Chapter 1

It started three days ago. Every time I stepped into the living room, my husband Tyler began to cough. His chest heaved. Red blotches flared across his neck.

Then our fourteen-year-old son, Karter, joined in.

"Mom, please," Karter wheezed this morning, backing away from me toward the balcony windows. His eyes were red and wet. He rubbed his throat raw. "It burns. Whenever you get close, I can't breathe."

I stood in the center of our Manhattan penthouse, holding a plate of warm toast. My chest ached with raw guilt. For months, I had been battling strange dizzy spells, blurred vision, and trembling hands. Now, somehow, my own body had turned into a biohazard to the people I loved most.

My younger sister, Noelle, set down her mug and hurried over to rub Karter’s back. She looked up at me with huge, sorrowful eyes.

"Gigi, it’s getting worse," Noelle said softly, her voice thick with worry. "The doctors still don't know what allergen you're carrying. Maybe... maybe you should stay at the Carlyle for a few days? Just temporarily. For Karter’s sake. And Tyler’s."

Tyler leaned heavily against the kitchen island, gasping for air, his hand pressed over his heart. He didn't look at me. He just nodded weakly.

"Of course," I whispered, shame burning my throat. "Anything for you guys."

I packed one small suitcase. Before I left, I bent down to kiss Karter’s forehead. He flinched hard, slapping a hand over his collarbone and scratching violently. "Don't, Mom! Stop!"

I pulled back, stung, and walked out the door.

By midnight, the Carlyle room felt like a tomb.

My head was pounding. My fingers twitched, a dull numbness crawling up my left arm. That was when I realized I had left my prescription bottle on the penthouse bathroom counter. Without the pills, the dizziness would swallow me whole by morning.

I took a cab back. It was past twelve-thirty.

The penthouse private elevator opened silently into the foyer. The apartment was lit with warm, golden light. I slipped off my flats, stepping onto the plush runner without making a sound.

Then I heard the laughter.

It was light. Bright. Full of easy joy.

I stopped near the archway leading into the great room.

Tyler, Noelle, and Karter were sitting together on the long sectional sofa. Chinese takeout boxes were scattered across the glass table. Tyler was drinking beer, his skin clear and smooth. Not a single red blotch marked his neck.

"No, do it like this," Noelle said, giggling. She nudged Karter playfully. "You have to gasp first, dummy. Like your throat is actually swelling shut. Try it again."

Karter cleared his throat, hunched his shoulders, and let out a dramatic, wheezing choke. His eyes bugged out. Then he broke character and burst out laughing. "Like that, Aunt Noelle?"

"Much better," Tyler said, smiling warmly at him. He took a sip of beer and tossed a thick folder onto the coffee table. "We have the emergency hearing set for next Tuesday. Once the court grants me conservatorship over Genevieve’s assets, the signing authority shifts entirely to my name. Dr. Reeves is ready to sign off on the severe psychiatric decline."

"And the company shares?" Noelle asked, resting her chin on Tyler's shoulder. Her fingers traced his jawline. It wasn't the touch of a sister-in-law. It was familiar. Intimate.

"All of it," Tyler murmured, turning his head to kiss her cheek. "She won't have a cent left to fight us."

Karter shoved a dumpling into his mouth, grinning. "Can I finally turn her craft room into my gaming setup next week, Dad?"

"Whatever you want, buddy," Tyler replied.

I stood frozen in the dark corridor.

I didn't gasp. I didn't cry out.

Ten years of marriage. Ten years of cooking, organizing, ghostwriting Tyler's proposals, and paying off Noelle's tuition while burying my own dreams. It all shattered in four minutes. The warmth inside me didn't break; it calcified. It turned to ice.

I took three quiet steps back, pressed the elevator button, and rode down in complete silence.

In my car in the underground garage, I gripped the steering wheel. I sat there for exactly eleven minutes, watching my knuckles turn bone-white in the dim overhead lights.

Then I pulled out my phone and dialed Allie West.

"Allie," I said when she picked up. My voice was eerily steady, stripped of all tremor. "I need you to listen to me very carefully."

At seven-thirty the next morning, I unlocked the front door and walked into the penthouse.

The three of them were sitting at the dining table. The second the door clicked, panic flashed across Tyler’s face.

Immediately, Karter dropped his fork. He began to hack, wheezing loudly, clutching his throat with both hands. Tyler grabbed his chest, his breath hitching, eyes watering on cue.

"Genevieve!" Noelle gasped, rushing over to flutter her hands around Tyler. "Why are you here? You know how dangerous this is for them!"

I didn't answer.

I walked into the kitchen, poured myself a cup of hot black tea, and carried it back to the head of the table. I sat down. I picked up a piece of dry toast.

I chewed slowly, my eyes locked on Tyler. Then I shifted my gaze to Karter. Then to Noelle.

They kept performing. Karter hacked until his face turned purple. Tyler gagged, pretending to dry-heave into a napkin.

I watched them with flat, unblinking eyes. I didn't say a word. I finished my toast. I drank every drop of my tea.

When I was done, I took my plate to the sink, washed it, and dried it with a linen towel. I grabbed my purse from the counter and walked toward the foyer.

Behind me, the theatrical coughing sputtered out into dead silence. I glanced back once. The three of them were staring at me, frozen, exchanging uneasy glances.

They expected tears. They expected an apology.

Instead, I gave them nothing.

The backlash happened at two in the afternoon.

I returned to the kitchen to collect the remainder of my clothes from the laundry room. Mid-step, a sharp, metallic taste flooded my mouth. The room tilted violently. The walls dissolved into gray noise.

My knees hit the hardwood floor first, then my shoulder. Darkness swallowed me before I could even draw a breath.

When my consciousness flickered back, I couldn't move.

My limbs were lead. But through my half-opened eyes, I saw Noelle.

She wasn't calling for help. She was kneeling on the floor, tearing the seam of her own silk blouse. Then, with deliberate force, she dragged her manicured fingernails across her own cheek, drawing three thin lines of bright red blood.

She kicked over two dining chairs. She scattered my purse across the tiles.

Holding up her iPhone, she switched on the camera, tears instantly flooding her face.

"Please, someone help," Noelle sobbed into the lens, filming my limp body on the floor, then panning to her bleeding cheek. "Gigi just snapped. She attacked me out of nowhere. She’s completely lost her mind."

She ended the video, tapped the screen, and forwarded it to our private family chat and Dr. Reeves.

Across the room, Tyler held his phone to his ear, his voice trembling with rehearsed, frantic grief. "911? Please hurry. My wife... she's had another violent episode. She’s been deteriorating for months. I don't know what she's going to do next."

On the floor, unable to lift a finger, I watched them.

*Let them build the trap,* I thought, letting the dark pull me under again. *Every nail they hammer is one I'm going to drive right back into them.*
