Chapter 1

"The first time my mother-in-law slapped me, my husband didn't even look up from his phone."

The sting was still fresh on my cheek when I looked at him. Three feet away. Eyes down. Thumb scrolling.

Claudia's rings had caught the corner of my jaw, cold metal against warm skin, and the sound of the impact was so sharp it seemed to echo in the dining room. But Aiden just sat there.

Daphne was watching from the other end of the table. She didn't say anything. She simply pressed her lips together and looked away, like she'd seen something mildly interesting and decided it wasn't worth her attention. Gideon reached across his plate and picked up his steak knife. The scrape of metal against ceramic was the only sound in the room.

No one said it was wrong. Because in this house, it wasn't.

"You should be grateful." Claudia's voice was composed. She smoothed the front of her blouse. "Aiden could have chosen anyone. Instead he chose you. A girl with no family, no connections, nothing to offer. And you stand in my house and speak to me like that?"

I hadn't spoken to her disrespectfully. I had simply told her, quietly, that I'd already cleaned the kitchen that morning.

That was apparently enough.

I just stood there with my hand loose at my side and my jaw aching and I looked at my husband, who was still looking at his phone.

I was not silent because I had nowhere to go.

I was silent because I still loved him. Because I had spent fourteen months in this house believing that the man I married, the one who used to bring me bad takeout coffee just because I’d mentioned once that I liked the smell, was still somewhere underneath all of this. Because giving up on my marriage felt like losing the last thing I’d chosen for myself.

So I stood there, and then I went back to the kitchen.

The Morris house ran on a rhythm I had learned without being taught.

I woke up before anyone else to make breakfast, coffee, eggs, Gideon’s toast exactly the way he liked it. Claudia preferred her tea steeped for three minutes. Daphne didn’t come down until everything was on the table and would send it back if the eggs were too firm.

Aiden ate standing, distracted and already somewhere else.

I ate after they were done.

In the evenings I cleared the table. Daphne would push back her chair and leave her plate behind. Last Thursday, she had walked into my room without knocking, taken a blouse from my wardrobe, and worn it to brunch. She came home with a grease stain near the collar.

She didn’t apologize. It didn’t occur to her to.

I worked from the small desk in the corner of our bedroom, doing virtual assistant work for a client in Singapore. Invoices, correspondence, scheduling. It paid reliably, but the family acted like working from home meant I did nothing.

Gideon once asked, without looking up from his newspaper, whether I’d mopped the hallway yet.

I had.

That morning.

By ten o'clock that evening, the house had gone quiet.

Gideon was in his study. Daphne had gone out, and Claudia had gone to bed early.

I carried a glass of water down the hall toward the bedroom.

The door was open a few inches. Just enough that the light from inside cut a thin line across the floor.

I heard Aiden's voice, low and careful, and I almost kept walking. I almost told myself it was a work call, a late client, one of the sales contacts he was always chasing.

Then I heard him laugh.

Soft. Private. The kind of laugh I recognized because he used to use it only when we were alone, when it was late and the house was quiet and we were still the people we'd promised to be.

I stopped.

My fingers went cold around the glass.

"I told you." His voice dropped lower, like he was moving away from the door. "She doesn't suspect anything. She's harmless."

I stood in the hallway, unable to move.

The word kept echoing in my head.

Harmless.

My cheek still ached from where his mother had hit me that morning. Aiden had watched it happen and said nothing. Now he was in our bedroom, telling someone I was harmless.

I took one careful step back. Then another.

I pressed my back against the wall and stared at the ceiling, breathing through my nose until the glass in my hand stopped shaking.

I didn’t know who was on the other end of that call.

But suddenly, I had a question of my own.

Who was he talking to?
