Chapter 3

Emma's POV

At exactly two o'clock the next afternoon, I pressed my old plastic keycard against the scanner at Blake & Reed LLP.

The green light flashed, and the heavy glass door unlocked with a quiet click.

"Just put your name on the bottom line, buddy."

Adrian's muffled voice bled through the frosted glass of Conference Room B. I paused in the carpeted hallway, pressing my shoulder against the wall.

Seventeen years ago, I drafted this firm's foundational bylaws on a folding table in a damp basement. The senior partners never bothered to purge my credentials from the security system. I came under the guise of picking up tax documents, but the real target sat on the other side of the glass.

"Do I have to use cursive?" Noah asked.

"Print is fine," Adrian replied. "It's just a standard liability release. The lawyers need it for the trust transfer we talked about yesterday."

My husband was making our seventeen-year-old son sign away his legal protections.

"Why do the lawyers need it?" Noah questioned.

"Because the government likes to take our money," Adrian explained smoothly. "This piece of paper protects your future. It makes sure everything I built stays in our family, instead of going to taxes."

"And the company?" Noah asked.

"Thirty percent," Adrian confirmed, his tone loaded with false camaraderie. "Just like I promised you in the car."

"As long as I keep this from Mom, when I turn eighteen, that thirty percent of the company is all mine, right?"

"Exactly," Adrian said. "Your mother worries too much about every little detail. We don't need to stress her out with corporate restructuring. This is men's business."

"She wouldn't get it anyway," my son stated flatly. "She's just a clueless housewife. All she does is make me do breathing treatments and complain about my screen time."

For eight years, I measured every ounce of medication that went into his lungs. I abandoned a senior partner track, gave up my corner office, and memorized the layout of every pediatric emergency room in the city.

"She means well," Adrian offered, though a chuckle betrayed his amusement. "But you're right. That's why we have to handle the big decisions."

"Vanessa said I can have the new virtual reality headset if I sign this," Noah added eagerly.

"Vanessa is a very generous woman," Adrian replied. "Now, sign the paper, and we'll go get your headset."

I squeezed the edge of my keycard.

A jagged edge sliced straight into the center of my palm.

I swallowed it down.

Instead, the suffocating guilt I carried for a decade simply evaporated.

The boy in that room wasn't the fragile child I sacrificed my life for. He was Adrian's accomplice. He was selling my life's work for a video game.

"Good man," Adrian praised. Paper rustled loudly. "I'll give this to the receptionist to file. Put your jacket on."

I needed to get to the lobby before Adrian came out. Confronting them inside the firm would only alert Adrian's lawyers that I knew about the asset transfer.

I rounded the corner and nearly collided with a woman carrying two steaming cups of coffee.

Vanessa.

She wore a tailored white blazer and a pencil skirt. Her eyes darted from my face to the broken keycard in my hand, then down to the drops of blood welling in my palm.

She didn't gasp.

She shifted the cardboard coffee sleeves, tilting her chin up to look down her nose at me.

"Adrian says you're the perfect wife," Vanessa whispered.

"Looks like he's right," she continued, her gaze lingering on the blood falling from my fingers. "You really don't have to worry about a thing. We have it all handled."

She was testing me. She wanted a scene. She wanted the hysterical, clueless housewife to scream in the middle of a prestigious law firm so Adrian could justify locking me out of the accounts.

I reached into my trench coat pocket and pulled out a folded tissue.

I wrapped it around my bleeding hand, applying pressure to the cut.

"You bought two coffees," I noted, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

Vanessa frowned slightly. "Excuse me?"

"One for my husband," I said, gesturing to the cup in her right hand. "And one for you. Did you forget my son is in there?"

"Noah doesn't drink coffee," she countered, her smile faltering at the edges.

"He likes hot chocolate," I replied, taking a step closer. "If you're going to play stepmother, you should probably learn his order. He throws terrible tantrums when he doesn't get what he wants."

Vanessa's jaw tightened. "I know exactly what Noah wants. He wants a mother who doesn't treat him like a permanent hospital patient."

"Is that what Adrian tells you?" I asked. "That I'm the overbearing nurse and you're the fun escape?"

"I don't need Adrian to tell me anything," Vanessa snapped. "I see the way he looks at you. You're a placeholder, Emma. You keep the house clean while we run the business."

"The business," I repeated. I let the word hang in the air between us. "You mean the shell company registered in Delaware under your brother's address? Or maybe you mean the Overseas Education Trust with Lily Thorne listed as the primary beneficiary?"

Vanessa froze.

"I'm not sure what you're talking about," she lied. Her voice lost its confident edge, dropping into a nervous murmur.

"I think you do," I said softly. "You let Adrian put half a million dollars under your seven-year-old daughter's name to bypass the gift tax ceiling. Did he tell you that makes you an accessory to federal tax fraud, or did he skip that part of the pillow talk?"

"Adrian handles the legalities," Vanessa fired back, trying to regain her footing. "He's the financial expert. He knows what he's doing."

"Adrian is a wealth manager, not a lawyer," I corrected her. I tossed the bloody tissue into a nearby metal trash bin. "I'm the lawyer. And you should ask Adrian what happened to the last associate who tried to forge my signature on a corporate document. It didn't end well for him."

Vanessa opened her mouth, but no sound came out. The arrogant mistress from ten seconds ago was entirely gone, replaced by a panicked assistant realizing she was in over her head.

"You're bluffing," Vanessa finally whispered. "You don't know anything about the corporate accounts. Adrian said you haven't looked at a spreadsheet in years."

"Keep believing that," I smiled. "It makes my job much easier."

"Listen to me, Emma—" Vanessa started, her hands shaking enough to spill a drop of coffee onto the plastic lid.

"No, you listen," I interrupted.

Before I could finish the sentence, the heavy door to Conference Room B swung open.

Adrian stepped into the hallway.

He held a manila folder tucked under his left arm and a single sheet of paper in his right hand.

He turned his head toward the elevator bank, locking eyes directly with mine.
