Chapter 2

The belt finally gave.

I don't know how long it took. Long enough that my wrists had gone from burning to numb. I yanked my hands free, spun around, and my knees nearly gave out.

I already knew before I reached the resuscitation room. I knew from the quality of the silence — the particular absence of urgency that only settles when there is nothing left to fight for.

A doctor was pulling a white sheet up over a small shape on the table. His hands were careful. Gentle. The kind of gentle reserved for things already past help.

"No—" The word was out of me before I'd decided to speak. "No, don't—"

"Mrs. Sterling." A nurse moved into my path, both hands raised, her voice made soft the way voices get when they're carrying something unbearable. "Mrs. Sterling, I'm so sorry—"

I walked past her.

Noah's face was still visible above the sheet. His eyes were closed. He looked like he was sleeping, except for the color of his skin, which was the wrong shade of wrong in a way I will never be able to name and have never stopped seeing.

I stood there.

The cold from the tile floor rose through the soles of my shoes. A machine beeped once in the next room, then went silent. The fluorescent light buzzed its one flat note above me. I stood there looking at my son and could not make myself cry, and that absence was its own kind of damage — a pilot light snuffed so quietly you don't know the house is cold until you've already been freezing for hours.

Then I heard heels on the tile behind me.

Julian came in first. He had his hand at the small of Clara's back, steering her the way you'd steer someone fragile, someone who had actually lost something tonight. She had a small square of white gauze on her index finger, clean and neat, secured with medical tape. One finger.

She was wearing my necklace.

I hadn't seen it up close in months, not since Julian told me he was having it cleaned last spring. A sapphire pendant on a white-gold chain, a gift from my grandmother. The kind of blue that goes almost black in low light. Under these fluorescent strips, it was very blue.

"Evelyn." Julian's voice had the particular flatness he used when he needed to sound reasonable in front of witnesses. "The doctors said there was nothing they could do. His heart was already—"

"She means," Clara added softly, "that if you'd been watching him — a four-year-old near a glass table—"

"Don't." My voice surprised me. Very quiet. Very steady.

He stopped. Not because I'd asked. Because something in my face made him.

I looked at Clara's bandaged finger. At the necklace. At the white sheet and the small shape beneath it.

Then I reached into my bag.

My phone was there — screen cracked, the case smeared with Noah's blood where I'd grabbed it in the car. I'd been trying to call Julian. All the way to the hospital, over and over. Nineteen missed calls. He hadn't picked up once.

I unlocked the screen.

There was a number I hadn't dialed in five years. I'd kept it the way you keep certain things — not because you plan to use them, but because some part of you understands you might need to, someday, when everything you thought was solid gives way at once.

It rang twice.

"Evelyn Sterling." The voice on the other end was measured, older, the voice of a man who had spent decades knowing precisely what he was worth. "I've been wondering when you'd call."

Behind me, I heard Julian take a step forward.

I turned my back to him.

"Mr. Hargrove," I said. "I need to begin proceedings. Tonight."

A brief pause. Then:

"The will has already gone into effect, Miss Sterling. You can reclaim controlling interest in Vance Medical Group whenever you're ready."

The line hummed quietly between us.

Julian had gone very still. I could feel it without looking — the particular stillness of a man who has just registered that the floor beneath him is not the floor he thought it was.

I kept my eyes on Noah's face. The small, perfect curve of his cheek. The way his lashes rested against his skin.

"I'm ready," I said.
