Six years ago, Rowan Mercer made my grandmother's failing farm feel like a future.

He fixed fences after dark, taught me to read a horse's ears, and hung a brass horseshoe over my door because he said I would always have a way home.

When I told him I was pregnant, I waited for him to say we would figure it out.

By morning, his account told me to get rid of the baby because Mercer Ranch came first.

I left Oklahoma before sunrise and built a life around never needing him again.

Now I am back with my five-year-old son, Jamie, in the farmhouse next door.

Within an hour, Jamie crawls through the fence to feed Rowan's new colt.

Rowan catches him, and they both turn toward the same faint distressed whine before anyone else hears it.

I tell Rowan Jamie belongs to my ex-husband.

Then I cross back for Jamie's forgotten water bottle and hear Diane Mercer through the ranch-office screen door.

“She took the money, Rowan.”

“I never gave Grace money.”

“I did—thirty thousand dollars, and she signed for it.”

“Then if Jamie is mine, she spent six years making sure I would never know.”

"Put the box down, Mom," Jamie called out from the yard. "It's too heavy."

"I've got it, buddy," I grunted, shoving the final carton of art supplies through the front door of Evelyn’s old farmhouse.

My knuckles grazed the brass horseshoe nailed to the doorframe.

"We'll get a place in Tulsa after calving season," Rowan had promised six years ago. He had hammered it in place the same day I told him I was pregnant.

He lied.

Now my children's book contract was dead, rent in the city had spiked, and I was back in the one town I swore I'd never return to. My only goals were fixing the leaky roof and enrolling Jamie in preschool by September. Running into my ex wasn't on the list.

"Sign here, lady," the delivery driver said. He shoved a worn clipboard at my chest.

"Just drop the roofing lumber by the porch," I told him, scrawling my name on the yellow paper. "And watch the flower beds. The soil is soft."

"Sure thing. Need help with anything else?"

"No, we're good."

A sharp whinny pierced the afternoon air.

"Jamie?" I spun around. The yard was empty. The tire swing hung still.

He had squeezed through a rotted hole in the wooden fence dividing my property from Mercer Ranch.

"Jamie!" I sprinted toward the boundary, my shoes slipping on the wet grass.

Through the slats, a frantic chestnut foal reared up. Its hooves slashed the air inches from my son's head. Jamie stood frozen, his small hands clutching a fistful of dry grass.

"Hey!" A tall figure lunged from the shadow of the barn.

Rowan.

Rowan crossed the paddock in three strides.

He caught Jamie around the waist just as the foal struck forward. One hoof clipped the fence rail hard enough to splinter wood. Rowan twisted, taking my son's weight against his chest, and backed out of the animal's reach.

"Easy," he said to the foal, never raising his voice. "Back up."

A ranch hand appeared with a lead rope and guided the trembling animal toward the barn.

I shoved through the broken fence and snatched Jamie from Rowan's arms.

"Are you hurt?" I ran my hands over my son's shoulders, ribs, and head. "Jamie, look at me."

"I'm okay." His eyes were huge. "The baby horse was scared."

"You were inside a horse pasture."

"I wanted to give him grass."

I pulled him against me so hard he squeaked.

Rowan Mercer stood less than six feet away.

Six years had changed the easy softness in his face. He was broader now, sun-browned, with a pale scar cutting through one eyebrow. But his eyes were the same gray I remembered from every stupid promise I had once believed.

"How old is he?" Rowan asked.

My arms tightened around my son. "Old enough to know better than to crawl through fences."

"Mom," Jamie protested.

Rowan's gaze moved from Jamie's face to mine. Calculation sharpened it.

"Grace."

"Thank you for pulling him out," I said. "We'll go."

I turned toward the hole in the fence.

"Wait."

I stopped.

Rowan came closer but stayed on his side of the broken rail. "That section has been rotten since Evelyn got sick. I'll replace it before dark."

"I can replace my own fence."

"It separates our stock from your yard. Half the responsibility is mine."

"I'll pay half the materials."

His jaw shifted. "Fine."

Jamie peeked around my hip. "Do you own all the horses?"

"Most of them," Rowan answered.

"Do they all make different sounds?"

Rowan blinked. "What do you mean?"

"The brown baby makes a high click when he walks."

Rowan looked toward the foal being led away. "You heard that from here?"

Jamie nodded. "His left foot sounds funny."

He walked to the foal, lifted the front hoof, and ran a thumb around the shoe. A loose nail clicked against the metal.

Rowan used to hear tiny changes in hoofbeats before anyone else at Mercer Ranch. He called it his useless superpower. I had spent five years pretending Jamie's same sensitivity was just a quirk.

When he returned to the fence, his eyes stayed on my son.

"What's your name, buddy?"

I answered first. "Jamie."

My son frowned at me. "I can tell him."

"Then tell him."

"Jamie Holloway," he announced. "I'm five. Almost six."

I lifted Jamie into my arms.

"Grace," Rowan said again.

"No."

"I didn't ask anything yet."

"You were about to."

A pickup turned into the Mercer drive. The woman behind the wheel didn't need an introduction.

Diane Mercer.

Even through the windshield, I recognized the precise blond bob, the straight posture, and the expression that had once made twenty-year-old me feel like dirt tracked across a clean floor.

She braked beside the barn and stared at us.

Rowan followed my gaze. "You don't have to talk to her."

"I wasn't planning to."

Diane stepped out. "Rowan, the feed supplier is waiting for—"

She saw Jamie.

"So Evelyn's granddaughter finally came back," she said.

"Grace owns the house now," Rowan replied.

Diane's gaze moved over Jamie's face with an attention so sharp it felt invasive. "And this is?"

"My son," I said.

Jamie lifted one hand. "Hi."

Diane didn't answer him.

Rowan stepped between his mother and the fence. "Go handle the feed order."

"Rowan—"

"Now."

Diane's lips pressed into a thin line. She returned to her SUV, but she didn't look at me again.

I carried him back through the fence hole and set him in our yard.

"Inside," I told him. "Wash your hands."

"But the horse—"

"Now, Jamie."

He ran toward the porch.

Rowan stayed by the damaged rail. "Why did you come back?"

"Evelyn left me the farmhouse."

"That isn't what I asked."

"My book contract fell through. Tulsa rent went up. This was the practical option."

"You could have called."

A bitter laugh escaped me. "Six years ago, you told me to handle the problem myself. I learned."

His face hardened. "I never told you that."

I stared at him.

He held my gaze. "I came here the morning after you told me you were pregnant. Evelyn said you had already left."

"Don't rewrite it now."

"I'm not."

"You sent the message."

"What message?"

The screen door banged behind me as Jamie ran back outside, wet hands dripping onto his shirt.

"Mom! The kitchen ceiling has a brown spot."

I looked toward the house. A dark stain had spread above the back window.

I pointed at Rowan. "Stay on your side of the fence."

Then I turned to Jamie. "Show me the ceiling."

As we crossed the yard, Rowan called after me.

"Grace, whatever you think I sent, keep it."

"Because I want to see it."

Thunder rolled beyond the hills.

I looked up at the first fat drops striking Evelyn's old tin roof and knew the house wasn't the only thing about to start leaking.
