Chapter 4

Leighton Turner stared down at the photo on her phone, her fingertips going colder by the second. Jazlyn sat in a hospital hallway in nothing but a thin gown, a light jacket draped over her shoulders. Behind her stood a figure with no face visible—just a pearl bracelet, unmistakable. Leighton recognized it instantly: Nataly Harris’s wrist.

The screen lit up again. [Want the eighty grand? Come to The Nightfall Club. Don’t tell Logan Jackson.]

The dorm buzzed with whispers. The forum hadn’t slowed down, and her roommate Ashley stood by the desk, mockery barely hidden in her voice. “Why so quiet? Aren’t you Logan’s girlfriend now? Eighty grand is pocket change to him.”

Leighton turned off her phone and looked up. Ashley’s smirk faltered under her steady stare. People always assumed Leighton was timid because she never fought rumors or picked fights. Days in class. Nights at her part-time job. She spoke only when she had to.

But right now, her eyes were sharp with resolve. “Ashley.”

Ashley crossed her arms, her smile turning forced. “What?”

“If you keep dragging my mom and my sister into this, I’ll report you for spreading lies.”

The room went dead quiet. Leighton shoved her keys and ID into her bag, grabbed a jacket, and walked out.

Ashley grumbled behind her, “Who are you kidding? You’re going to see Logan.”

Leighton ignored her. Seeing Logan wasn’t the plan. It wasn’t even something she wanted. But when she reached the dorm entrance, the rain was still coming down. The streetlamp turned the night into an old black-and-white film, rain falling in silver threads.

Logan stood under the streetlamp with a black umbrella, coat hanging open, every inch the mysterious figure in the night. A young man stood beside him, holding a thermal bag, his expression complicated.

The young man noticed her first. He nudged Logan and whispered, “Mr. Jackson, she’s here.”

Logan’s gaze found Leighton. She stopped at the top of the stairs, instinct flaring. Why was he here? Was someone following her?

As if he could feel her unease, Logan handed the umbrella to the young man. He hurried up the stairs and held it out to her. “Miss Turner, please. You’ll get soaked.”

Leighton hesitated. He smiled, earnest. “I’m Elliott Hughes, Logan’s assistant. I’m not here to scare you.”

She gave him another look. Elliott held out the umbrella again, lowering his voice. “We’re not here to intrude. We’ve been waiting twenty minutes, letting the cold sober us up.”

Her grip eased, and she took it.

Logan stayed in the rain—no pressure, no demand for an explanation. It wasn’t what she’d expected. For all his imposing presence earlier, he just waited. Letting her choose.

She came down the steps under the umbrella.

Elliott handed her the thermal bag. “The hospital bill’s been handled. The eighty grand wasn’t from Logan—I pulled it from the company’s emergency fund.”

He spoke like he was reading from a contract. “If you’d rather owe me than him, I’m low-income and a very gentle debt collector. Happy to set you up on an installment plan.”

Leighton blinked, thrown by the offer.

Logan shot Elliott a cool look. Elliott shut up and stepped aside.

Leighton turned to Logan. “About the hospital fees...”

“Don’t be so quick to refuse,” he said, gentle but firm. “Your sister is still in the hospital. Nataly’s been there too. You need money and time—right now.”

Leighton hated having her struggles laid out like that. But Logan wasn’t trying to control her or pity her. He was just stating facts. “You can pay it back little by little. Focus on getting your sister.”

Leighton stayed quiet, weighing her next move.

Logan opened the car door and let her decide.

She hesitated for only a second before climbing in. She couldn’t gamble with Jazlyn’s safety.

They headed for the hospital. The car’s heater slowly brought feeling back to Leighton’s cold fingers. In the passenger seat, Elliott tried to make himself invisible.

Logan sat beside her, leaving a respectful amount of space between them.

Another message from Nataly came in.

[Why aren’t you here yet?]

[Leighton, isn’t your sister the timid type?]

Leighton’s grip tightened on the phone.

Logan reached over without ceremony, plucked the phone from her hand, read the messages, and gave it back. “Don’t answer.”

Leighton couldn’t help herself. “How did you know she’d contact me?”

Logan leaned back, eyes on the window. “Nataly’s the type who can’t stand losing. If she feels cornered, she’ll use Jazlyn as leverage.”

“She knows you’re strapped for cash. And she knows your first instinct isn’t to run to me.”

Leighton’s heart stuttered.

Logan’s voice stayed calm, like he was explaining a problem he’d already solved. “Leighton, she looks at your soft spots and sees openings.”

“It’s not your fault.”

The words hit somewhere deep. Leighton was used to taking the blame. Jazlyn’s mistakes, her mother’s failing health, her father’s financial disasters—she’d spent years carrying all of it alone.

And now, for the first time, someone was telling her it wasn’t her fault.

She turned to the window, eyes burning at the corners.

“It’s not that I don’t want to ask you for help.”

Logan looked at her.

“I just don’t know if our kind of relationship means I’m allowed to.”

For a moment, the car went silent.

Elliott barely dared to breathe.

Logan’s throat bobbed. “It does.”

He said it like a promise. “You’re my girlfriend. You can come to me with anything.”

Warmth spread through Leighton’s chest as the hospital lights came into view.

She stepped out of the car.

Logan was already there, umbrella up. When a delivery rider came flying past, his arm came around her on instinct, shielding her—carving out a dry little space in the rain.

She glanced up at him.

“Watch where you’re going,” he murmured.

She fixed her eyes on the path ahead, her heartbeat thrown off rhythm.

In the hospital corridor, Jazlyn sat alone on a chair. No sign of Nataly. A nurse said a pretty girl had stopped by, left a brown envelope, and gone. Inside was eighty grand in cash.

Leighton didn’t touch it. First, she made sure Jazlyn was all right, then walked her back to the room.

Jazlyn flinched the second she saw Logan.

Leighton softened her voice. “Don’t be scared.”

Logan noticed Jazlyn’s unease and kept his distance. Leighton noticed that, too.

Elliott handed Leighton the receipt. “Miss Turner, the expenses are settled. Here’s the paperwork. I’ve logged it as an advance—just need your signature.”

He sounded like an accountant who’d done this a thousand times.

Relief trickled through her as she signed. She’d pay it back. Somehow.

When she finished, Logan asked, “What about the money Nataly left? What are you going to do with it?”

Leighton looked at the brown envelope. She didn’t blink.

“I’m reporting it.”

A smile tugged at Logan’s mouth, approval flickering in his eyes. “Aren’t you afraid?”

Leighton pulled out her phone. “I am.”

She looked up at him. “But I can’t always be.”

Logan studied her for a long beat. Her face was pale, but her eyes never wavered.

He remembered her years ago, that same stubborn look in her eyes as she bandaged his burns after the fire, hands shaking. Even then, she’d pressed a little orange candy into his palm and told him to suck on it if the pain got too bad.

Logan dropped his gaze and shoved the memory down.

Leighton called the police.

Before the line connected, Logan said quietly, “Leighton.”

He stood beside her, voice low and steady. “You don’t have to carry this alone. Not this time.”

Her fingers tightened around the phone as she reported it.

When the police arrived to pull the surveillance footage, Jazlyn woke up. Her first words weren’t for her sister.

She looked straight at Logan and spoke.

“I’ve seen you before.”
