Chapter 2

Tears wouldn’t stop falling. My chest hurt so much that I could barely breathe. I sat at the edge of the bed, gripping the blanket like it was the only thing keeping me from breaking apart completely.

Then the door opened. Stephen stepped in quietly, his face pale and drawn. “Charlotte,” he said softly, walking toward me. “Hey, love… I just came from the hospital. They said Jackson’s condition isn’t good. But we’ll find a donor, okay? I promise. He’s going to be fine.”

His words felt like poison. Each one made it harder to breathe. Love. How easily he said that. The same mouth that told Layla she was the only one.

I forced myself to look at him. His eyes were full of concern, but now, all I could see was the man who had lied to me for years. I tried to speak, but no words came out. My throat closed. My whole body trembled.

He moved closer, reaching out to hold me. “I know this is hard,” he whispered, “but you’re not alone. We’ll get through this together.”

Together?

I wanted to laugh, but the sound that came out was closer to a sob.

Before I could pull away, another voice spoke from the doorway. “Charlotte…”

Layla.

She stood there, pretending to look worried. Her tone was sweet, too sweet. “I’m sorry,” she said, stepping into the room. “This must be too much for you. You’ve been taking care of Jackson for years… You can rest now. Stephen and I will handle everything.”

Rest. That word made my stomach twist.

I wanted to scream. To tell her I knew everything. That I had heard their conversation. That I knew she was Jackson’s real mother. That Stephen was hers.

But instead, I just nodded faintly, wiping my tears. “Alright,” I whispered, my voice barely audible.

“Good,” she said, giving me a small smile that made my skin crawl. “You need to stay strong. For Jackson.”

Then she turned to Stephen, touching his arm gently. “Let’s go. The doctors are waiting.”

When they left, the silence filled the room again. That was when I broke. Completely.

I grabbed my phone with shaking hands and called my lawyer. “I want a divorce,” I said, my voice shaking.

There was a pause. “Mrs. Smith, are you sure? You know your prenuptial agreement forbids divorce unless your father approves. Your family has strict rules about divorce and they condoned it—”

“I don’t care,” I snapped. My heart was racing, but my voice was steady now. “Draft the papers. I’ll make my father agree. Just don’t tell Stephen about it. Do you understand?”

The lawyer hesitated. “Yes, ma’am.”

“Good. I’ll be in touch soon.”

When I hung up, I leaned back, breathing hard. My hands were cold. My body felt weak. But at least I had made one decision for myself.

No more pretending. No more lies.

Later that afternoon, I went to the hospital.

I told myself I wasn’t doing it for Stephen. Or for Layla. I was doing it for him — the little boy who called me “Mommy” every night, who made me believe in love, who made my empty world full.

Even if he wasn’t mine, I loved him.

When I reached the pediatric wing, I stopped in the hallway. The door to Jackson’s room was half-open, and I heard voices inside.

Layla’s soft tone. Stephen’s deep one. And a small, innocent voice that made my heart ache.

“But Mom,” Jackson said quietly, “why do I have two mommies? Why can’t it just be you or Mommy Charlotte?”

Layla laughed softly, brushing his hair. “Sweetheart, Charlotte… she’s not really your mommy. You know that. It’s me, and I told you to keep it a secret now or she will hurt you… and me? Do you want that? She surely will separate me and daddy.”

My breath caught.

Stephen’s voice followed. “We told you, son, it’s just what people think. You did well pretending, remember? You have to keep doing that, okay? Until we say so.”

Jackson giggled. “I know, Daddy. You said I should act nice so Mommy Charlotte won’t cry.”

The world spun. My hand clutched the doorframe, trying not to fall.

Layla leaned closer to him. “Good boy. You’re so smart. Once you’re better, we’ll live together — just the three of us, remember?”

“Okay, Mommy,” Jackson said happily, his little voice bright. “I love you more than her anyway.”

They all laughed — Stephen, Layla, and the boy I thought was my son.

Something inside me twisted painfully. My heart dropped. More than her.

I pushed the door open slightly, just enough to see them. Jackson sat on the bed, smiling at Layla as she wiped his face with a towel.

“You don’t love Mommy Charlotte anymore?” Stephen teased lightly, ruffling his hair.

Jackson frowned, his tiny lips pouting. “She’s mean sometimes,” he said. “She always tells me to sleep early and eat vegetables. She doesn’t even let me watch cartoons.”

Layla chuckled softly. “She’s just strict, baby. She doesn’t mean to be mean.”

“But I don’t like her,” Jackson said firmly. “I like you, Mommy. You’re nicer. You give me candies, and you don’t shout.”

My hands trembled against the doorframe. The words hit harder than I expected.

Stephen leaned closer to him. “Remember what we talked about, Jackson?” he said gently. “You have to keep being nice to her. Don’t make her suspicious, okay?”

Jackson nodded eagerly. “Yes, Daddy. You said to pretend so she won’t be sad.”

Layla smiled and kissed the boy’s forehead. “That’s my good son.”

I turned around and walked straight to the hospital administrator’s office. The nurse looked up in surprise when I entered.

“Mrs. Smith,” she said, standing quickly. “How can I help you?”

I set my bag on the desk and took a deep breath. “I’ll pay for all of Jackson Smith’s medical bills,” I said calmly. “Every single one. Whatever it costs, send the invoice to me.”

She nodded slowly. “Of course, Mrs. Smith. That’s very generous of you.”

“But,” I continued, my voice sharper now, “under no circumstances is he to receive a kidney transplant. Do you understand? Not now. Not ever.”

The woman blinked, startled. “I— I’m sorry, but—”

“I said,” I repeated firmly, “you’ll be fully compensated. Just make sure that surgery never happens.”
