Chapter 1

"Ten minutes, Evelyn. That's what I have this week."

Sebastian said it the way other men say good morning. He was already scrolling through his phone, his coffee untouched on the marble counter.

"Last week you gave me eight," I said.

"Honey, you know how busy I am."

I knew. Everyone in America knew. Sebastian Vale, two-time Oscar winner, the face on half the billboards on Sunset Boulevard.

What nobody knew was that he had a wife.

Eight years ago in Boston, he was a nobody actor with a ruined right hand. A car crash had torn the nerves in his wrist. Some nights the pain was so bad he couldn't hold a glass of water.

"Don't go to Vienna," he'd begged me, the night before my flight to Europe. "Evie, please. If you leave, I'll quit."

So I tore up my scholarship letter.

At three in the morning I'd press hot towels to his wrist while he shook. When the towels didn't work, I played piano. I wrote him a song. I called it "The One I Love."

"Nobody's ever done this for me," he whispered once, his cheek on my shoulder. "I'll never let you down. I swear it."

Now his trophies covered an entire wall of our Beverly Hills living room. My piano sat in a guest room at the far end of the hall, under a dust sheet.

And my wedding ring lived in a drawer.

"Just until I'm settled," he'd promised. "Then we go public."

That was eight years ago too.

---

On Saturday, a music magazine called me last minute. A journalist wanted to interview me about my early compositions at a concert hall downtown.

I almost said no. Then I thought, why not? Sebastian wouldn't notice I was gone.

The hall manager waved me toward the backstage door. "The stage is booked, but you can wait in the green room."

I pushed the door open.

And froze.

Someone was playing piano. Soft, slow notes I would know in my sleep.

"The One I Love."

I stepped closer to the wings. The hall was empty except for two people.

Sebastian sat at the grand piano in a black shirt, sleeves rolled up. His right knuckles were bright red from playing.

In the front row, curled up in a velvet seat, was Chloe Marsh. His co-star from his last film. She had his suit jacket draped over her shoulders like a blanket. Her eyes were closed, and she was smiling.

The song ended. Chloe stretched like a cat.

"One more time, Sebastian. I don't sleep without it."

He flexed his fingers. Winced. Then smiled at her.

"As many times as you need."

He started again from the first note.

My hand gripped the edge of the curtain.

Last week, I'd sprained my wrist moving boxes. I couldn't open my pain pills. I'd walked into his office holding the bottle out.

"Can you open this for me?"

He hadn't even looked up from his script. "Evelyn. My hands are insured for millions. They're not for little things like this."

I'd opened it with my teeth.

Now those same hands were bleeding red at the knuckles. For her.

A stagehand passed behind me, carrying a coil of cable. He nodded toward the stage and grinned.

"Crazy, right? He's been at it three hours straight. She says it's the only thing that works for her insomnia."

Three hours.

I got ten minutes a week.

My phone buzzed. A news alert. Chloe's Instagram story, posted forty minutes ago. A shaky video of Sebastian at this exact piano.

*My favorite man playing our song.* 🖤

Our song.

The comments scrolled faster than I could read.

*OMG are they dating??*

*The way he looks at her!!!*

*Sebastian x Chloe is REAL, I've been saying it for months.*

I waited for the tears.

None came. Instead, a small, dry laugh slipped out of me. The stagehand gave me a strange look.

"You okay, ma'am?"

"I'm fine," I said. "Tell the journalist I'm sorry. Something came up."

I didn't storm the stage. I didn't scream his name.

I just turned around and walked out.

---

At home, the kettle sat on the stove where I always left it. Every night for eight years, I had a cup of chamomile ready for Sebastian when he walked in.

Tonight I didn't touch it.

I opened my laptop. There was an email I'd ignored for two weeks. A conservatory in New York, offering me a position as a composer-in-residence.

*We would be honored to have you, Ms. Whitmore. Please let us know by the end of the month.*

I read it three times. Then I flagged it.

---

Sebastian came home after midnight. He smelled like a perfume that wasn't mine.

He dropped his keys in the bowl and opened the fridge. He didn't look at my face. He didn't see my eyes, still red at the rims.

"Hey," he said, pulling out a bottle of water. "About next week's ten minutes. We'll have to push it."

"Why?"

"Chloe's having a rough time. She's not sleeping. The studio wants her rested for the reshoots, so I'm helping out."

"Helping out," I repeated.

"Don't make that face. It's work."

I studied his right hand. The knuckles were still pink.

"Does your hand hurt?"

He glanced down, then shoved it into his pocket. "It's nothing."

Eight years ago, "nothing" meant I stayed up until sunrise holding ice to it.

Tonight I just nodded.

"You won't have to make time for me anymore," I said.

He paused, water halfway to his lips. Then he laughed. Easy. Charming. The laugh that had won him two Oscars.

He walked over and ruffled my hair, the way you'd pat a puppy that had chewed a shoe.

"Don't be dramatic, sweetheart."

I looked up at him. This was the man who had once held my hand in a cold Boston apartment and sworn he would never let me down.

I didn't argue. I didn't explain.

"Goodnight, Sebastian."

"Night." He was already heading for the stairs, thumb moving across his phone screen. I heard him chuckle softly at something on it.

I waited until his bedroom door clicked shut.

Then I opened my laptop again, and typed into the search bar:

*How to file for divorce in California.*

The first result loaded. I clicked it.

Halfway down the page, one line stopped me cold.

*If the marriage was never made public, you may need proof that it legally exists.*

My stomach dropped.

Because three years ago, Sebastian had asked to "keep our marriage certificate safe" in his lawyer's office.

And I had never seen it since.
