My Son Branded Me a Murderer

For ten full years, he never let up. Not a single day.

His grades had crawled up from the bottom of the class to the middle, then from the middle to the very top.

All through high school, he held the number one spot in his year without ever slipping.

In every practice test, he aced the science sections almost perfectly, and his total score outran the second-place student by dozens of points.

His teachers would clap him on the shoulder and call him a sure thing for top SAT scorer.

His classmates looked at him the way you'd look at some incredible miracle.

I was so happy for him too.

All this time I'd believed he had grown up, that he understood now, that he had learned to take responsibility for his own life.

But it turned out he had spent ten years of effort honing himself into the sharpest possible blade.

All so that today, he could drive it straight into me.

The police hadn't come alone. A crowd of reporters and online streamers had rushed in with them.

Now every camera was trained on me. Some were live-streaming, some were pushing microphones at my face.

"Ms. Henson, your son wrote all of this in his exam essay. Do you have anything to say about it?"

"We've heard your husband vanished suddenly ten years ago and has never been found. Is it true that you killed him?"

"Your son was the favorite to be top SAT scorer, yet he chose to throw away the SATs just to expose your crime with his own hands. How does that make you feel?"

"Can you tell us why you murdered your husband?"

Each reporter's question was sharper than the last.

The livestream was exploding, the viewer count breaking a hundred thousand, the comments scrolling by uglier by the second.

It was as though everyone had already decided I was the woman who'd killed her own husband.

I lifted my eyes to the cameras and said, evenly,

"It's just an essay a kid scribbled down. No proof, nothing behind it. And you all actually believe it?"

The words had barely left my mouth when a voice cut up out of the crowd.

"Paul has always been honest. He'd never lie."

"I believe every word he said is true!"

The one speaking was my mother-in-law.

Leaning on Nicole James's arm, she came slowly out of the crowd, her eyes red-rimmed and full of hatred as she glared at me, then turned to address everyone there.

"I'm Sara Henson's mother-in-law."

"Ten years ago is the last time I saw my son, Oscar James."

"I'd call him, and his phone was always off. I'd text him, and no one ever answered."

"Back then I asked Sara what was going on, and she told me my son had gone abroad for work, that he'd changed his number, that he was very busy."

"It never sat right with me. My son was devoted from the time he was little. No matter how busy or worn out he was, he always made time to come see me, and when he truly couldn't, he'd at least call to ask after my health."

"There's no way he would go ten years without contacting me."

"So I believe what Paul says. My son must have been murdered by Sara Henson!"

Nicole, just as furious, glared at me and chimed in.

"That's right. I came by more than once looking for my brother, but Sara always blocked the door and wouldn't let me in. She's obviously got something to hide!"

At that, Captain Gray's brow furrowed hard. He turned to my son and asked, his face grave,

"Paul, the killing and the whole sequence of the crime you wrote in your essay. How do you know all that?"

My son raised his eyes and looked at me, a long, deep look, then said steadily,

"That night, ten years ago. I saw it with my own eyes."

The whole place went silent in an instant.

Everyone and every camera turned to my son, waiting for him to tell the truth of that night.

With all eyes on him, my son clenched his fists and laid out what happened that night, word by word.

"On the night of November twentieth, ten years ago, I was asleep. Half-awake, I heard my parents fighting."
