Chapter 5

I pulled my hand back.

The ten centimeters of empty space between my fingers and my son's shoulder felt permanent. I curled my hand into a fist and let my arm drop to my side.

Noah kept his spine pressed hard against the cinderblock wall. His eyes never left his father. His lips remained slightly parted, stuck on the rehearsed phrase.

I turned away from my son and faced the court-appointed psychologist.

"I will not force him," I said.

Dr. Miller watched me, her pen hovering over her yellow notepad. "Evelyn, we need to establish a baseline for his reactions."

"You have your baseline," I replied. "I am not asking him to hug me. And I will not ask an eleven-year-old to choose sides in a windowless room. That is not fair to him."

Grant let out a long, heavy sigh. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, playing the exhausted parent to perfection. "He is terrified, Evelyn. You can see it."

"I see exactly what is happening," I said.

Dr. Miller set her pen down. She looked at Noah, then back at us. "Let us take a short recess. I need to speak with Noah alone before we proceed with his formal statement."

She stood up and walked over to the corner. She spoke softly to Noah, coaxing him out of the plastic chair. He gripped his green crayon and followed her toward the exit. He did not look back at me.

The heavy wooden door clicked shut.

The lock tumbled into place.

Grant did not waste a single second. He dropped the tired-father act the moment the latch caught. He reached down to his leather briefcase resting against the leg of his chair and snapped the brass locks open.

He pulled out a single sheet of paper and slid it across the scratched laminate table.

Then, he reached deeper into the bag. He pulled out the gold-painted plastic soccer trophy. Noah's trophy. The one our son had proudly carried into the office just two nights ago.

Grant set the plastic base down on the top right corner of the document, pinning it to the table.

"Read it," Grant instructed.

I looked down at the page. Two empty square boxes sat at the bottom, printed in stark black ink.

Next to the first box, the text read: *Petitioner relinquishes claim to 18% marital equity in BrightSeed. Respondent agrees to supervised visitation rights.*

Next to the second box: *Petitioner pursues equity claim. Respondent files immediate motion to suspend all parental contact pending psychological evaluation.*

My chest tightened. I read the words again to make sure my mind was not playing tricks on me.

"You are tying his custody to the company shares," I said.

Grant adjusted his cuffs. "I am offering you a streamlined exit."

"You are holding my son hostage for eighteen percent."

"I am negotiating with a hostile shareholder," Grant corrected. He leaned back in his chair, his posture relaxed. "You sign away the equity, and I let you see him on weekends. With a court monitor present, of course."

"A monitor." I stared at the man I had been married to for twelve years. "I stayed awake for sixty-three nights next to his incubator when he was born ten weeks early. You were at a networking conference in Seattle. I do not need a monitor to see my own child."

"The audio file suggests otherwise," Grant countered.

"The audio is a manufactured lie." I grabbed a cheap plastic pen from the center of the table. I pressed the tip hard against the paper and dragged a thick, dark line through both sentences. The ink tore slightly through the thin page. "I am not trading my child for my property."

Grant watched me ruin his pristine document. He did not look angry. He looked amused.

"You think you have a choice," he said.

"I will prove the recording is clipped," I told him, tossing the pen aside. "I will hire a forensic expert to pull the metadata. I will show the judge exactly what you cut out. I will subpoena your hotel receipts and prove you provoked me to cover your affair."

Grant smiled. It was a small, cold upward tilt of his lips.

"With what money?" he asked.

The question hit me like a physical blow.

My throat went dry.

He had frozen the joint accounts. The reality of my situation crashed over me, suffocating and absolute. I had zero dollars in the checking account. Zero in savings. The credit cards were locked. A forensic audio expert required a retainer. Five thousand dollars. Maybe ten.

I could not even buy a cup of coffee in the lobby downstairs.

"You planned this," I whispered.

"I secured my assets," Grant replied, his tone conversational. "You have no capital, Evelyn. You have no leverage. If we go into that hearing this afternoon, Dr. Miller will testify that Noah recoiled from you in this room. She will submit the audio of your violent outburst. The judge will grant my emergency motion."

I gripped the edge of the table. "You coached him to flinch."

"Prove it," Grant challenged. "Hire an expert. Oh, wait. You can't."

He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table.

"Take the deal," he said softly. "Give up the shares. If you fight me on the equity, I will drag this out until you are bankrupt. And while you are fighting for money you will never get, you will not see Noah. Not for his birthday. Not for his graduation. You will not see him until he is eighteen."

A sharp knock hit the wooden door.

The brass handle turned, and a uniformed bailiff poked his head into the room.

"Mr. and Mrs. Hale," the bailiff announced. "Dr. Miller will begin the child's formal statement in ten minutes. Please remain here until called."

The door shut.

On the wall above the doorframe, a red digital clock glared down at us.

10:00.

A silent flash of the colon.

09:59.

Grant reached into his suit jacket. He pulled out his heavy silver fountain pen. He laid it horizontal on the table, resting the metal casing exactly between the two empty boxes I had just crossed out.

"Choose the shares," Grant whispered, his eyes locking onto mine, "or choose still being able to see him."
