Coming home to Oklahoma meant an affordable place to live, not facing the cowboy who broke her heart. Rowan notices too much—the boy's ease with horses, the timing, the name on a school form. She's hidden the truth ever since he told her to end the pregnancy. Now his mother claims she took $30,000 to disappear. When a tornado forces them into close quarters, Jamie overhears a devastating argument about whether he was ever wanted. She can withstand Rowan's hatred, but she refuses to let her son inherit that painful lie.

Chapter 3

Grace's POV

"You don't get to use that question to buy a yes," I told Jamie, grabbing his small shoulder and steering him toward the porch.

"But he didn't answer," Jamie protested, his sneakers dragging across the dirt.

"Inside. Now." I refused to look back at Rowan.

The heavy silence from the driveway followed us all the way into the house.

At two o'clock the next afternoon, the county sirens blared.

The sky turned a bruised, unnatural purple. Wind tore shingles off the farmhouse roof, hurling them against the windows before I even grabbed the emergency radio. The school shelter was three miles away. We would never make it.

"Jamie, grab your shoes!" I yelled over the roaring wind.

I yanked the heavy floor hatch open in the pantry. Footsteps slammed onto the front porch. Rowan kicked the front door open, dropping a heavy metal toolbox and a stack of brackets onto the floorboards.

"Down!" he barked, shoving me toward the dark stairwell.

"I can walk," I snapped.

He ignored me, scooping Jamie up and taking the wooden steps two at a time. Rowan reached up and pulled the heavy doors shut above us, plunging us into absolute blackness.

The ground above shuddered. Dust rained down on my hair.

Jamie whimpered. His small fingers clamped around my left hand. A second later, he reached across the narrow space and grabbed Rowan's right hand.

We sat in a tight circle on the dirt floor while Rowan kept one shoulder braced beneath the hatch, ready to hold it if the warped frame shifted. The shape of us looked like a family, which was exactly what I had spent six years refusing to imagine.

Rowan shifted his weight in the dark, pulling Jamie closer to his chest.

"Sit by my knee, Jamie," I ordered, tugging my son's arm. "Give him space."

"He's fine right here," Rowan countered, his voice rumbling near my shoulder.

"Move to my knee," I repeated sharply. I needed the physical distance. I needed the boundary.

Jamie shuffled through the dirt and leaned against my leg, but he didn't let go of Rowan's hand.

Thunder cracked, shaking the wooden beams above our heads.

"We hear the sound the horse hasn't made yet," Jamie whispered over the noise.

I froze.

"Rowan hears it too," Jamie continued, his voice trembling in the dark. "Does that make me like my dad?"

Rowan didn't claim the title. He squeezed Jamie's fingers. "Count your breaths, kid. One, two."

I stared into the pitch black. Gray eyes. An August birthday. An instinct for frightened animals. Miles's name could no longer cover the truth.

"Just give me one answer, Grace," Rowan said. His tone cut through the heavy, dusty air. "Were you already carrying him when you packed your bags?"

My throat tightened. "Yes."

Rowan didn't yell. He didn't demand an apology. Instead, I felt him slowly slip his hand out of Jamie's grip. The rustle of his denim jacket echoed in the small space as he backed against the cold dirt wall. He retreated from the boy he suddenly knew was his.

An hour later, the wind died down. Rowan pushed the hatch open, letting pale daylight flood the stairs.

We climbed up into the destroyed kitchen. Rowan walked out the front door first. I followed, holding Jamie tightly against my hip.

Diane stood at the end of the driveway. Her polished sedan sat parked safely away from the fallen branches. She marched straight toward Rowan, ignoring the debris twisting around her expensive shoes.

"I brought the proof," Diane snapped. She shoved a piece of paper into Rowan's chest. The original thirty-thousand-dollar clinic receipt.

She turned her sharp glare on me. "You weren't this principled when you took the money."

"That signature is forged," I shot back, stepping between her and Jamie. "My loop always hooks back."

"You took the money, Grace," Diane said, stepping closer. "Don't play the victim now. You packed your bags the second the transfer cleared."

"I never saw a dime of that money," I said, glaring at her. "Check the routing numbers. Check the accounts."

Diane let out a harsh, mocking laugh. She reached into her leather purse and pulled out a printed sheet of paper. "Was 'Fine. I'll leave.' forged too?"

Rowan snatched the printout. I saw the text bubbles. It was only my final reply.

"You cropped out his messages," I said, my voice rising. "You cut out the part where he told me to get rid of the kid."

Rowan held up the crumpled printout. "This matters. You told her I sent that text, Diane?"

Diane didn't flinch. "I protected this family. She was a liability."

"She was carrying my child!" Rowan yelled, the sound echoing across the empty yard.

"She kept him a secret for five years!" Diane yelled back. "Look at her right now. She's still lying."

Rowan crushed the paper in his fist. He stepped into my space, his eyes blazing.

"If I didn't send the first message, why didn't you call to confirm?" he demanded. "Five years, Grace. You lied for five years over a text message."

"I called you three times!" I yelled. "You never answered!"

"Because I didn't have my phone!" Rowan fired back, throwing the crumpled paper onto the dirt. "You stole my son from me because you couldn't wait twenty-four hours for a real conversation."

"You let your mother run me out of town!"

"Adults don't want kids."

The small voice didn't come from us.

I spun around.

Jamie stood by the porch steps. His face was pale. He clutched the crumpled yellow campout flyer in his fist.

"Jamie," I started, reaching out.

"You lied," he whispered, staring at Rowan. "You said you didn't know my dad."

Before I could move, Jamie spun around and bolted toward the backyard.

"Jamie, wait!" I screamed.

He ducked through the splintered gap in the cedar fence, his blue jacket flashing toward the open fields of Mercer Ranch.

A low, mechanical wail rose from the county towers as the weather radio warned of a second rotation crossing Mercer Ranch.
