Chapter 1

I went to the Mooncrest clinic for a seven-week ultrasound, planning to tuck the printout beneath Jace's dinner plate that night.

Instead, I stopped in the corridor and watched my ten-year-old son fasten my moonstone bracelet around Olivia's wrist.

"It saved Mom before," Ethan said, fumbling with the silver clasp. "So maybe it'll protect you today too."

Olivia smiled down at him. "That's very sweet."

"Where did you get that?" I asked.

Ethan froze.

Jace stood behind them with his arms crossed. "I told him he could take it. Olivia has another treatment review today. She could use the luck."

I stared at my mate. "That bracelet was my recovery charm. It was the only thing I kept beside me after I spent eleven days unconscious from donating Silver Marrow to Ethan."

Four years ago, Jace had sat beside my hospital bed and sworn nobody would ever ask me for that kind of sacrifice again.

Now he was handing the symbol of that promise to another woman.

Olivia immediately reached for the clasp. "I didn't realize. Mia, I can give it back."

Ethan covered her wrist with both hands. "No. You need it."

The reflex hurt more than I wanted to admit.

"Mia," Dr. Nora Reed called from her office. "Come in."

I followed her and shut the door behind me.

Nora slid a white envelope across the desk. "Pregnancy confirmed. Seven weeks. Everything looks appropriate for this stage."

For one brief second, the world softened.

Then she turned her monitor toward me.

My old donor file filled the screen.

"The Alpha's office accessed your Silver Marrow records at seven this morning," Nora said. "I want you to understand the risk before anyone speaks to you about a second extraction."

My hand tightened around the ultrasound envelope. "Second extraction?"

"Olivia's old spinal injury is degrading her ability to shift. Your marrow profile is compatible with the regenerative treatment they want to try." Nora's expression hardened. "Your first donation caused severe neurological suppression and temporary wolf dormancy. A second procedure could make that permanent."

I looked at the screen. "And the pregnancy?"

"Makes the risk substantially worse. Sedation, magical suppression, blood loss, inflammatory response. Any of those could threaten the pregnancy. I would advise against donation."

"Then put that in writing."

Nora nodded. "I already have."

I pointed to the first page of my chart. "Add that I refuse. Explicitly."

The office door opened before Nora could answer.

Jace walked in with Olivia close behind him.

"I authorized the records pull," he said. "I wanted to know whether it was medically possible before anyone approached you."

"You approached my chart before you approached me."

"Because Olivia's condition is worsening."

Olivia leaned against the doorframe, pale and visibly tired. "I never asked him to pressure you. I would never demand something like this."

Then she lowered her eyes.

"But if it were me," she added softly, "I don't think I could live with myself if someone died because I refused to help."

There it was.

Not a demand. Something cleaner and crueler.

A moral sentence disguised as humility.

"My answer is no," I said.

Jace frowned. "Are you making a medical decision, or are you reacting to Olivia being around the house?"

"She trains Ethan. She eats at our table. She attends his school events when I'm recovering from the first donation. I've tolerated all of that." I held his gaze. "Why do I have to prove I'm not jealous before my no counts?"

"Because this is life or death," Jace said. "Your feelings about her cannot be the deciding factor."

"My body is the deciding factor."

Footsteps slapped against the linoleum.

Ethan rushed into the room and stopped beside Olivia. The moonstone bracelet flashed on her wrist.

"You saved me," he said. "Why could you do it for me but not for her?"

Four years ago, he had woken from surgery, wrapped his tiny fingers around mine, and called me Mom for the first time.

Every instinct in me wanted to comfort him now.

I kept my hands folded in my lap.

"Because what I chose four years ago does not become a permanent claim on my body," I said. "I love you. That doesn't mean anyone gets to spend me twice."

Ethan's face crumpled.

For a moment I saw the six-year-old he had been in that hospital bed: feverish, terrified, too small for the tubes taped to his arms. I had signed the first donor consent before anyone asked twice because the thought of losing him had been unbearable. That choice still mattered to me. What Jace refused to understand was that love did not convert one voluntary sacrifice into an unlimited subscription to my body.

Nora seemed to understand. She moved the tablet toward me instead of toward Jace. "I am documenting that the patient was informed of the risks and declined. No one else can amend that entry."

Jace's mouth hardened, but he said nothing.

He did not come to me.

He stepped backward until his shoulder touched Olivia's arm, then closed his fingers around my bracelet on her wrist.

I stood.

"Nora, send me the refusal form."

"I will."

I walked past Jace, Olivia, and my son without another word.

In the parking lot, I signed the formal refusal on my tablet and emailed it back to Nora. The ultrasound remained folded inside my jacket.

Jace would not be getting his surprise tonight.

I reached for my car keys and realized my phone was missing.

I had left it on Nora's visitor chair.

When I returned, her door was cracked open.

"A seventy-two-hour treatment window does not make Mia your donor," Nora snapped from inside. "Any pressure you apply compromises consent."

Silence.

Then Jace spoke.

"She already did this for Ethan. She's emotional because she feels threatened by Olivia. If I put Ethan in front of her, she'll remember what matters to her."

My pulse went perfectly still.

I did not open the door.

I pulled my backup tablet from my bag, synced it to the phone inside Nora's office, and started recording.

When the audio saved, I uploaded it to an encrypted account Jace knew nothing about.

In the subject line, I typed:

If they refuse to hear my no, I will start leaving evidence.

I hit send.

At that exact moment, the doorknob turned from the inside.
