Chapter 1

The terminal glass threw my reflection back at me.

Dark hair cut sharp at my jaw. A trench coat that did not wrinkle. Black pumps planted on polished stone. I looked like a woman who had somewhere to be.

The girl who used to look away from mirrors was not in that glass.

"Flight 402 landed twenty minutes ago," Julian said behind me.

I turned. His gray wool coat sat clean on his shoulders. Six-two. Gold frames. The same quiet he had used in recovery rooms when he did not want a patient to panic.

"Welcome home, Evelyn."

"This is not a homecoming."

He touched the side of his glasses. "I know."

"Did you bring the files?"

"In the car. Are you sure you want to do this tonight?"

"I waited five years. I am not waiting for morning."

"He does not know you are back."

"That is the point." I took the suitcase handle. "I did not come here to find a family."

Julian fell into step beside me. "You came to take one apart."

"Yes."

The sliding doors opened on a New York wind that cut straight through cloth. I did not shiver. Cold was only weather. The other kind lived further in.

"You look different," he said.

"I lived."

"You look like someone who intends to keep doing it."

"I have to. He is still out there thinking I am hiding in Europe."

"Let him."

Julian opened the town car. Rain hit the windows the second the door shut. Manhattan smeared into wet light. The tires found a rhythm on the asphalt that I felt in my teeth.

"You are quiet," he said.

"I am thinking."

"About him."

"I never stopped."

"Do not give him the ride into the city. He already had five years of your head."

I watched the water run down the glass.

The study door had shut hard enough to rattle the frames.

I was eighteen. Liam stood over me with my diary open. The pages were smeared where my hand had pressed too hard. I had written his name too many times. I had written love as if it were a secret that could stay on paper.

"You wrote this," he said.

"Give it back."

He stepped in until the desk hit the backs of my thighs. His mouth was almost at my ear.

"I love you too, Evelyn."

It sounded like kindness. It was the first lock.

"On your knees."

The floor was cold. I went down anyway. I always did. He held the camera up and told me what to type.

I am your pet.

The letters looked ordinary on the screen. That was how he liked it. Ordinary words doing extraordinary harm.

My knees hurt. The camera light made a small red eye in the dark polish of the desk. I thought, stupidly, of the lock on my old bedroom in the big house, the one that had only ever closed from the inside. This lock closed the other way.

"And who am I?"

I said the word he wanted. I said it again when he told me to say it louder. A tear went down my cheek and he called it a good picture.

Four years of that apartment. Four years of a door that locked from the outside.

Graduation day I was twenty-two in a black gown. My phone lit until I could not hold it. The campus screens went white with my face. My voice. My body.

Wealthy stepsister spent four years seducing her brother.

I called him with sweat on the screen.

"Liam. Tell them it is a lie. Tell them you loved me."

"Love you?" His voice was ice. "My mother died because of yours. This is the bill."

"You made me do those things."

"You did them. The whole world can see that now."

"I will tell the truth."

"Who is going to believe the crazy stepsister? I am the one you obsessed over."

The line went dead.

A horn pulled me back into the car. Rain still blurred the lights. My face was wet. I wiped it hard and laughed once, ugly and short. I hated crying more than I hated him, which was not possible, but the body did not take instructions.

Julian's hand covered my knuckles. Warm. Steady. A pulse I could count.

"Breathe," he said.

I did. "I am fine."

"You are shaking."

"I am getting ready." I took my hand back and smoothed my lapel. "Where is he?"

"On his way in from a merger meeting. He still works out of the main house."

"Good. He likes being comfortable."

"He has been CEO for three years. The board likes him."

"They will not."

"He is not soft, Evelyn. He took three firms apart last quarter."

"He taught me how. I just had to live through the lesson."

Julian passed me a thin folder. Offshore accounts. Shell companies with names that sounded like law firms and meant nothing.

"He was always sloppy with the ones he thought no one would open," I said.

"If you leak this, the SEC starts with him."

"The SEC is the first course. I want the company. Then I want him awake for the rest of it. I want him to look at me and know why."

"That is a hard game."

"It is the only one I know."

"The board meets Friday. He plans to announce a media buy."

"He will not get to Friday."

"What first?"

"His gala tomorrow night."

"You will be in a room he owns."

"Then he can watch me walk through it."

The car took the left lane. A black sedan came up even with us in the rain.

"How long to the hotel?" I asked.

"Forty minutes."

"Tell him to go faster."

"We are already doing seventy."

In the other back seat a man sat with his phone lit in his hand. He rubbed the back of his neck like the day had gone on too long. Then he turned toward his window.

Liam.

Five years had cut his face sharper. The suit still did the talking. The arrogance had not learned a new posture.

I leaned forward to give Julian the folder.

"Take this."

A billboard flashed white across my profile.

Liam's eyes caught the glass. His hand locked on the phone. For a second he did not breathe.

I sat back and looked at the road.

Let him wonder if a dead girl could sit in traffic.

The sedan fell back a length. Rain thickened on both panes until his face was only a dark shape and a phone glow.

I should have felt triumph. I felt the old study instead, the way a body remembers a fall. My jaw ached along the plates. I pressed my tongue to the seam until the ache had a location.

Julian watched the side mirror, not me.

"He saw you."

"He saw a profile in bad light. Tomorrow he will tell himself it was a trick. That is useful. Let him argue with his own eyes for a night."

"And if he does not."

"Then the gala will finish the job."

I closed the folder on my knees. Numbers. Shells. Dates. They were cleaner than memory. I could hold them without shaking.

The driver took the exit. Boston was still ahead of us, and so was the house that had taught me what a locked door was worth.
