My Son Wore a Tux to My Husband's Wedding Novel Cover

My Son Wore a Tux to My Husband's Wedding

Naomi Reed's reality crumbles when her five-year-old son, Teddy, comes home from Cole's Napa trip dressed in a tiny tuxedo, clutching rose petals and a candy that reads 'Daddy & Bianca.' Cole insists the vows meant nothing—it was never legal—but he expects Naomi to remain his wife for the family trust while Bianca takes the ceremony and Teddy as ring bearer. She chooses divorce, resurrects her theater-lighting career, and refuses to let her son carry adult burdens. As Cole realizes money can't restore the woman he erased, Naomi discovers a life that answers to no one.

Chapter 3

"I need the asset inventory signed by noon," I said.

I slid the printed spreadsheet across the kitchen island. The paper made a sharp scratching sound against the granite.

Cole didn't touch the document. He kept his back to me, pulling a carton of milk from the refrigerator. He turned to our son, offering him a forced, overly bright smile.

"Mommy just needs a few days to cool off," Cole told Teddy. He poured the milk into a green plastic bowl, splashing a few white drops onto the counter. "She's having big feelings right now. Sometimes adults need a timeout."

I stopped zipping my laptop bag. My hands hovered over the black canvas.

"Mommy is going to live in another house," I said. I walked around the island and crouched next to Teddy's stool so we were exactly eye level. "But I am still your Mommy. We will see each other according to a calendar."

Teddy dropped his spoon. The metal clattered against the granite, loud in the tense kitchen. The color drained from his cheeks, leaving him pale and wide-eyed.

"Is it because I showed the wedding pictures to my teacher?" Teddy asked. His voice shook.

"No, sweetie," I started.

Cole slammed the milk carton onto the counter. The plastic cracked. "Look what you did. You're terrifying him over a tantrum. Are you happy now?"

I stood up. I pointed directly at Cole's chest. "You answer him. Tell your son why his mother is leaving."

"Naomi, stop," Cole warned. He crossed his arms.

"Answer him," I demanded. I kept my voice steady, refusing to raise it. "Tell him the truth."

Cole shifted his weight from his left foot to his right. He looked at Teddy, then down at the milk spreading across the counter.

"Daddy made a bad choice," he said at last.

Teddy's face crumpled. "The wedding?"

Cole swallowed. "Yes."

"Did I make Mommy know?"

"No." Cole forced the word out. "I made Mommy know because I chose to have the wedding. You didn't cause it."

I watched him say it. He looked miserable, but misery wasn't accountability. It was only the first sentence of it.

Teddy rubbed both fists against his eyes. "Are you still married to Bianca?"

"No," I answered before Cole could find another technicality. "Daddy was never legally married to Bianca. He had a ceremony with her while he was already married to me."

Cole flinched at the plain language.

"Is Mommy still married to Daddy?" Teddy asked.

"For now," I said. "The court paperwork takes time."

He looked at Cole. "Can you say sorry and make it go back?"

Cole reached for him, then stopped when Teddy pulled his elbows tight against his body.

"I'm sorry," Cole said. "But some things don't go back just because someone apologizes."

For once, he didn't make me the cruel parent who refused to forgive.

I stood and slid the asset sheet toward him again. "Sign by noon. Leah needs the inventory before she files the temporary financial order."

Cole looked at the columns: winery shares, retirement accounts, vehicles, household property, my studio equipment, the family home.

"You are really moving today."

"Yes."

"This is Teddy's house."

"It is also the house where you taught him to lie to me."

"Where are you taking him?"

"I'm not taking him anywhere today. He stays here tonight under the temporary schedule. I will pick him up after kindergarten tomorrow."

Cole stared at me. "You're leaving without him?"

"I am leaving the house, Cole. I am not leaving my son."

The distinction mattered enough that I made him hear every word.

By ten-thirty, my car was packed with two suitcases, my lighting samples, my laptop, and three banker boxes of personal records. I left the furniture, the wine collection, the art we had bought together. Leah had told me not to strip the house before the inventory was complete, and I wasn't giving Cole an excuse to turn a clean separation into an accusation.

Teddy followed me to the driveway carrying his dinosaur backpack.

"I packed pajamas," he announced.

I crouched beside him. "You stay with Daddy tonight. Tomorrow is my night."

His mouth pulled down. "But you said you were going to another house."

"I am. And you will have a room there too."

"Can I see it?"

"Tomorrow."

He nodded, but his eyes stayed wet.

I opened the trunk and took out a small plastic case. Inside were duplicates of his inhaler, school medication form, insurance card, and the stuffed fox he had slept with since he was two.

"This fox is coming with me," I told him. "Your dinosaur stays here. That way both houses have something that belongs to you."

Teddy considered the logic. "Can the fox sleep in my new bed before me?"

"Absolutely."

Cole stood on the porch, arms folded. "You already rented a place?"

"Leah's client owns a furnished apartment near Bayview Theatre. Month-to-month."

His eyes narrowed. "Near the theater?"

"Near my job."

"You haven't worked full-time there in years."

"I start this week."

That silenced him.

For most of our marriage, I took project contracts around Cole's winery calendar. I designed tasting rooms at midnight, edited cue sheets after Teddy went to sleep, and turned down touring work because somebody had to be home when Cole entertained investors. The Bayview job wasn't a hobby I was returning to. It was the career I had kept alive in pieces.

Cole came down one step. "You can't build a custody schedule around theater hours."

"I already built one around harvest seasons, board dinners, wine festivals, and your trips to Napa."

"That's different."

"Only because my work was the thing we always moved."

I got into the car.

At the apartment, the quiet hit first. No wine cases stacked near the mudroom. No Mercer family photographs. No second adult's schedule taped over mine on the refrigerator.

I put Teddy's stuffed fox on the small twin bed in the second bedroom. Then I opened my laptop at the kitchen table and joined a video meeting with Sarah, Bayview's stage manager.

"We still need you for the fall revival," Sarah said. "Adrian wants you on the lighting overhaul starting Monday."

"I can start tomorrow."

She blinked. "Tomorrow?"

"My availability changed."

"Then tomorrow it is." She paused. "One warning. We have a kindergarten tour coming through during tech rehearsal on Thursday. Thirty kids, five parent volunteers, maximum chaos."

I almost smiled. "I can survive thirty kindergarteners."

My phone buzzed before the call ended.

A message from Ms. Davis, Teddy's teacher, appeared on the screen.

Bayview Theatre field trip confirmed for Thursday. Parent chaperone assigned: Cole Mercer.

I read the line twice.

The first place Cole would see me after I stopped being his wife was the one place he had spent seven years treating as a hobby.

I typed back to Sarah.

Keep the tour on my schedule.
