Chapter 2

I suddenly rushed into the delivery room, startling my daughter, who was anxiously waiting to give birth.

"Mom? Why are you here? It's just childbirth; you can go home and wait for your grandchildren," she said, forcing a smile to comfort me.

Seeing her innocent expression filled me with distress and anger; I wanted to pinch her to wake her up, but I couldn't bring myself to hurt her. In my previous life, I hadn’t even had a chance to say goodbye to this silly girl. My eyes welled with tears, and I hurriedly wiped them away, taking her hand in mine.

"Let’s go, Mom has everything arranged. We’re moving to the hospital next door right away."

My daughter looked dazed as I quickly found a wheelchair to take her out. Just then, Paul rushed over, grabbing the wheelchair and asking anxiously, "Mom, you’re fine. Why do you suddenly want to transfer to another hospital?"

I quickly gathered my daughter’s things and replied calmly, "Didn’t you say a C-section at twelve o'clock is ideal? I’ve calculated that the hospital next door is a blessed place, perfect for my grandson to be born there."

Paul forced an awkward smile. "Mom, stop joking. Aren’t you the one who isn’t superstitious? Where are you even going to find a master to calculate auspicious times? You’re not trying to harm anyone, are you?"

I looked at him, furious. "What do you mean? Am I going to harm my grandson? So it’s only okay for you to calculate auspicious times, but not me?"

"Go and complete the discharge procedures immediately. We’re transferring to another hospital now!"

Seeing my agitation, Paul frowned. "Diane's water has broken, and she could give birth at any moment. If we transfer her now, what if something goes wrong on the bumpy road?"

"This is your own daughter and grandson!"

He had the nerve to say that he was so self-righteous!

I sneered at him. "You want her to give birth at any time? Then why wait until twelve o'clock for the C-section? Which doctor agreed to this? Isn’t that a complete disregard for human life?!"

As soon as I linked the issue to Wendy, I noticed Paul’s brows furrow. He quickly changed the subject and turned his attention to Diane.

"Diane, our mother doesn’t understand medical judgment. I can’t allow you to transfer to another hospital right now because I’m afraid you’ll be in danger."

"Think about how I treat you normally. I love you and our child so much; how could I bear to let you get hurt?"

"Mom doesn’t trust me. But if you insist on transferring to another hospital with her, I won’t stop you forcefully."

His words sounded sincere. If I hadn’t witnessed Paul’s fierce and beastly side in my previous life, I might have been deceived by him.

But my daughter didn’t know the truth and thought he was the loving husband he pretended to be. She was genuinely touched and squeezed his hand tightly.

"Paul, I believe you."

Then she turned to me with a well-behaved look. "Mom, Paul is right. The doctor said I’m already five centimeters dilated, and I need to be ready for a C-section at any moment. Transferring hospitals suddenly isn’t realistic."

"And I’m in pain every second. A bumpy road will make it even worse. Mom, please have some compassion for your daughter."

As she spoke, my daughter hugged my waist, looking up at me with pleading eyes.

If it were any other time, I might have softened and agreed, but now a human life was at stake. I pulled my daughter's hand off my waist and said firmly, "No, you must transfer to another hospital immediately. The hospital next door is only a ten-minute drive away. Once you get there, you can catch up with your delivery."

It was now eleven o'clock. In my previous life, my daughter started to give birth at eleven thirty, so we could still make it in time.

I had considered letting her stay here to ease her suffering, but the reality was stark. Wendy had actually allowed her daughter to die in utero so her organs could be harvested. They’d taken her cornea and given it to her son, who was undergoing surgery next door.

This wasn’t something ordinary doctors would do. We couldn’t stay here!

My face had turned pale from anxiety and anger. My daughter had never seen me like this before, and she sensed that something was wrong. She stopped hesitating and prepared to get out of bed and into the wheelchair, but Paul held her down.

"Diane, you just promised me you'd give birth at twelve o'clock. You can’t go back on your word, right?"

I sneered and replied, "It’s the same if we change locations for the C-section at twelve."

At that moment, my daughter comforted Paul, touching his hand. "Mom is right; it’s only a ten-minute journey, and we’ll be there soon."

Paul’s eyes flashed with displeasure, and his voice turned colder. "Diane, you promised to wait here until twelve. What do you mean by going back on your word now?"

"Aren’t you afraid that if you change the place to give birth, it will ruin the child’s fate and turn you into a criminal who indulges in vice in the future?"

Seeing Paul plotting against my daughter, I raised my hand, wanting to slap him.

But I didn’t have time to argue with him now. The most important thing was to transfer my daughter to another hospital for her delivery immediately.

Paul has lost all sense of humanity. His children and wife are mere tools for him to please his first love! Seeing my daughter wavering, he continued to coax her, saying, "As a mother, you want your child to be promising and successful, right? But if you leave now, you'll miss the auspicious time and place. The child could end up as a social outcast in the future. You’d be heartbroken, and your child would suffer even more. It’s better not to give birth!"

The more he spoke, the more outrageous his claims became.

"Don’t listen to him!" I sneered, trying to push my daughter toward the exit, but she grabbed my hand.

"Mom, let’s not transfer to another hospital. The master Paul invited is very powerful. If I change hospitals and the child ends up a murderer, isn’t that just forcing me to die?"

As she spoke, my daughter broke down in tears.

Paul had begun instilling superstitious beliefs in her the moment she became pregnant. A few months ago, when he had always claimed to be busy, he suddenly started staying home more often with his wife. He frequently took my daughter to temples and other places to consult fortune tellers. I’d seen him several times insist that she had to give birth on time, and that no matter how painful it was, she had to endure until then. If she didn’t give birth at the right time, the child would become a murderer.

I had a fierce argument with Paul, determined to take my daughter away. But my daughter, having been thoroughly brainwashed, insisted that this was metaphysics, not superstition, and told me not to worry.

She wanted to give birth to a good child for the Burke family, but they were using this belief to kill her!

I was furious and slapped Paul hard.

"You beast! Transfer Diane to another hospital now!"

His mouth bled from the impact, and half of his face was red and swollen, making him look utterly embarrassed. Finally, he couldn’t contain himself any longer and roared, "Mom! Can you stop making trouble? Diane is your biological daughter—do you want to kill her?! Even if you don’t like me, you can’t be unreasonable at this time, right?"

I glared at Paul, wishing I could cut him into pieces.

"Whoever wants to harm her knows it in their heart. Paul, I don’t have time to deal with you right now. If you don’t get out of my way, don’t blame me for being rude!"
