Chapter 3

"Tell me Victor's exact terms," I demanded, keeping the camera lens squarely on his face.

Cole did not flinch. He sat on the edge of the therapy table, his broad shoulders casting a long shadow across the rubber floor.

"Eighteen million dollars in corporate damages and a direct criminal referral to the local prosecutor," Cole answered, his tone terrifyingly calm. "That is what Victor drafted the morning you handed those portal logs to player safety."

My thumb tightened against the focus ring. The hard plastic dug into my skin. "So you lied on live television to kill the lawsuit."

"I stood at that podium and called you a disgruntled liar so Victor would bury the legal filings," Cole shot back. His voice rose, bouncing off the metal equipment cabinets. "If I admitted the drugs were real, he would have dragged you into a federal investigation for data theft. I kept you out of prison."

"You got me fired." I stepped around the table, forcing him to track my movement. "You sent a mob of crazed fans to my apartment building. I had to pack my entire life into three cardboard boxes at two in the morning while strangers screamed threats through my windows. Someone shattered my car windshield with a brick."

Cole dropped his gaze to the floor. "I handled the immediate legal threat. The network was going to feed you to the wolves anyway."

"You left me with eighty-four thousand, three hundred dollars in legal bills just to fight the network's ethics complaint," I fired back. "I spent the last six months cutting discount mattress commercials in a damp basement."

"You are not in a cell," he argued, his head snapping up.

"Real protection is giving me a choice." I lowered the lens an inch, framing his rigid jaw. "You destroyed my reputation first, then declared it a rescue mission. You took away my agency, Cole. What did you sign nine days after that broadcast?"

He broke eye contact, staring at the blank wall behind my shoulder. "I stabilized the team."

"You stabilized his profit margins." I stepped closer, closing the distance between us until my sneakers bumped the base of the table. "I just filmed four fresh needle marks on your knee. The deep muscle stimulator dial sat at eighty-two. I have Priya's seventy-two-hour rest mandate crossed out in black ink on that clipboard."

"It is just standard maintenance."

"Admit you are training on a shredded joint."

"I am doing my job."

"You are letting Victor break you in half."

Cole pushed himself off the table. His right leg hit the floor, and a sharp wince flashed across his features before he masked it. He towered over me, his bare chest heaving.

"Is this about journalistic ethics, Sloane?" Cole asked, stepping into my space. "Or are you just furious that I chose the championship over your demands?"

I reached out, aiming for the small black lapel microphone clipped to his shirt collar. I intended to unpin it, to cut his audio feed to the network truck entirely.

Before my fingers could pull the plastic clip free, Cole's hand shot out. His large fingers clamped around my wrist.

The sudden grip halted my movement. We stood inches apart. The heavy camera rig rested on my shoulder, the built-in microphone picking up the ragged, uneven rhythm of his breathing. The sharp scent of antiseptic and eucalyptus soap radiated off his skin, a ghost from a life we used to share.

"Are you afraid the audience will hear?" Cole asked, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register. "Or are you afraid to admit the truth yourself?"

I did not pull away. I leaned toward the camera's internal mic.

"I admit I would rather you hate me than watch you die on national television."

His grip loosened. His thumb swept once across my pulse point before he caught himself.

"Thirteen months ago," I said, my voice perfectly steady, "I backed up forty-seven minutes of audio from your kitchen onto a 128-gigabyte memory card."

Cole stared at my mouth, tracking the words as they formed.

"I only handed forty-seven pages of text logs to the safety committee," I continued, making sure the camera kept rolling. "I never sold a single second of your actual voice to the network."

"I know," Cole replied quietly.

"Do you?" I twisted my wrist, slipping completely free from his hold. "That audio contains Priya calling you at midnight, begging you to stop the unapproved painkiller injections. It contains you ordering me to open your logged-in medical portal. If I release that tape, it proves the drugs are real."

"Then release it," Cole challenged.

"If I do, it triggers a league investigation that ruins Priya's career for knowing about the abuse, ends your season, and puts me in jail for unauthorized access."

"You would never burn Priya," Cole stated. "She tried to help me when no one else would."

The certainty in his tone hollowed out my chest.

"You gambled on my guilt," I said.

"Sloane, I did what I had to do to keep us all above water."

"You knew I wouldn't sacrifice her," I cut him off, the realization cementing in my chest. "You knew I would never throw an innocent trainer under the bus to save myself. You didn't just lie on television to protect me. You used my loyalty to Priya to guarantee my silence."

Cole did not deny it. He had mapped my moral boundaries and traded my ethics like a team asset.

He reached up and adjusted the lapel microphone, pinning it securely back onto his collar. He smoothed the fabric down, preparing to go back on the record.

A heavy fist pounded against the wooden door.

"Wrap the shoot, Sloane!" Victor shouted from the hallway, his muffled voice carrying through the thick wood. "Medical time is over. Get the gear out of there."

Naomi's voice crackled sharp and fast in my right earpiece. "The red light is still on. Do not cut the feed. Keep pushing him. Get the answer."

I leveled the lens straight at Cole's chest. The red recording dot glowed bright in the dim room.

"I will ask you one last time," I said, ignoring the rattling doorknob. "What did Victor buy from you nine days after that broadcast?"

Cole raised his right hand. He rested his index finger over the edge of the plastic microphone. He did not cover the audio receiver. He just let his finger hover there, tracing the hard plastic rim.

The heavy wooden door swung open.

Victor marched into the room, his navy suit jacket flapping open, a scowl etched deep into his forehead.

Cole shifted his gaze from my camera to the general manager.

"You aren't looking for medical records," Cole said into the live microphone, his voice echoing perfectly through the transmission feed to the network truck. "You are looking for my contract extension."

Victor stopped dead in his tracks. The color drained completely from his face, leaving a pale, furious mask, before he lunged across the rubber floor and grabbed the thick power cord running from my camera to the wall.
