my arms, wrapped in a small blanket, unaware of the chaos we’d left behind. My mother had arranged everything — forged documents, private jet, new identity.

Because if they think they can be happy with me gone, then they’re wrong because I’d take their kid with me!

As the plane took off, I looked down at the city lights fading beneath the clouds.

My heart ached, but this time, it wasn’t from betrayal. It was from the bittersweet relief of freedom.

Outside the window, the sky stretched wide and endless — a new beginning painted in shades of gold and gray.

Meanwhile, back in the city, Stephen rushed into the hospital room where the empty bed awaited. His face was pale, his voice shaking.

“Where’s my son?” he demanded. “Where is he?”

The nurse looked down, her voice trembling. “I’m sorry, Mr. Smith. He… he didn’t make it.”
