Chapter 3

"Did you touch the lunch tray they brought in?" I asked, pushing off the plaster wall of the Council corridor.

Kai stepped out of the family room. He didn't meet my eyes. He fixed his vision on the brass door handle.

"Sophie says I don't have to answer questions that make me uncomfortable," he recited.

The words sounded rehearsed, flat, and perfectly enunciated. It was a brand new boundary, drawn right down the middle of the hallway.

I kept my hands at my sides. I didn't reach out to smooth his collar. I didn't push for an answer about the sandwiches.

"If your chest aches or your temperature spikes, you can call Dr. Silva directly," I told him, keeping my tone perfectly even. "You don't need to ask me first. You don't need my permission to get medical help."

Kai shifted his weight. He glanced over his shoulder at me, a flicker of genuine confusion crossing his face. My sudden retreat unsettled him. Before he could speak, Sophie placed a manicured hand on his shoulder and steered him down the hall.

Ronan leaned against the opposite wall, crossing his arms over his chest. "You finally learned to give him space."

I looked at my husband. He actually believed his own words. Every action I took now, whether stepping forward to care for my son or stepping back to give him room, became raw material for Sophie's clipboard. I stopped trying to prove my worth in a game where she wrote the rules.

An hour later, we sat in the temporary meeting room.

"Listen to the audio," Sophie instructed the examiner.

She tapped the spacebar on her laptop. Kai's muffled crying filled the cramped space.

"You can be mad, but the rules won't change tonight," my recorded voice sounded through the speakers, muffled by a closed wooden door.

Sophie paused the clip. "This is classic withdrawal of affection as punishment. Locking a distressed child in isolation."

I slid a stamped piece of paper across the metal table.

"That is the front desk sign-in sheet from the community center," I said to the Council examiner sitting at the head of the table. "Look at the timestamp. Twenty minutes after that video was taken, Kai and I walked into the parent-child agility training. I didn't isolate him. I gave him time to calm down before we left the house."

The examiner adjusted his spectacles, scanning the document. "This provides context, Aria. However, three separate incidents of high-stress interaction still warrant a formal review."

Ronan didn't ask Sophie why she cut the first half of the video. He didn't ask about the argument that led to the closed door.

"The Council needs to hear from the boy," Ronan said, addressing the examiner. "Let Kai express his residential preference on the record."

I stared at Ronan's profile. I had spent the last three days waiting for him to realize what Sophie was doing. Sitting in this cold room, I finally stopped expecting him to hit the brakes.

They brought Kai back into the room. He stood between Ronan's chair and the doorway.

"Kai," Sophie said, her tone soft and entirely manufactured. "If you had the choice, who would you rather live with?"

Kai looked at Ronan. He looked at Sophie's encouraging nod. Finally, he looked at the floor.

"I want to live where people don't get mad when I say no," Kai mumbled.

The silence in the room stretched tight. I didn't beg him to change his mind. I didn't defend my anger.

"If I stop reminding you to take your medicine, Kai," I began, making sure he looked up and met my gaze. "If I stop managing your shift training, and I stop checking your forehead for a fever, will you feel that looks more like love?"

Kai's mouth opened slightly. He blinked, entirely stumped by the question.

"That is emotional pressure," Sophie snapped, stepping between us.

"Don't force the kid into a corner just so he can comfort you, Aria," Ronan added, his voice hardening into a low command.

I stood up from my metal chair. "I withdraw the question." I looked directly at my son. "Tomorrow morning, you only need to say what you truly believe. You do not need to protect any of the adults in this room."

Kai's lower lip trembled. His expression wavered, caught between the script he had been given and the mother standing in front of him. But he didn't take a single step toward me.

The examiner cleared his throat, gathering his folders.

"The formal custody hearing will commence tomorrow at nine in the morning," the examiner announced. "We will determine primary placement based on Alpha Ronan's application, the provided footage, the counselor's evaluation, and the child's stated preference."

He turned his attention to Ronan. "Because the Silverpine heir is nine years old, he is eligible to sign a Custody Preference Declaration. It holds significant legal weight. It will dictate who controls his primary residence, his education, and his medical decisions."

I left the Council building and drove straight back to the Pack House to pack my hearing files. The hallways felt hollow.

I walked into Kai's bedroom to gather his original medical logs.

The room was perfectly tidy. I stopped at his oak study desk.

A heavy silver Council-issued pen rested on the green blotter. Next to it sat a piece of lined paper.

I picked up the paper. It contained three sentences in Sophie's unmistakable looping handwriting. The last one read: I want Dad and Sophie. I do not want Mom deciding for me anymore.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and snapped a photo of the outline.

The bedroom door creaked open.

Kai stood in the threshold, his backpack slung over one shoulder. He didn't freeze in guilt. He didn't try to explain the paper away.

He marched straight to the desk, slammed his small hand down over the handwritten notes, and glared up at me.

"Mom, are you going to turn the things I say into your evidence too?" he asked.
